Map Thread XX

So for a couple of previous Map Threads, I had done a "Most Popular list" and in honor of reaching Map Thread XX, I thought it would be nice to restart that tradition. And wow, AH.com. You've outdone yourselves. In Map Thread XIX, users had posted over 500 original finished maps that managed to get 40+ likes. Can't imagine what we might see for this new thread.
And a few notes - The following only includes finished maps actually posted by the creator. The number of likes per map (recorded after the user's name) is the total number before the new thread was posted. Maps that have the same number of likes are ranked by whichever one was posted first and so on. Titles were generally based on whatever was given on the map or the post's title, but it admittedly wasn't a perfect process. I've also tried to note when a map was a part of an established TL or a special series (i.e. Telephone Map Games), but of course, the name used for any map can be changed if the creator wants. Also, a map with (Series) in the name simply denotes that the post has multiple maps. Apologies in advance for any errors!
And lastly, special thanks to @XFE and @Minnesota_Nationalist for helping me compile this list. You two were a massive help! And without further ado -

PoD: The League of the Public Weal proceeds with stronger collaboration among the various French nobles against Louis XI and the Battle of Montlhéry ends in a crushing defeat for Louis.
Louis' army retreats to Étampes where Louis is again defeated and ends up captured. Louis is then taken to Orléans where he is forced to sign a treaty that states that (1) his younger brother Charles is granted Normandy as another apanage, (2) some concessions along the Somme are to be granted to Charles Count of Charolais, (3) the Duchy of Brittany is to be separated from France (and never ends up part of France), and (4) certain feudal prerogatives are to be returned to various feudal lords. The central authority that Louis wanted for France was broken by the treaty.
Louis in 1469 launches a futile invasion of Normandy in an attempt to regain it but is promptly defeated by the combined forces of Charles the Bold and Charles, Duke of Berry and Normandy (Louis' younger brother). In the Treaty of Rouen which ends this conflict, Charles the Bold forces Louis to acknowledge the complete separation of the Burgundian possessions from the Kingdom of France. Charles the Bold also negotiates with Emperor Friedrich III which raises Burgundy to a kingdom and joins the realm to the Empire. Also, Charles, Duke of Berry ends up having a son before his death which continues the House of Berry.
The House of Anjou is never (at least not yet) acquired by the French king as René Duke of Anjou and Charles Count of Maine have surviving heirs.

A Tale of Four Frances
The Francophone World
For decades, the French Empire has continued to prosper. In 1961, the French Community, better known as the Francophonie, was formed to contest the supremacy of the British Commonwealth, with France in the helm. The next decades would see the French ruthlessly stamp out anti-French rebellions throughout the Francophonie, most notably the First Algerian War and the Indochina Wars, which saw many French soldiers die in foreign soil. Whereas the Commonwealth would federalize culminating in the creation of the Imperial Parliament, the Francophonie would not go beyond a France-centered economic pact. It certainly did not help that the other members’ economies were ravaged in previous colonial wars.
The Second Soviet War would pass by quickly, with French armies and foreign legions serving in the European Front. After that, the French elected an isolationist government under former Fascist Party member Auguste Souchon. As globalism spread throughout the world, the Gaullist ideology was formed, with nativist, pro-French policies at the forefront. France would continue at this trend, increasing tariffs and prioritizing trade with the rest of the Francophonie. The 2003 East European Crisis would see world economies crash along the same lines as the Great Depression. France would be heavily hit as well, with recovery taking several years. Amongst all of this, trouble was brewing in the south.
Embers of Revolt
Algeria remained a sore point in French politics. The First Algerian War concluded with a nominal French victory. The Pied-Noir dominated north would become a region of France, with the southern Tuareg areas becoming an overseas territory. This did not do anything fix the situation, and the rebels simply retreated to Italian Libya and Spanish-occupied Morocco. Despite setbacks such as the collapse of their Axis benefactors, the Algerian National Front never wavered. They became active again in 2006, conducting terror attacks first at Algerian cities before making their way to the French Riviera. The 2015 Cote d’Azur Attacks saw 19 die and hundreds wounded. President Francois Asselineau would enact surveillance laws to protect the nation from future attacks. The French military was deployed throughout the Sahara, intervening in civil wars in Fezzan and Chad to stamp out the rebellion. This would only embolden opposition, and in March 2018, the Nationalists would intensify operations, declaring unilateral independence, beginning the Second Algerian War. Protests began in major French cities. The French economy crashed for the second time in a century as the protests turned bloody. The final blow would be the declaration of martial law and the postponement of the 2018 French presidential election. Socialist Party candidate Berenice Ardouin, who was leading the polls at the time, would protest by being absent in subsequent parliamentary sessions.
By May, the protesters barricaded themselves in the suburbs. The people had enough, and despite the lack of an election, Ardouin declared herself President of France from her hometown of Toulouse. With that, the Second French Revolution began.

