Philip's pan-Hellenic empire

3ZFFZFu.jpg

Very beautiful!

The content on here is always improving. Someone could organize the amazing map making community here to produce a very high quality book of maps of real history.

I remember when the maps of OTL posted here had solid blocks of color showing the territory controlled by different empires in the colonial period, and places not claimed (edit) were shown in the same color as places that were not populated. Today they typically have different shades depicting the different levels of claims and control, and unrecognized non-European polities (the Iroquois, the Commanche, Tipu Tip's African empire for example) are now routinely being shown on the map as well. So it's not just improvement in the aesthetics, it's been possible to witness the improvement in recognition of non-European history over the course of my time here. I'm sure others have noticed the same thing, and I'm sure I've said something like this before. Great stuff.

Austria Hungary might have won the Great War... but to think that would stop its demise would have been just foolish...

The Danube War was not unpredictable, with many statesmen having declared being surprised it happened "so late". It was clear that the Ausgleich was not a stable solution, and it would only be a matter of time before Vienna would have to choose between Budapest and Zagreb. And when war came, it chose Zagreb. The short but destructive war between 1924 and 1925 drastically redrew the map of Central Europe. Gone was the Austro-Hungarian Empire, in its stead the new nations of Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Austria-Croatia have been born. If this new order will be more stable than the previous one, only time and hindsight will tell.

Yes! Another Discordiale map! If you don't know what Discordiale is, I've already posted a map set in the timeline here (Anglo-Turkish War), but the TL;DR is the Anglo-French alliance never forms and Germany wins WW1.
The scenario here is that Hungary revolts from Austria upon the proposal of Trialism (elevating Croatia into an equal partner). Safe to say, things don't go too well for Hungary, who ends up losing way more land than what they would have if they had just approved of Trialism.

