military&political alliances.png

A map of military/political alliances of a timeline-thing I am kind of working on.
1. European Council is a mix of EU and NATO. It grew out of an alliance of united Baltics, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary which was founded in 1979. In 1985 the German Empire joined and basically became the leading member of it. France and Ottoman Turkey joined in 1987. After which all three were kind of the leading member. It is currently one of the strongest powers in the world, with two nuclear powers (Germany and Turkey) and a quite strong combined economy/military. (It helped that Continental Europe was almost entirely free of the communist bloc).
2. Russian Empire is also one of the strongest powers in the world and a nuclear power. Russia is quite closely allied with the EC. As Russians are currently deployed in support of the Congolese Provisional Government (which is why Congo is shown as an EC ally here). Close Ottoman allies in the Istanbul Pact (the three nations in personal union: Algeria, Hejaz-Levant, Union of Arab States and the two republics of Egypt and Azerbaijan) are also shown on this map. The Reichspakt (basically German Commonwealth), consisting of Senegal, Ivory Coast, Togo, Cameroon and Equatorial Africa (OTL Gabon and Republic of Congo) (similar to OTL Commonwealth but with some economic and common protection aspects) is also shown on map. Vatican, Switzerland, Norway, Georgia, Armenia and Turkestan also have close relationships to EC and Russia. Cabinda (independent) is included as it serves as a base of operations for Russian military in its support of the Congolese government. Chad and Darfur also currently house EC troops for support against/protection against the Chenists (*Trotskyist) and groups tied to Peoples Revolutionary Army of the Congo.
3. 4th International is an organization based in the Chinese Social Republic. It consists of officially Chenist nations and Chenist political parties internationally. Could uncharitably be called "China and its puppets". China is a fairly big power, and a rising one (how successful the funding of terrorists/revolutionaries will be in the long run is debatable).
4. Officially Communist one party states that are not officially Chenist. Along with the 4th International, the last remnants of the formerly expansive Communist Bloc. Three nations in could be divided into two. One is the American Socialist Federation (East America) which is somewhere between OTL DPRK writ large and OTL China. It is somewhat isolated but powerful (has nuclear weapons). It follows far more Orthodox Marxism. The second is the Democratic Peoples Republics of Central Africa and South Sudan (West South Sudan). These two states were established by the Peoples Revolutionary Army of the Congo. They currently act as a base of operations and support base for that organization. They follow a more extreme far-left ideology (these two states and that terrorist organization are closest analogues to current OTL Islamic-Fundamentalist Terrorists).
5. The United Kingdom of Great Britain, Dominion of Canada, Union of South Africa and Dominion of Malaysia are the major Commonwealth Realms. Other Commonwealth Realms are Papua New Guinea, Micronesia, Pacifica and Polynesia. The Realms are far more integrated than the Commonwealth as a whole (and far more so than OTL). The 4 major realms and two of the republics (specifically Australia and New Zealand) share the same nuclear arsenal and a single seat in the International Concord Forum of Great Powers (a mix of UN Security Council and G8) and often manage to remain a single political bloc. Minor realms don't bring much to the Commonwealth but likely due to this are accepting of less freedom in international relations compared to republican Commonwealth (thought it is quite a small degree of difference).
6. Rest of the British Commonwealth of Nations. A mix of OTL CoN and Commonwealth of Independent States (in that many members are former parts of the largest and most powerful communist state). Calling it the republican part of the Commonwealth is strictly speaking incorrect as Brunei and Aceh are members. ITTL the Commonwealth is far more integrated and comprehensive than the OTL version, thought still nowhere the level of OTL NATO or EU. Of the Commonwealth members that are not Commonwealth realms, two of them, Australia and New Zealand are holders of the Commonwealth collective nuclear arsenal (along with the 4 major realms) and part of the collective great power seat. Otherwise Nigeria is confirmed to own nuclear weapons remaining from the Britannic Union while Kenya is suspected of having a similarly sourced arsenal. Commonwealth forces have deployed in Uganda against African Peoples Liberation Army-Uganda and also are providing Russians limited assistance in Congo.

