It is started with a basic (for me at least)premise: how the "South" of the world could be... Less shitty?

There are quite a few PODs actually, the two I wrote about so far are : the creation of Israel a decade earlier, the anti-German Romanian Prime Minister doesn't gent assassinated and so Nazi Germany invades Romania (which becomes a Reichkomissariat) consecutively it makes Stalin realize Hitler is both stupid and insane, a less successful Dunkirk for the Allies, the plane in which De Gaulle fled France gets shot down and a more successful Franco-Thai War... For the Thais of course, the USA priority is Japan instead of Germany, also Turkey joins the Axis thanks to a far right officers clique.

There is also a few more countries that are reborn from the ashes Phoenix-like.

Here is the link. @Prussian Militarism would you be interested in helping me?

I mean, why not? Yeah sure I'll help you

A map made as a commission for a client on DeviantArt.

Not much backstory other than the US wins the War of 1812, the cotton gin is never invented (no civil war) and Mexico is fully annexed in 1848. Cuba, the Caribbean and most of Central America are subsequently incorporated into the Grand Republic.

While I did have a lot of fun figuring out the composition of state and territory borders, I'm in no ways an expert on North American history so there's bound to be errors and inconsistencies here and there.

Why are the river borders not colored any differently from the other river segments?

Question of style, I suppose. It’s been my general approach to mapping for a very long time. The only place where I deviate from it is in Columbia/Alaska/Yukon in order to make the area more dynamic and readable.

Another one of those "X ways to divide Y" maps. (Not mine, just stumbled onto on pinterest while looking for the continental divide)

A lot of people south of the Frasier west of the mountains go to Mt. Baker in Washington State, crossing the border at Sumas or at least they did before COVID shut down the border.

Here's something I whipped up for Halloween.

The Samhain Killings is a term used to refer to a series of murders perpetrated throughout the Metro-Detroit area throughout October of 1997. The victims were all young, brown haired, Catholic women active in their church communities. Most notably, and what would give the killings their names was that somewhere on each of the victims was found a card with a symbol associated with Irish paganism. This combined with the time of year the murders occurred would earn the perpetrator the moniker of the Samhain Killer. In total ten victims were killed throughout the month, each one having been mutilated in a way reminiscent of animal sacrifice.

During this time, eight other murders would be committed in a manner similar to the Samhain killer, though there were some notable differences; not all of the victims were brunettes, two of them were men, and only one was a Catholic. Not only that, but compared to the ritualistic murders of the Samhain victims, these killings were performed with a 9mm handgun. The perpetrator of these copycat killings, 34 year old Joshua Campbell would initially claim to be the perpetrator of all the killings, but would later retract his claims, admitting to having hoped that his crimes would be lumped in with the other murders.

Another detail noted by law enforcement was that there had been four murders the previous month, each victim matching the description of the Samhain victims, but lacking the more ritualistic nature of the actual crimes, leading some to speculate that the Samhain Killer may have started his rampage earlier than initially thought.

An alternate election map for the US House of Representatives loosely based on TL-191 but with some changes. I used the districts from the OTL 1970's as the base map (original on Wikipedia) and didn't change them mostly because I lack the mapping skills for that. I tried to include the TL-191 state of Houston but decided to leave out Canada and the other Confederate states annexed after the Second Great War in favor of an alternate scenario: in this world, Featherston never becomes leader of the Freedom Party and so there is never another war between the USA and CSA. Relations between the USA and CSA by the present day are not great, but not terrible. In many ways the CSA has never recovered from the Great War, and without Featherston it just sort of stagnates in perpetual dysfunction.

Meanwhile, the USA is one of the world's leading superpowers. While its constitution is largely familiar from OTL, its changed history caused it to develop a real multiparty system. Especially given that most states still use FPTP voting, the multiparty system can produce some interesting results, including scenarios where no single party has enough members to elect the Speaker and must make deals with smaller parties for support. Recognizing the problems of races where a Congressperson can be elected with around 20% of the vote in a five or six way race, some US states have adopted ranked-choice or instant-runoff voting, but not all.

