Thank you! That state towards the northwest isn’t a “Pakistan” (it includes Patiala and Himachal Pradesh after all), but rather the “Punjabi Republic”, a successor state to the Sikh Empire which retained full independence from the Raj - culturally it’s very much a “Greater Punjab” in a way that Pakistan is not.

Between the map and the very detailed outlines this is, IMHO, some of the best India-focused content on this site. Nice job, or should I say Lai Bhaari!

I do agree with Bruce that seeing Punjab and Sindh as part of the same entity was initially weird; one of the overdone alternate history tropes when it comes to India is that Pakistan or some variant of Pakistan inevitably forms despite it forming in OTL only due to very specific circumstances. Especially in a world where there is no United India, it seems unlikely to me that Sindh would ever join a union with Punjab, at least by choice.

History

When he was forty years old, the prophet Muhammad (Pax ei, as his two billion followers would state after hearing his name) reportedly received visions from the archangel Gabriel while meditating in a cave. From then on, he would spread the word of Allah among the people of his town of Mecca. Muhammad’s religion, Islam, would not be tolerated among the pagan Arabs, and he and his followers were cast out within a few years, some going to the lands of Abbasinya across the Red Sea and others (Muhammad among them) would going the city of Ta’if.

Ta’if rejected him immediately, and with nowhere to go he set off on a journey which would fundamentally shake humanity to its core. He traveled North, echoing the paths of the caravans which he partook in, travelling to Yathrib, Tabuk and then finally ending up in the city of Jerusalem. The prophet was caught by the Roman authorities, who put him on trail and took him to the great city of Constantinople, where Muhammad was granted audience with emperor Heraclius himself, who was weary from the recent war with the Persians.

To everyone’s surprise, Heraclius embraced the message of the prophet, which sparked a devastating civil war within Christendom. The pope from Rome, having heard the message of the prophet, converted to Islam along with much of the Roman church. The Emperor, the Prophet and his followers fighting for their life in Jerusalem would flee to the city of Rome.

Muhammad died a few years later, having had his revelations, the Quran documented by Roman scholars. However, the city was under siege, but miraculously, it was broken by armed and angry defenders of the faith. The city of Rome, the site of one of the largest empires the world had ever seen, would now unleash a campaign of pure tactical brilliance against the Christian world. Byzantium was beat down so hard that all that were left of them were some possessions in Egypt and the Levant; not to mention that the Franks, Visigoths, Lombards and Saxons were completely enveloped by the Caliphate of Rome, now under the banner of Islam.

The Roman Caliphate could eventually fall, leaving way to many smaller yet formidable kingdoms. Major ones include Hispania, Saxony, Frankia, Bulgaria, Angland and Africa, who would fight many wars with each other over control of the holy land in Italia. New sects were spawned from mainstream Islam, such as Aliic Islam, which emphasized the importance of Muhammad’s bloodline, the Carthaginian Orthodox Caliphate, which was formed due to disagreement with the policies in Rome, and the much later formed Johanid branch of islam, which preaches liberation from all caliphates and a personal connection with god (as well as getting rid of doctines such as the ban on interest and pork).

Despite being thoroughly humiliated, the Christian world would not back down. Missionaries spread across the Arabian peninsula and into Himyar (although they would fail to re-convert Abbasinya, now a Muslim stronghold) and eventually bring Christianity to Persia by the conversion of one of their greatest emperors, who spread the religion into India. Many wars occurred in India between Christianity and Hinduism, who battled across many kingdoms on the subcontinent. Eventually, Christianity would reach the islands of Sumudera, which is now the largest Christian country in the world.

Competition between Islamic Europe and the Christian middle east would be a major point of contention in the coming millennia. Famous among these were the Proelian Wars, fought in response to the Christian turk’s retaking of Constantinople (although the war eventually shifted into a campaign for the holy land, where the Muslims of Europe managed to gain a small foothold in Jerusalem, but failed to reach Mecca). Another notable incident would be the conquest of the city of Carthage in the Christian year of 1453 (843 of the much more widely used Islamic calendar centered around Muhammad’s revelation), which sent shock waves across Europe and the Islamic world, bringing it into conflict with the Christian Kananid Empire of the Sahara.