In the next few months, the south of France would declare for Ardouin’s Toulouse government. Asselineau would die in office on May, succeeded by Senate president Alain Deslys. Seen as a sign of weakness, Brittany and Normandy seceded from the republic, with support from the Commonwealth. Deslys attempted to make peace with the Socialist south, much to the ire of his National Front allies under Aymeric Bossuet. The paramilitary wing of the Front, known as the National Vanguard, would start acting independent of Deslys government forces, until Bossuet himself declared independence from the Deslys government.
With three separate governments declaring legitimacy, the INASS (International Alliance of Sovereign States) took notice. They deployed troops on Calais, Marseille, and Aix-en-la-Chapelle and turned them to international cities under their protection. Paris would fall to INASS as international volunteers dropped in and seized government buildings. Deslys and his government retreated to Orleans by this time as Bossuet had the north, with his base in Amiens. The overseas territories of France would declare neutrality in the conflict, as Minister of Overseas France Romuald Coquelin would continue to administer the territories from Algiers. That is, until he got kicked out by Algerian rebels, after which he moved to his current base of operations at Cayenne.
As the Toulouse government and Amiens government continued to make ground, more French lands were lost. Savoy and Arpitania seceded at the same time on July, under threat of Toulousaine invasion. They immediately were accepted as members of the Zollverein to cement their international recognition. Provence would secede in October, as would Corsica, who would reinstall the Bonapartes. A branch of the Orleans government based in Poitiers would declare independence under rogue general Guy Thiers. The Rhenish territories would declare independence, before being subsumed by the Rhenish republic as well. Dunkirk would be taken by the Dutch and Lille by the Walloons. Finally, the region of Lorraine, cut off from the Orleanais by the Amienois, would declare independence under Jean, Count of Paris, who reinstated the Orleanist monarchy from his seat in Metz.
The final nail to the coffin would be Coquelin’s declaration of independence from the mainland, with the creation of the Federation of the French Overseas Territories
Second Magdeburg Concord
After the initial fights fizzled out in late 2020, with the world economy stabilizing once more, there was an unofficial truce, especially once the 2021 Flu Epidemic began in earnest. In 2021, the Ceasefire of Brussels was signed by the four claimants to the French government, temporarily stopping fighting across the frontlines. For the first time in three years, Europe was at peace again. The ceasefire would be made permanent by the Second Magdeburg Concord, on 14 June 2025, where all European nations promised to co-operate in future endeavors. Within the concord, the four governments finally had to recognize the independence of all the new nations that came from the conflict, including each other. They also had to renounce the claim of succession and legitimacy from Asselineau’s government and the Third French Republic. With it, the new governments had to rebrand themselves.
One funny thing to come out of the entire ordeal was that all four Frances were kicked out by the Francophonie, rebasing the organization in Strasbourg. To date, the four Frances all have tried to rejoin the organization, but their applications have not been processed yet. The permanent French seat in the INASS Security Council would be temporarily given to the Rhenish Republic to avoid further contention