The Parties of the United States:
- Socialist Party: social democracy, a big-tent center-left party supported by organized labor. Its base is the big cities and industrial Midwest, but it also has support in the Great Plains and among union miners and other blue-collar workers out west.
- Democratic Party: pro-capitalist and generally more socially conservative. Comfortable with big-government style programs like national healthcare etc. especially when those can be argued to contribute to national security and military preparedness, but also more inclined to trust the market in economic areas not directly bearing on those. The party that rebuilt the USA after its humiliations in the War of Secession and 2nd Mexican War, the Democrats emphasize "peace through strength."
- Liberal-Republican Party: the remnant of the nineteenth century Republicans, they occupy a middle space between the dominant Socialists and Democrats. They favor economic liberalism but will work with the Socialists to rein in the Democrats' less restrained support of business. The Liberal-Republicans have a strongly regional character, being based mostly in New England, parts of the Upper Midwest, and Kansas, which has been Republican since the 1850's and whose attachment to this minor party defies all logic to anyone from anywhere other than Kansas.
- Left Alternative: democratic socialism and, increasingly, environmentalism. LA formed from a left-wing split from the Socialists led by radical students and activists who felt the party had become too moderate. It wins mostly in big-city districts that are normally safely Socialist, usually when voters want to protest against complacent incumbents who have become unresponsive cogs in the Socialist Party's big-city machines. It does best on the West Coast.
- People's Party: best described as conservatives who don't want to be Democrats for historical reasons. It was founded by a collection of right-leaning groups from places like Utah, Sequoyah, Houston, and Kentucky, states that had been forcibly incorporated or re-incorporated in the USA as a result of the Great War. Its membership initially wanted to take its states out of the USA, but since that is not a realistic goal, they try to work within the system for the good of their states, which to them means keeping federal interference to a minimum. The only party in this USA that has any use for the concept of "state's rights." The People's Party has never won any elections outside of Utah, Houston, Sequoyah, or Kentucky, and rarely contests elections in any other states.
- Independence Party: an extreme-right, abstentionist group of unreconstructed pro-CSA secessionists. Originally set up as the "Freedom Party in the Occupied Territories" when a new war between the USA and CSA seemed possible in the 1930's and '40's, its members pursued an anti-system strategy of causing constant disruption in Congress until it became the practice to deny to seat them upon their election. Its history has been closely tied to that of the Freedom Party in the CSA; when that party failed to stop racial violence or fix the Great Depression in the CSA and lost power, the Independence Party deteriorated along with it. It once typically won all the House seats in Kentucky and Houston, but now votes for it are best understood as protest votes cast against federal neglect by residents of some of the country's poorest districts.

The map: (sorry the urban districts are hard to see, I'd love a basemap with insets of the big cities if anyone can point me to one):

Continuing on the map of the "Christian World" I am taking a look at the MENA countries. I shall begin in the east. The former republics of the USSR are annexed to the Russian Federation. In Kazakhstan, most are admitted as either oblasts or Krais (when combined with previous oblast subdivisions) to account for federal subjects with at least some 750 000 inhabitants. Much of the Caspian coast is now watering the enlarged Astrakhan Krai, and northern Kyrgyzstan is admitted as well. Out of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and southern Kyrgyzstan a "Turkestan Republic" is established, though even here the majority are ethnic Russians, Ukrainians etc.

Afghanistan is a rather non-existent country, running mostly on paper. The population is no more than 10 000 people, and actual control is held by the US army rather than the local administration, which exists only in cities - or shall we call them villages? - of Kabul, Herat, Kandahar and Balkh.