The taking of Egypt by the Kananids would result in Europe being locked out of the spice trade (save for a rather wealthy Greek Mercantile republic), which caused European traders to look outwards. A Hispanian Explorer named Vitalan De Lafama would sail across the Atlantic Ocean, looking for a route to the Asian spice trade, but stumble upon a few previously undiscovered continents, the lands of Aquilafama and Australafama, which would be conquered and settled by the Hispanians, Anglanders, Franks, Frisians, Navaros and even the Kanarids (whose colonies would be taken over by other powers).

Eventually, the Islamic world eclipsed the Christian one, with the advent of industrialization and new social theories rapidly changing the worldview of Europe. Secular politics would come to dominate the Western world, while the Kanarids and their rival, the Atabeg Empire (a Turkic empire centered in Persia) would fall back on reactionary politics. The European powers established worldwide trade networks, whose outposts soon became colonies, transforming them into world powers.

Europe would become a victim of its own successes, though. The first and second Great European wars saw these intercontinental empires fighting each other across the world, greatly diminishing European morale, leading to the breakup of their colonial empires. New ideologies, such as Bulgaria’s Ferregulism (Iron rule, essentially fascism) and Collectivism (decentralized communism used in China and Tawantia) would add gunpowder to the barrel Europe was building. And the Franks and Saxons, historical enemies, are what would likely set the spark to what coil be the most deadly conflict in human history.

The world today

Aquilafama and Australafama are locked in a three way power struggle between Marcellia (an incredibly wealthy former Hispanian colony), Wexterland (a strong former Anglish colony with a massive population) and the Collectevists (currently just Tawantia and Newumbria, although they rapidly expanding). Most Lafaman countries are allies of one of these three power blocks, and they are mostly separate from European politics, although the Europeans do still hold a couple islands and territories in the new world.

Europe is a powder keg, as described before. Tensions are high between Saxony and Frankia, with the Ferregulist powers of Brittania and Bulgaria looking to sweep them clean once an opportunity arises. There are also large amounts of refugee flows coming in from Africa, with Hispania taking in the bulk of them. It seems as if the age of European dominance is over, and it is time for new powers to take their throne.

Africa is a jumbled postcolonial mess. Civil wars are common across the continent, with the Europeans superimposed borders causing large amounts of strife across the land. A few powers have broken this cycle, those being the Nigerians, the Ethopians and Imaziya (which came out of the core of the Kanarid Empire).

Just because it is mainly Christian instead of Muslim does not change the fact that the middle east is about as unstable as a place you can get. Kurds are revolting, Persians are covertly funding terrorists and you get discriminated on your religion every day. The biggest point of contention, though, would be the Holy Republic of Arabia, which was made up of Islamic pilgrims wishing to return to the holy city of Mecca, much to the dismay of everyone else in the region. Christians send suicide bombers there every day and talk about how persecuted they are in Arabia, while the Arabians point out on how they have the highest living standards and most tolerant laws in the region, while sending out missiles into the Amharan occupied territory.

The rest of Asia is generally a mix of Christian and other religions. India is mainly run by Christian Emperors ruling over Hindu subjects, as well as a couple angry Hindu states. Bulgaria dominates Central Asia, while the Chinese run much of Southeast Asia, with the incredibly diverse Sumudera rising to challenge their power in the region. The rising power of Joseon (Korea) and China are currently fighting an apocalyptic war with one another, which would likely be roped into European conflicts. And again, the Bulgarians are waiting to strike.

An odd entity in this world, the United Dominions of Australia is a confederation of former Anglic colonies under the rule of Angland’s old monarch, which fled the Ferregulist government of Britannia. Australia is a rather wealthy place, and is neutral in world politics, although it is likened to a sleeping dragon.

Direct Rule from Brussels
From the beginning of the 2010s, the cohesion of the European Union has been tested by several issues, including a debt crisis in some of the Eurozone countries, increasing migration from Africa and Asia, and the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the EU. A referendum in the UK on its membership of the European Union was held in 2016, with 51.9% of participants voting to leave. The UK formally notified the European Council of its decision to leave on 29 March 2017, initiating the formal withdrawal procedure for leaving the EU; following extensions to the process, the UK left the European Union on 31 January 2020, though most areas of EU law continued to apply to the UK for a transition period which lasted until 23:00 GMT on the 31 December 2020.