A neo-Fascist state, the country is currently led by Joselin Soyer, after Bossuet got ousted by Fascists on 2024 for being too moderate. Extremely Gaullist and isolationist, the nation has barely any friends except the three other Frances and the fellow neo-Fascist Roman Republic. Out of the four, they are doing the worst, although they are doing what they can with the limited international aid they received. Their military is still heavily maintained, ready to take back lost land.
Fourth French Republic (Orleans)
The only country to retain the republican framework of the Third Republic, the Orleans government continues to receive aid from the Commonwealth and APEC. Electing liberal mayor of Orleans Jean-Luc Delannoy into the presidency, the country is currently heading towards recovery, with an agrarian-centered economy on the forefront
United Syndicates of France (Toulouse)
The legislative branch of the Toulouse government was quickly overwhelmed by Syndicalists during the first elections in 2020. Immediately the Syndicalist party would be torn between Democrats, who wanted to keep the current constitution, and the Radicals, who wanted to change it entirely. In the end a democratic Syndicalist-Socialist coalition under protest leader Antoine Sartre would be elected president. A constitutional convention was quickly created to placate the radicals, and in the end, no one was happy. Syndicates would be created in lieu of provinces, with each electing representatives to a unicameral legislature, with a premier as head of state and government. Parties outside the Syndicalist Party were still allowed to exist.
Sartre would resign and new elections were held, with the radicals under Cyrille Rouanet winning the elections. Today, the nation enjoys support from other ideological allies like the United Italian Communes and the Federation of the Volga Soviets.
Federation of the French Overseas Territories (Cayenne)
Divided into three sectors (Atlantic, Indian Ocean, and Pacific), the federation is still led by Romuald Coquelin. Turning into a liberal tax haven, the country is seen as a vacation paradise for its numerous islands in the Caribbean and the Pacific. Currently receiving funding for its operations by the USA and Canada.

So what happened to Indochina in the mist of France collapse? Or even Algeria?

What of this 'Second Soviet War'?
Indochina has already secured its independence in the Indochina War, with the exception of Cochinchina, which would be occupied by French troops before pulling out in the midst of the Revolution.
The Tuaregs would occupy the entirety of the southern territory and have their independence recognized by the international community.
As for Algeria, once most troops were committed to fight in the mainland, the regional government would declare neutrality in the mainland conflict and instead focus on the trouble in the south. By 2020/21 the conflict spread to the cities, and in a bid to restore peace, the regional government kicked out Coquelin and declared independence from France.
Germany would indeed be dismantled (reddit post here). Basically an earlier war in Europe, coupled with bloodier battles in the western front convinced the general populace that "Versailles didn't go far enough". This attitude would be heavily reflected in the peace treaty. The Rhenish would be constantly occupied by the French (due to rebel activity) and as a result would have a large population of bilingual French/German speakers.
Without saying too much, the Second Soviet War would see the Soviets try (and fail) to take back lost land from the first. It did not end well, with a resulting civil war breaking the nation apart, leading to a series of conflicts that would end at 2002 (Ukrainian War).