Iran did fare a little better, though apparently only the northwestern half of the country appears to have been able to gain any real governance. The Provisional Constitution of the Republic of Persia states that its official languages be Persian, Armenian and Syriac. Georgian as a language is namely in the Isfahan province, where it is co-official. Little to no effective control exists in the southeastern half of the country, and the country is able to perpetuate its existance due to support from both Armenia and Assyria.

Azerbaijan as a country ultimately collapses, and is divided up among its neoighbours: the Shirvan Republic of Russia, while Armenia took roughly a hlaf and parts were ceded to Georgia as well. Georgia as a country appears to have been a major winner in the area: due to Russia dealing with its own problems, and demographic losses of the breakaway Abkhazia, it was able to first integrate this rebellious province, before the southern Ossetians diplomatically agreed to join the country. Goergia has also gained some areas from the collapsed Turkey.

Armenia was able to greatly expand its domains, over former Azerbaijani and Turkish territories, hoping to repopulate these areas by returning Armenian diaspora from across the world and now Georgian Abkhazia. Apparently however, the first couple of decades are going to be difficult for the country, as the repopulation of its newest acquisitions is going to be a lengthy process.

Turkey as a country collapsed, as its own Christian population was too small to justify its perpetuated existence in this world, and those who did welcomed the irredentist claims of its neighbours. While Armenia and Greece got the lion´s share, Georgia also helped itslef to former Tao-Klarjeti, while Bulgaria got a small portion of Eastern Thrace as well. In the south Syria and Assyria pushed their borders northwards - the former claiming Cilicia and Antioch, while the latter received Turabdin and Hakkari.
Greece itself is facing a tremendous administrative challenge in getting to integrate Anatolia. Property found in the newly acquired lands was sold and helped Greece somehow to for the first year after so long give it a surplus budget. Descendants of refugees from Asia Minor are encouraged to settle inthe newly acquired regions: a slightly less that one million people have already settled in the Pontus, and Pontic Greek is declared to be the official language alongside English (for practical issues), and another roughly one million have settled in Smyrna and its hinterlands, and a 1.5 million in Constantiniople agglomeration. Cappadocia , Pamphylia and Galatia however have less 500 000 people. In Cappadocia, the Karamanli Turkish language is brought in and continues to be used s part of the national heritage; elsewhere, ancient Greek toponyms were restored.

In the Gulf countries, with the monarchical regimes collapsing, it was mainly the Filipino workers, who became the new dominant people of the area. Out Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oan, the emirates and Saudi Arabia, a the Federal Republic of Qatar was declared, with Tagalog and English the official languages. The political landscape is dominated largely by populist leaders, who are courted by countries across the globe due to access to oil.

The Republic of Assyria, with its capital at Niniveh (Mosul), is a country whose population is made chiefly of the returning diaspora. An agreement with the neighbouring Republic of Syria was signed, whereby Syria ceded the mostly Assyrian populated Hasakeh province. Syria itslef expanded to include Cilicia and Antioch, as well as Jordan. Arabic continues to be the official language, almost everywhere except the newly established Maaloula province, where Western Aramaic is to be further promoted. Another large minority are the Armenians. The dominant political force ruling Syria is now the Syrian Social Nationalist Party, supported primarily by Orthodox Christians.

The political system of Lebanon appears to have shaked a little, and Lebanese politicians are facing another question: should Lebanon joinj syria or not? The Maronites value their independence dearly, though the other Christian denominations have yet to make up their mind.

Without Jews, Muslims and Druze, the Christians of both Israel and Palestine are quick to make common cause and put an end to further separation. A united Republic of Jerusalem is declared in the new capital, and the country makes its money from pilgrim tourism, but also by carrying on the Israeli hi-tech industry. The population triples with the return of the diaspora. As it is, the newly established country faces a threat to its independence from Syria, seeking to annex the country as it had done with Jordan.