If you want to read, here's a very very simple timeline of the events that happened during the war:
July – 1925:
  • The Imperial Council decides to debate the proposal of Trialism after years of pressure from the Croatian lands in the Empire. A Political Crisis ensues in which the Diet of Hungary is taken over by nationalist deputies and after a few days the unilaterally declare the independence of Hungary “to properly preserve the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Hungary”, the 27th of July, 1925. Austria elevates Croatia into a same-level Kingdom and invades Hungary.
August – 1925:
  • Czechoslovak exiles, who had organized before during the Great War, start planning to lobby for either independence or at least autonomy, in the same level of Croatia. Local autonomists and independentists organize the Czech National Council in Prague; sending delegations to Vienna to have Emperor Karl recognize them as a legal entity representing the Lands of the Bohemian Crown, while ignoring the Bohemian and Moravian Diets. Institutional Crisis ensues in Bohemia-Moravia as the Czech National Council and State Diets try to outlaw each other.
  • Serbia declares full independence from Austrian occupation, as Austrian troops retreat to deal with the Hungarian rebellion.
September – 1925:
  • Romania mobilizes its army, seeing the current situation as an opportunity. At the same time, they start secret negotiations with Austria and Germany to intervene in Austria’s side in exchange for concessions in Transylvania.
  • The main Austrian offensive is stalled by the newly mobilized Hungarian National Army before they could even reach Lake Balaton. The hopes of the Austrian Army to make this a quick war are rapidly vanishing.
October – 1925:
  • Nationalist agitation starts causing disturbances in Galicia-Lodomeria.
November – 1925:
  • Although negotiations were not conclusive, Romania declares war on Hungary and Romanian soldiers cross the Carpathians. In the few cities they capture, the Romanian populations welcome the advancing soldiers as liberators.
December – 1925:
  • Under German secret authorization, Poland and Ukraine occupy the lands of Galicia-Lodomeria “to preserve peace and order”.
  • Under nationalist pressure, the Bohemian and Moravian are dissolved. The CNC sends an ultimatum to Vienna to recognize Czech autonomy. Vienna rejects this, and the council declares independence just a day later, the 19th of December, 1925.
January – 1925:
  • Serbia occupies Montenegro and annexes the country.
  • Romanian troops march into Banat.
  • With the Austro-Czech front mostly static, Czech forces advance into Hungary, seeking to liberate Slovakia. Austria meanwhile asks Germany for help, but the German High Command remains indecisive, unwilling to spill blood and considering the opportunities a fragmented Austria-Hungary would bring them.
February – 1925:
  • Serbian troops march across the undefended lands in Eastern Bosnia and Syrmia, but also into Bačka and Western Banat, in Hungary. Austro-Croat troops scramble to defend the border. Despite this, the Austrian army manages a breakthrough, in parallel to the Czech takeover of most of western Slovakia.
  • The Kingdom of Italy sends troops into Trento and Trieste, under the same justification as the occupation of Galicia-Lodomeria. German influence in Austria manages to diffuse conflict in the region, but both nations remain distrustful of each other.
March – 1925:
  • The eastern Hungarian front starts collapsing, as Romanian troops overwhelm the Hungarians and march up to the Tisza. In the west, the border with Croatia gives in, while some support German regiments reluctantly sent help the Austrians advance. By the end of the month, an armistice is requested by the Hungarian leadership. While the original goal of the Austrians was to restore the empire, it has become clear that this objective is now impossible. As such, the ceasefire is accepted.
April – 1925:
  • Serbia and the Czech National Council too sign ceasefires with both Austria/Croatia and Hungary.
  • The Treaty of Pressburg is signed between the new Czechoslovak Republic, Austria and Hungary:
    • The Archduchy of Austria and the Kingdom of Hungary recognize the independence of the Czechoslovak Republic.
    • Austria will cede the Lands of the Bohemian Crown to the Czechoslovak Republic.
    • Hungary will cede Slovakia (borders to be determined by a joint Austrian and Czech commission, under German surveillance) to the Czechoslovak Republic.
  • The Treaty of Graz is signed between Austria, Croatia and Hungary:
    • The Archduchy of Austria recognizes the independence of the Kingdom of Hungary.
    • Archduke Karl abdicates the throne of Hungary for himself and his descendants.
    • The Kingdom of Hungary cedes the region of Burgenland (including Sopron) to the Archduchy of Austria, as well as the region known as the “Vendic March” in Vas and Zala counties.
    • Hungary recognizes the secession of the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia south of the Mura and Drava rivers, and its union with Austria.
  • The First Vienna Concessions are signed between Austria, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Ukraine:
    • The Archduchy of Austria recognizes the Polish annexation of Western Galicia and the Ukrainian annexation of Eastern Galicia, the border between them to be defined by a German mediation.
  • The Second Vienna Concessions are signed between Austria, Croatia, Germany and Italy:
    • The Archduchy of Austria recognizes the Italian annexation of Trento and Trieste, as well as the award of a strip of Istria from Parenzo to Pula.
    • The Kingdom of Italy guarantees the free and unrestricted passage through the Adriatic Sea for the Archduchy of Austria.
  • The Treaty of Sankt Pölten is signed between Austria, Croatia, Hungary and Serbia:
    • The Archduchy of Austria and the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia recognize the Serbian annexation of Sarajevo District (except for Fojnica) and Tuzla District (except for Orašje).
    • The Archduchy of Austria and the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia recognize the Serbian annexation of the Kingdom of Montenegro.
    • The Archduchy of Austria and the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia recognize the Serbian annexation of Eastern Syrmia.
    • The Kingdom of Hungary and the Kingdom of Serbia recognize the Croatian annexation of the rest of the Condominium of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
    • The Kingdom of Hungary cedes Bačka south of the Danube-Tisa-Danube Canal to the Kingdom of Serbia.
    • The Kingdom of Hungary cedes Southwestern Banat up to Zrenjanin to the Kingdom of Serbia.
  • The Treaty of Subotica is signed between Hungary, Austria and Romania:
    • The Kingdom of Romania annexes Transylvania and Eastern Banat from the Kingdom of Hungary, including Timișoara, but not Oradea or the Maramureș region, which remain in Hungary.
    • The Kingdom of Romania annexes Bukovina.
    • The Kingdom of Hungary will demilitarize the Crișana region.
  • The Zagreb Accords are signed between Austria and Croatia:
    • The Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia is elevated into the self-governing Kingdom of Croatia within the Habsburg realms.
    • Dalmatia and the Istrian Peninsula are awarded to the Kingdom of Croatia.
    • The lands of Carniola, Trieste and Southern Styria will be granted autonomous status within the lands of the Archduchy of Austria.

I love your Anglo-Turkish War, and this world your building of a quick Great War against France and Russia, and now we're dealing with the fallout from it.

Alas, poor A-H. I would have thought a quick war would have saved Austria Hungary and it last to at least say the 1970s, but when things go wrong, they go worst. Same for the end of the Ottoman Empire.

Still, this TTL Balkans is pretty interesting to see, same for the development of both new and old states going forward.

Hungary OTL was very uncooperative when it came to negotiating greater autonomy for those who were not Germans nor Magyars, but only greater autonomy could have had the chance to save the Empire. It was an almost impossible scenario for Austria to overcome.
About the Southern Balkans, I do have some ideas for the Third Balkan War, but I'm not set on a definitive chain of events yet.

Plot twist: just under our Earth, there's a mirror Earth with land and sea swapped, as if the crust were a crumpled bit of paper habitable on both sides.