From the 2020s, the effects of the 2020 Coronavirus Pandemic greatly challenged the integrity of the European Union and debates over how to respond to the epidemic and its economic fallout have opened up a rift between Northern and Southern European member states, reminiscent of debates over the 2010s European debt crisis.

The rift between the Northern countries and the Southern ones would only escalated even further. It eventually reached a breaking in the mid-2030s due to a poor response to an ever increasing new refugee crisis in the Mediterranean and, the people of Spain, Italy and Greece voted to leave the union in a referendum.

The effects of the European Winter, a series of major terrorist attacks on major European cities, in 2039 would lay the foundation of European Central Defense Forces, it would be a primarily gendarme-oriented force, providing greater internal security within the EU member states. Following advancements in defense, including the EuroCorps, would allow for the greater coordination of EU military policy, providing further internal security for members.

A growing movement to further centralize the EU would come to existence following the United States' exit from world politics and created an realization that without the help and guidance of America, Europe would be all to itself, alone, and vulnerable to the new rising powers. Further backed by the rise of increasing radical Islam, a ever more growing refugee crisis around the world due to climate change. Eventually, calls for greater unity would be made from members., especially in a time of unprecedented change.

This would be the beginning of the European Confederation, and more would
see the creation of a European supernation as necessary to Europe's survival as a whole.

That would come to minds of the masses following the Annihilation of Marseilles in 2052, the first ever nuclear terrorist conducted on a major city, martial law was imposed on almost every single EU member state and it would be the ultimate wake up call for all to see. In a referendum the following year, in which an astounding 45 million signatures were signed from every single member state, 62% voted yes to the formation of a European Confederation. The following years would the greatest changes to European society since the end of the Second World War as various European and national institutions underwent massive changes to prepare for the coming unification.

In 2059, the dream of a better Europe was reached as 25 of the EU's member states committed to ceding their sovereignty to the EC. The European Confederation was officially born.

The Confederation itself is politically nightmarishly chaotic as extremist ideologies trickle in from every side of the political spectrum. Martial law is still imposed in all member states due to the ever persisting fear of something on the scale of Marseilles would happen once more, the ever deteriorating state of world as nations fall into civil war after civil war again, and the climate refugee crisis being at it's greatest.

As extremists try to subvert the liberal democracy of the state, thousands of refugees constantly being washed away by hurricanes in the Mediterranean, America engulfed in a 2nd civil war and as the coasts are being swallowed by the sea, Europe is in it's darkest hour yet it seems.

Thank you for the high praise!

Oh, yes, I hate that cliche, and I certainly see how that may have seemed like that. I based Sindh being part of Punjab on how Maharaja Ranjit Singh of the Sikh Empire wanted to conquer Sindh (probably to gain control over all of the Indus River trade), but didn't really get around to it before the British beat him to it. ITTL, with the British Empire having much more indirect rule over India, he does get around to doing it, and despite a fair bit of resentment to being ruled from Lahore, Sindh remains part of Punjab due to commercial links and all that.

Here is my submission for the cover contest.. The write-up is a lot shorter than mine usually are but hopefully the detail in the map answers any questions you might have about the world. If not, questions and comments are always appreciated.

Prophet Swap

This is a world where the centers of the Christian and Muslim faiths are switched. Here, the Moors were able to get a stronger foothold in Spain in the late 8th century and managed to push into France, and from there into Italy, Germany, and Britain. With Islamic holy warriors expanding east from the Rhine, Christianity seemed in danger in the late first millennium. This all came to an end in the middle of the 10th century, when the Qipchak hordes came out from Central Asia. Converted to the Nestorian form of Christianity by two Indian monks a century and a half earlier, the Qipchaks were devout and willing to do anything necessary to spread their faith. The Qipchaks conquests went on for more than a century and when the dust had settled, they ruled a series of states stretching from the Baltic to Egypt and had displaced the Islamic realms east of the Sinai.