The year is 2000, and the duality of the East and West still stands. Despite the tumultuous calamity faced by Moscow during the Lost Decade and the scandalous diatribes faced by the United States government during the Iran-Contra Affair, the tenacity of the Cold War still looms across the entire globe as the two Great Power clashes with each other to achieve the title of the world’s sole hegemon.
In the East, the Soviet Union is licking its wounds from the dramatic turmoil that is the Lost Decade. Once threatened by the changing tides of reformist aspirations and economic stagnation, the mighty socialist state has once again risen from its ashes as Dimitry Yazov and the Red Army crushed the counter-revolutionaries in 1996. In the revitalization of socialist patriotism, a phenomenon called Red Nationalism begins to seep across their little world: The Red Army and the MIR Space Station has become symbolic pride for the workers, and the miraculous recovery of their once-stagnating economy has reinvigorated the sense of selfless patriotism and ideological prowess of world socialism across the entire globe. In turn, they set their sights at the air and sea as they begin to develop their technological feat into a higher stage, with wonder projects such as the Nuclear-Powered Ulyanovsk Supercarrier is ready to sail across the seas and the MiG LMFI eager to dominate the skies. Their scientific aspirations have also led to the development of their own domestic computers and telecommunications, forming to what their rivals refer to as the Cyber-Curtain.
With their rejuvenation, socialist causes begin to incur again across the entire world. In West Africa, Sankara’s vision of a socialist continent begins to seep over the region while President Cuomo’s idleness has left his revolutionary aspiration unscathed, with countries such as Sierra Leone and Liberia on the verge of falling into his hands as they’re plunged into a civil war. In the Americas, the fear of a communist insurgence is becoming a reality as Venezuela has fallen under the helm of Hugo Chavez. Their aspirations are paramount as the democratization of Brazil inspires many to pivot to a more left-wing prospect despite Ronaldo Caiado’s victory: The MST Syndicalist movement is radicalizing, and the militant insurgencies begin to spread across Peru and Colombia. In Southeast Asia, Thailand stands triumphant after the Third Cambodian Indochina War, and it seems like an armed invasion throughout Thailand looks rather evident, with communist guerrillas skulking within their forests.
However, to the West, the Land of the Free looks rather meek after the failure of the 1996 Coup. Under President Cuomo’s government, the United States has transformed into a welfare state experiencing a massive stage of social liberalizations: The rise of Feminism, Pro-Weed Legalization, and Pro-LGBT aspirations takes a toll over the Continental United States to its grandest stage, at least when it comes to the western hemisphere. Despite his triumphs, he has left a legacy of high inflation which weakens the country's economy, with many American youths facing difficult prospects for searching for new paths in the job market and rising living cost is slowly creeping into their way of life. This eventually leads to the rise of two forms of reactionary conservatism: One that aspires for a new extremist and populist form of right-wing momentum and neoconservative think tanks that advocate an aggressive and rather jingoistic response to the threat of Soviet resurgence. And with the Dot-Com Bubble pushing many telecommunication and computing companies into severe bankruptcy, the domestic development of their aforementioned industries has set their progress into a stagnation.
Cuomo’s apathy over the concerns of world politics has become stringent in their cause to contain the communist threat and left their once glowing prestige as the defender of democracy to crumble in the face of many. Perceived by even their European allies to be weak and pathetic, many begin to set their own independent ambitions to answer the changing tides: With France, under a new populist government, acts on their own accord as they exert their influence across the former colonies throughout Africa and orchestrated the referendum of Quebec’s independence. Their grip over Asia, Africa, and even the Americas are faltering before their eyes: Thailand is at a brink of an imminent hellfire waged by their triumphant Vietnamese, Zaire and Liberia is plunged under a fiery civil war, and Peru and Colombia are facing the growing communist incursion and further radicalization across South America.
With the Soviet Union marching back into the fold and current administration under John Kerry struggling against the crippling tides, the cold war seems to be escalating to its hottest point. It will be a matter of time when the two Great Powers clashes under a great climax, only to have the world under a radioactive edge.

A Follow-Up
World maps aren't my cup of tea. If there's one form of cartography I truly despise, it's these kinds of form. Most of them are limited in both scope and the projection they have to be shown, which kind of strains on how I design them. My first foray on the subject isn't something I'm proud of either, especially since I have to concern myself over the design constraints and optimizing it into less than 10 MBs. But, the folks from HOI4's modding team - Darkest Hour, allowed me to revise them again and used my experiences over to improve something I consider faulty at best.A Follow-Up
This map is based on the upcoming submod for Darkest Hour: Crimson Days. They came to me and offered the materials and writing pieces necessary to make the piece happen. I didn't expect much since I assumed it's going to be another wacky modern-day mod layered with a shitty amount of vaporwave and memes, but as I read it through, it rather reminds me a lot of Watchmen in terms of worldbuilding. It's a world where technology is heading in a different direction, with mobile phones and personal computers being relatively young considering the more severe consequences of the Dot-Com Bubble. But at the same time, it's a world where the space race is still prevalent throughout the scene of the Cold War, which means the technology behind is more interesting than most will assume.
Making maps based on their design preference is rather difficult since my aforementioned distaste for the type of maps and designing it into something techy and computerized. While they did provide me some references to what style I should use, but I surfed on my own accord and based on World In Conflict, another alternative history fiction based on the Cold War. I tried to be more constrained when it comes to the design: There was a concept where I tried to layer it with CRTs in Photoshop, but the file conversion doesn't work for some reason; I tried to add cities and towns into the mix, but that kind of conflicts with the simple but computerized look I want to achieve.
Sorry if my yammering is a grammatical disaster; I'm writing this in ad-hoc I don't really have much time to check the paragraphs. I hope y'all love it, spend a lot of time making it work.