There is a fan theory that the planet of Nirn from The Elder Scrolls series is shaped like an infinitely long mobius strip, and that the continent of Lyg is a mirror image of Nirn on the inverse side of the strip.

Following the Empire of All Man and Emperor Alexandros's death, the warlord era that followed shook Mankind to her core. While the unification of all Mankind would always be out of reach, the three sons of Alexandros would make of Mankind in thier own image.

Fillipea- eldest of the sons and greatest of Alexandros turned out to be nothing without his father- his greatness was only held up by his fathers petards. Without Alexandros by his side, Fillipea retreated into isolation and sorrow. The valley of the Ressea changing from the grand and shining heart of an empire- to a timid and meek kingdom who is always on the defensive- Alexandros was always proud of his eldest son in his life. But now it seems after death all Fillipea can do is disappoint his father. Despite his failures, he has molded his subjects and followers into proud and sturdy people. Able to resist the forces around them, while Fillipea may be considered a failure compared to his father, his people- and the people that'll follow will consider him a proud pillar of justice and defiance. The Empire of all Man is gone, but in its place will be the defiant and long-lasting "Empire of Ressea".

To the west is the Constantinian Dynasty Rising out of the center of the Nihilian River has now conquered and tamed the vast rivers that feed the western holdings of Efetria. With Constanius's leadership, the Dynasty has made great strides in building up and making the once desolate desert lands lush with greenery. Palm trees sit on every street, the pyramids and memorials built to honor Alexandros and Constanius stretch high into the sky ready to defy the gods. It is thanks to Constanius and his son that Aegyptia has managed to industrialize and and rise above what she was at the start of Alexandros's campaigns- a messy tribal quagmire that painted the river red and gave the land the moniker of "Red Sands". It is thanks to Constantinus and his work that has turned the Nihilian from a bloodbath into an essential artery of civilization.

And to the east- the once disjointed Army of Alexei reformed and become known simply as "The Martial State" though officially called the "Dominion of Alexus", most of everyone else outside Alexei's grasp calls it the Martial State. Known for its ruthlessness and greater bouts of xenophobia than the rest of Human civilization- going so far as to not even recruit Souhal engineers for more dangerous tasks, or Ent "natural guides", the Martial State while it appears cruel and horrible is one of the greatest places to raise a family- the vast military service of the State keeps bandits, thugs, and criminal operations to a low. Through the military everyone is given a job and appreciated- be they a commander, a soldier, chef, or logistics specialist. All creeds of Man are welcomed under the Martial banner.

Humanity has grown significantly since the end of the warlord era. Spreading north, west, south, and east. The tactics of Alexandros were legendary and innovative, inspiring countless generals and men to fight on. But now new powers are emerging at th
e fringes of Human territory. To the south are the Assoumites with thier empire of gold, slaves, and spices. And to the north is a new and almost alien state- the Tiberian League, a collection of small tribes and city states led by the head nation- the Tiberian Republic.

The future is now uncertain and unknown. While Alexandros would be horrified at what has become of his empire and his sons, they've made great strides in taking after his teachings and spreading them far and wide. They all strive for perfection and that means they shall attain glory in thier pursuit.

Huh, is the rest of the world populated by other hominids and/or assorted fantasy races?

Huh, is the rest of the world populated by other hominids and/or assorted fantasy races?
There are the "Veil" races.
The Eavali- bamboo-munching hippies who specialize in the "natural" order- a.k.a. plant-based magic and other greenery magic. They're usually smug about most things since they were the first race and were "divinely chosen".
The Souhal- mountain men who live and breath dirt. Many of them have never seen the sun. Thanks to this they've gained the ability to master the earth and her elements for thier own purposes.
Norveili- brutal savages of the icy north and the tundra, sometimes called the "Frostwalkers" thanks to thier magical tendencies and brute force. Their civilization is limited in scale- but the cities they do have are incredible feats of engineering and intimidation.
There were supposed to be the Wesvaili to complete the quadrinity. Strangely enough they died out a long time ago.

There are other smaller races and species. The intelligent big cat clans just south of Assoum, the Ents of northern Romia, or the lemur peoples that inhabit the islands off the southern shore of Indus.

The Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empires collapsed earlier, so the war that began in 1915 was not so worldwide. Moldova and Greece, led by pro-German kings, sided with Großdeutschland. The Central Powers were opposed by the Great Entente, consisting of Russia, France and Italy, and the Little Entente, consisting of the kingdoms of Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and Wallachia.

Okay, it was a bit of an experiment. I just saw a picture of Ravachol being arrested and my pareidolia said to me: "Hey, this kind of looks similar to classical satirical war maps." So I tried to make it look even more similar.

Until I read that, I thought it was a collage of pictures put together. My brain is taking time to adapt.