Though the Qipchak overlordships would slowly fade away and the Turks were integrated into native society, the Nestorian faith remained strong. While this was occurring in the east, the Muslims of Western Europe had discovered two new continents to the west. The sea-faring Muslim powers quickly established colonies there in hopes of enriching themselves. Using the money from its prosperous colonial holdings, a particularly philosophical Emir of Greater al-Andalus devised a new theory of government based on the early Rashidun Caliphate. He wrote that it was the role of a monarch to provide for all citizens physical needs and ensure a basic level of prosperity. This theory, later called National Zakat, became popular across the world.

The modern world is one in which Islam holds the strongest position but is not totally dominant. Arabic is the language of business and science, while Islam is growing slowly but surely across the world. Of course, the Islamic world is not unified, and is divided between the more economically progressive conglomeration of various former colonies that is the United Islamic Polities on one side and the old order European states on the other. And then there are the Shias, long discriminated against but now in possession of a hefty nuclear arsenal, and the Kawnists, Muslims in the southern hemisphere that believe a green alien descended from the heavens to bring proof of many worlds with a Muhammad having existed on each one.

The Christian world is very much in the shadow of the Islamic world, and under the Christian Union, it is clear that they hope to level the playing field whether through diplomacy or through war. On the fringes of the world there are dangers in the form of rogue, angry states. China was rocked by a revolt from the Renists, a collectivist, ultranationalist faction, and while it was down, the Manchus and Buddhist Union joined in and even nuked Beijing. Finally there is the Zunbil Empire, a totalitarian state run by a priesthood committed to expansion. The Empire has flexed its muscle recently by threatening the Persians.

This is a world with good and bad, rich and poor, peaceful and warlike nations. On balance, it is not much better than our own. It is not better or worse it is just different.

TAMED LANDS
TEN YEARS AFTER THE FLASH

1609534698916.png
1609534721074.png

A decade ago, a bright flash of light would take four American states from different worlds and different times and place them onto a virgin earth, completely uninhabited by humans. Expansion from these areas has been slow, hampered by unrest and supply problems at home, and although there are often farms that dot the fringes of the established borders and the banks of the great American rivers and occasional short resource-gathering expeditions from companies, those who venture further out into the truly untamed wilderness either return to civilized lands or are never heard from again.

What was ISOTed?

1857 Maryland, Charles Jennings, the Army of the Delaware (from Charcolt's Hard Graft)
1867 Nicaragua, Elijah Greywater (from Charcolt's
Hard Graft)
1964 New York, Jimmy Falstaff (from Prussian1871's
A Time for Greatness)
1968 Michigan, Charles Clarence (from TransUral Empire's
Winter in America)

The Big Three

The New United States of America - While the states of Michigan and New York had been transported from different worlds, they found themselves with very similar cultures and technology levels, and they found themselves in very similar situations - while they were mostly able to keep the peace in the suburbs and urban areas, their primary metro areas of New York City and Detroit would both fall into a significant period of unrest. Due to these circumstances, representatives from both states would convene and draw out an agreement in which they would unify and form the United States, with Michigan's own president-elect Charles Clarence becoming President and New York governor Nelson Rockefeller becoming Vice President.

Although the NUSA is certainly the strongest nation on paper, it is still wracked by political divisions. A new political movement led by talk-show host Jimmy Falstaff is capturing the minds of the youth vote, drumming up anti-"establishment" sentiment as President Rockefeller tries to move past the race riots and relocations of his predecessor's tenure, while threading an uneasy path between conservatism and liberalism. More worryingly, however, the states of Michigan and New York have proven to have divergent interests, as New York tries to increase its soft power while Michigan is intent on consolidating its hold on the Great Lakes. Whether the NUSA will survive, and what will come up after a potential collapse, is up for debate.