Dear Mr. [REDACTED]
As I'm sure you're already aware, the recent incident between Red Chinese and Japanese forces along the Yalu was not an isolated mistake. I now find it impossible to ignore that the Communist regime has deliberately and openly defied the military superiority of the United States and her allies. It is my opinion that this dramatic shift in attitude is but the culmination of two decades of neglect for America's strategic interests in the Far East, which has grown to such degree that Red China is considering an armed confrontation as a feasibility. Mr. [REDACTED], this administration will not stand idly as the vile influences of Communism rampage across the Asiatic continent like a cancer. It is imperative, an immediate necessity, to significantly increase the presence of military personnel in China and Japanese Korea, and to multiply in equal measure the aid we deliver to our allies for defense purposes. Failure to do so as earnestly as possible will very likely result in the complete collapse of America's presence in the East Pacific and the Orient, and the exponential expansion of Communism. For the sake of democracy and freedom, I expect that the United States will respond accordingly.

I appreciate your support
Regards, [REDACTED]

Ye-Quor is more of an enigma. I first encountered it while looking for maps of the Strait of Anian; I used a map by Thomas Jefferys for most of its route. Interestingly, the map appears to indicate that a Japanese expedition had taken place on Alaska and in the Arctic Sea. Up at the top of the map are the islands of Ye-Quor, and that's so far been the only reference I've been able to find online. If I were more familiar with the Japanese literature of the era or the exploration of the Pacific Northwest I might be able to find something related. As I develop the Hyperborean continent, I'll have to take a deeper dive on it.
Interesting, maybe I can help provide some background.

When I read this part what came up to my mind was this old Japanese map which, according to the Harvard University in which is stored, was printed in the 1850s during the Tokugawa Period. I went to check and there were indeed several islands up in the Arctic Circle in the same place indicated there which are labeled, written right-to-left, as 夜人国 (yajin-koku, basically "land of the people of the night"), and even there I started noticing a curious assonance.
Another search around and I find out that there exists a vocabulary entry actually for 夜国 (ya-koku, meaning more simply "land of the night"), which is lifted from Nihon Kokugo Daijiten, according to Wikipedia one of the largest and more comprehensive dictionaries to be published in recent times. What's more, the term with this same exact meaning as below, is attested in two Japanese manuscripts, one from 1787 and another in 1751, which overlaps the same time period as the Tomas Jeffreys map perfectly.
Turns out that it simply designates, not so surprisingly and a bit anticlimactically, those territories which are situated so upper north that, as the name says, for the greatest part of the year it's perpetual night and there's no sunlight to be seen.
Unfortunately i see no mention of dwaves even in the quotes provided as examples: the 1787 source (which is a "Dutch Studies" compendium apparently, so I don't know how much it was information the Japanese simply heard from the Dutch rather than finding out themselves) simply states that as the sun sinks further south, the ya-koku get darker and darker.

Sooo... Just a theory of mine based on this short research, but even factoring in what possible differences in pronounciation there was at the time (not knowledgeable on this at all), maybe the "ye-que" on the map is a distortion of what "ya-koku" might have sounded like to an untrained foreign ear?

A "no WWII in the Pacific" scenario, then? Given that everyone involved probably has nukes at this point, things are likely to end in tears.
Not quite. Allied intervention in China sends Mao into Soviet-occupied Manchuria, where they establish a North-Korea-like situation. Japan, which is never nuked, retakes Korea and Taiwan as a bulwark against the Commies. You're right about the nukes, though

The concept of dwarves/pygmies in the Arctic Circle is a very very old one, dating back at least to the Mercator map of the North Pole and possibly as far as the 14th century Inventio Fortunato. Possibly, it was inspired by the very real stocky builds of those living to the far north.