The largest indigenous population of North Africa in this scenario are the Copts, who appear to become a regional power. Having annexed both Sudan and Cyrenaica upon agreement with Italy, Egypt is one of the regional powers. With a much smaller population, Egypt is in a better position regarding its food supply. In former Maghreb the situation has become a little more messy. In many areas, isolated communities of a few hundred or a few thousand people were found in what were previously large cities. In Algeria, it were the remnants of the Pied-Noirs, along with their diaspora in France who pressed for a return of French administration into the area. France, hit considerably itslef, nevertheless began an official governmnet program to colinze the now largely depopulated Algeria.

Lybia itself was divided into three: Cyrenaica to Egypt, Tripolitania under joint Italian-Maltese administration and Fezzan under Italian administration. However, it turns out that the Italian administration of Lybia is rather non-existant aside from a few offices and a miliatry barracks. Tripolitania is experiencing a steady migration from Malta, and Maltese migrants now constitute 75% of the population of Tripolitania. Tunisia has come under Italian administration, and becmae the target of the wave of settler migration, though some Italians also returned to Libya due to family ties.

Finally, Morroccco was to receive a Spanish administration. In practice, real Spanish presence was confined to former Spanish Morrocco in the north on the Mediterranean coast. The area received migrants chiefly from Latin America , and within five years, some 350 000 people settled the area. The area is administered from the city of Ceuta as an autonomous community of Riffian Mauretania. The rest of Morrocco , administered from Rabat and Casablanca (the only cities with a real Spanish presence) is ruled rather like a colony, with the Spanish taking care of supplying the cities with goods. The population of Morrocco is diverse, with people of European Mediterranean descent making rouzghly a quarter of the population, another quarter being the expats from all over the world (including Subsaharan Africans), while the remaining half was of local Morroccan Christians. As for Western Sahara, it is administered from the Canary islands, and the only settlement, Laayoune is nothing more than a village with some 750 people, of whom two thirds are there due to administrative, military or other duties, and merely 250 are permanent residents. To put it more frankly, Laayoune is similar in nature to scientific bases in places like Antarctica
Looking good!

I have a few thoughts again about the partitions of certain regions.

Unlike a traditional ISOT to virgin earth situation all the infrastructure is still there, so the option for super fast recolonization is on the table.

On the other hand, unless people act REALLY fast, there are going to be worse than Chernobyl level nuclear meltdowns at many reactors when suddenly their non-christian operators disappear. Along with a slew of other man made disasters from other unmaintained infrastructure like dams.

Lots of immigrants from Latin America returning to the old world makes sense, it's got to be one of the least depopulated regions.

Greece is taking over a huge amount of territory. There are just as many Georgians as Greeks and I think they would move into the Pontus region. Bulgaria I think could also take the northern half of the Edrine province in Thrace, with the ghost city of Adrianople.

The amount of land you show Poland taking from Belarus (I know, I know, it was my suggestion in the first place) seems unreasonably large. I suggest around 1/3 of that. Although if there was a war fought over it as opposed to peaceful negotiations then anything goes I guess.

I think there are more Lebanese christians than Syrian christians, so it would be more an equal merger of the two than one joining the other.

I had completely forgotten about groups like the Assyrian christians and the many foreign workers in the gulf states.

Why would the US army bother staying in an empty Afghanistan? I suppose pulling out would in effect cede the region to the Russians, but it's landlocked and difficult to access (unless something is going on in Pakistan). The military deployment at the time of the event probably outnumbered the remaining christian afghanis.

Sudan proper would probably be empty and might be claimed in part by the south sudanese, along with the Copts.

Yemen could end up direct American territory, for a base in Aden. It's going to be completely depopulated.

Russia is very well positioned geographically for a lot of expansion south into Asia, problem is how hard they must have been depopulated themselves, especially in the east.

Another one of my pre-work doodles: the United Kingdom of Greater Anglia and Northern Frisia or, what if the Anglo-Saxons did not migrate and decided to murder more than a few butterflies instead?