The State of Maryland - For Maryland, the flash would come just as Charles Jennings and his Army of the Delaware were making their way to Richmond, sure that they would overthrow the tyrant Bradley. Thus, the supply issues that would have been normally encountered were confounded, with the Army of the Delaware ultimately having to gain most of their food from hunting, foraging, and fishing in the forests and ocean around Maryland. This would also lead to a somewhat awkward arrangement between Jennings and civilian governor Henry Winter Davis to control the state, that would only be made further awkward when the Navy - both the Naval Academy and similar naval vessels and a squadron from Nicaragua defecting after it declared its independence from a non-existent United States - was added into the equation, while Maryland continued to govern itself by its state constitution. Maryland would have two important achievements under Governor Davis - the signing of the Treaty of New York with the NUSA and the abolition of slavery. The situation would be cleared up after the death of Governor Davis and the subsequent election of Charles Jennings, who therefore held all of the executive power in the state.

There are large political divisions in Maryland, too, with these divisions being based on whether one was an army man, a navy man, or a civilian. The cooperation of Davis and Jennings and subsequent election of Jennings has meant that an alliance of the army and civilians has dominated Maryland, but nonetheless Jennings' recently-convened Maryland Constitutional Convention has so far been deadlocked over debate over what the government should be. While the Treaty of New York, with its assurances of peace and free trade between Maryland and NUSA, is broadly popular in Maryland, it does have its support. Most notably, however, there are many within Maryland who hold a firm distrust of the navy and its various "expeditions" to see if there's any other human-inhabited part of the world, especially since its settling of Bermuda.

La Segunda República Federal de Centroamérica - The Flash would come during the last night of Elijah Greywater's long governorship. At least in the capitol of Managua, news of the event would not come until the afternoon, by which time Greywater's successor had been sworn in as governor and Greywater was on his way to his private villa. When news had arrived, though, Greywater was urged to return to Managua. After encouraging the US Navy detachment in the Nicaragua Canal to head north to confirm shaky reports of some American presence in the Atlantic, he would promptly declare independence from the United States, declaring himself the President of the Second Republic of Central America, in a single stroke helping to reach back out to the majority-Spanish-speaking population of his new nation and establishing the pretext for rapid expansion. Greywater has cracked down on what few parts of democracy can't be overriden by his machines, and he has ensured continued Grenadier dominance of the Republic.

While Greywater's political machine, charitable acts, jingoistic expansion, and crackdown on political opposition have made him very popular within Central America itself, he is not popular with whatever semblance of an international community there is. Central America would be a pariah, if not invaded, if not for the fact that Greywater holds the strategically vital Nicaragua Canal, which allows for a much easier crossing to the Pacific, and his nation is the producer of tropical goods that are very much desired in his northern neighbors - coffee, sugar, bananas, and more, and that Central America is far away, leading to difficulties with supply. Despite Greywater's cleverness in leveraging these factors, it has not stopped his fellow nations from peacefully but actively stifling Central American influence in the Caribbean, and ensuring that Greywater cannot completely recreate the fantasies of the Golden Circle.

[1] - The lands of southern New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New England were declared as temporarily terra nullius as a part of the Treaty of New York, to help keep the peace and prevent any border disputes from arising. The Philadelphia Route, a road and railroad jointly patrolled by Yankees and Marylanders to discourage banditry, helps connect Maryland and NUSA by land.

[2] - While the Erie Beltway breaks the terra nullius clause of the Treaty of New York, it is in line with another clause that guarantees NUSA control over the Great Lakes, and it is also yet another valuable connection between Michigan and New York.

[3]- New York is very much against Michiganian expansion to the south, which is why Michigan keeps their forays into Indiana a top secret. If this ever gets out, this would be another straw on the camel's back for NUSA.

[4]- While New Chicago is officially affiliated with the NUSA, it has become a refuge for liberals and leftists who feel out of place in the NUSA, and it has become the hub of the counter-culture movements.

[5] - Wisconsin was deemed as a territory because New York didn't really care about it and Michigan wanted more control and direct access to the Mississippi (although both it and the Ohio River were deemed as demilitarized free-trade zones by the Treaty of New York).

[6] - While it is low-priority compared to its American ventures, Michigan is interested into gaining more control over the Lake Superior region.

[7]- With no Canada to worry about, the Ontario Peninsula is the most simple connection between Michigan and New York. In the spirit of America, it was quickly declared as a third state, and as a result it would be the tie-breaker in a dispute between Michigan and New York. The north of the state is very sparsely inhabited at the moment.

[8] - The Marylander Navy secured Bermuda, and it would serve well as a general maritime hub for both the navy and fishing, so it was officially annexed into Maryland, officially under the control of naval officials. This would be the cause of concern for many Marylanders.

[9] - The Tidewater region has become a haven for fishermen who don't want to pay Maryland's taxes or be subject to its laws. However, it is safeguarded by Maryland as it is a great jumping-off point for further expansion in the South.

[10] - The Army of the Delaware's mission was to seize Northern Virginia, and many soldiers in the Army would continue in the mission. As such, the Virginia Territory would be declared, mostly inhabited (and run) by those either currently serving in or retired from the Army, which is Maryland's principle expansion other than its incorporation of all of the Delmarva peninsula and its expansion to reach the Ohio River.

[11] - A combination of more revolutionary-minded individuals, especially African-Americans, from the NUSA and freed slaves from Maryland would come to Haiti (with various levels of willingness), a state that was quickly given military and financial support by both the NUSA and Maryland to ensure that the public outrage that would come from the failure of such a venture would never happen, and to hem both the Haitians and the Central Americans in. Due to this, Haiti is surprisingly doing better than its Old World counterpart, although Voodoo has become just as popular.

[12] - Slavery is officially banned in each of the Big Three Nations, but Jamaica would become a home for those in Central America that would kidnap their former slaves (who were often working on the same plantations that they had been before emancipation due to sharecropping) to abscond to, later joined by Maryland slave owners as abolition was very close to becoming a reality. While this slave state is hated by most, especially Haiti, it is propped up by Greywater to help him gain influence in the Caribbean, and Haiti is held back by the NUSA and Maryland for fear of causing a war.

[13] - The Central American dream of reunifying what the nation had once held (along with the Yucatan) has not been completed yet, but many fear where Greywater will turn next.

[14] - It is common knowledge that if anyone settled Cuba it would result in war being declared by the other side, so the island remains untouched.

[15] - A bunch of wealthy New Yorkers were incensed that their winter homes had been left behind in the Flash, and they sought to rebuild it. They would quickly be given support by the NUSA, as another way of ensuring influence in the Caribbean and hemming the Central Americans in. The Bahamas has become a land of vacation resorts, summer homes, and a few scattered naval bases (which isn't too different from its status in the 1960s before the Flash).

This is my first foray into map-making - criticism is welcome!

One question - why is northern New Jersey part of New York in NUSA? Especially since other states seem to have been de facto resurrected.
North New Jersey was annexed by New York to help give a cushion to NYC, it was settled primarily by New Yorkers, and it was deemed as having too small of a geographic area to be created as a state. The state of Michigan is also slightly expanded, having annexed Manitoulin and some islands in Lake Superior.

Keep me updated on this one.

So as 2020 is now over I have finished several End of 2020 Maps.
The below shows the the political (see: governing parties and ideologies) map of the world as of Dec. 31, 2020.

A few notes;
-There are alot of cases where it's really hard to find what a party or group actually espouses or supports, as well as alot of cases where the ruling party simply has no ideology and just exists for the sake of existing/keeping the ruling group in power.
-The official ideology is what is used in most cases, so for example while China may have a de facto hybrid ideological system, it remains officially Communist (and thus shown as Far Left) and the governing elite pays at the very least lip service to the idea, so it's shown as such.

Iori, I cannot comment on most of the world, but for Chile, the farthest groups to the right officially broke with the gorvenment.

It's clear you've done a lot of research into this and it's a useful map, but is it a bit risqué given the forum's current politics rule? I'm already biting my tongue reference the UK being a bit too light blue on the map for my liking. 😬

Could be a very useful addition to the Politics forum though?

Isn't there a conservative party in the Obligatory Finnish Coalition Mashup(TM)?
The current cabinet coalition consists of Centrists, Swedes (officially also centrists), SocDems, Far Lefts, and Greens. The plain vanilla right wingers and the far right racists have seats in the parliament, but they're not part of the government coalition.

Ah, ok. I knew there was a mostly left-leaning coalition, with more conservative elements in it. I just wasn't sure how much.