Very fine. What's the green area west of Norumbega? Wilderness? And is that dark green area north of the Straits more wilderness with bigfoots? Would make more sense for Estotiland to be across the straits from Norumbega rather than the way you have it right up against the polar desolation, which seems to contradict this:

The far north of Turtle Island is a desolate place. There are fur trappers and bigfoot tribes that might be called hospitable, but the number of ruins from all eras of history seem to increase the further north one goes. The wildlife also becomes increasingly violent when presented with humans, a trait unfounded in southern populations.

Where's the Land of Toloman?
I tried to create a basic biome map for the continent, so that area around Norumbega is all wilderness. I think I realized a bit too late that the map's biomes looked a bit too similar to the nation-states. I based Estotiland's position on Ortelius's Typus Orbis Terrarium, but I'll be revisiting the Zeno Narrative soon and chances are it'll get shuffled to a more hospitable spot. Toloman is the dream!Alaskan peninsula; I was going to mark it as occupied by a foreign power, but went against it.

Ay yes, I stumbled across that map some years ago.

Again, great work! I figured I knew more then just about anyone about this kind of stuff (was really surprised to see the Moon Eyed Azgen, for example) but you've put me to shame! Might just have to crib your notes in the future.
Thank you! The Moon-eyed people are really cool. I knew I wanted something that invoked creepy Appalachian dwellers and The Very Old Folk, but I wasn't sure if including them meant I'd have to add an explicit Pukwudgie nation-state or other human-like creatures from folklore.

I like this theory a lot, thank you for pointing me in this direction. @Flashman is probably correct that the dwarf comment is European-derived from encounters with the indigenous people in the North.

A Cold War Divided Greece

A map depicting an alternate end to the Greek Civil War.

Basically here in ttl, the Communists and left-leaning Republicans manage to attain victory on the mainland in the Greek Civil War that began in 1946. With most of the mainland falling to Communist Control, the Royal family and the Hellenic government fled to Crete where they form a government in exile. The unexpected fall of Greece to the Red Tide of Communism causes panic throughout Europe as the USSR now has access to the warm water Mediterranean ports through a friendly Greece. The exiled Kingdom of Greece now finds itself a propped up by the UK, France, and the US seeking to contain Soviet influence. In this timeline the Cold War is a bit more heated than otl, and the rump Kingdom of Greece ends up as a sort of Taiwan to the People's Republic of Greece. Eventually as the Communist government grows unpopular the people begin agitating for independence and an end to the Communist regime especially as the Orthodox Church is suppressed, and living standards decline in comparison to the more prosperous capitalist states. This resentment and tension finally boils over leading to the Greek Revolution of the 1980's with the people rising up against the tyrannical dictatorship as the Royalist armies are welcomed into Greece. The Revolution proved to be the first nail in the coffin for Soviet Empire as it caused a domino effect with nations like Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, and Poland soon having their own Revolutions. This eventually leads to the downfall of the Soviet Union culminating in the disastrous Second Russian Civil War of 1991 that led to the rise of the Vozhd Putin who serves as regent for the newly restored Romanovs.

Greece here develops into a Constitutional Monarchy here in ttl, though unlike say the UK, Belgium, or Spain, the monarchy has more executive powers here as a result of Greece being more of a de-facto Royalist dictatorship due to the circumstances surrounding the aftermath of the civil war. Though the government here is far more moderate and has begun to liberalize as the years pass. Greece after the Revolution becomes a robust economic power within Europe after the war, developing a major shipping industry and experiencing a massive economic boom following an influx of foreign investment.

What do you guys think of this map and the little mini-timeline I made?
@Basileus_Komnenos I am working on a time line that communist Greece conquers also Constantinople with help of the Soviet Union (Beria plan) , even though they loose some territories to a democratic Albania, with the kingdom of Greece in exile. It also features a North and South Germany and France, with Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria and under Romania under Western control.

Perhaps I have already published an equivalent version on the same subject in Map Thread XIX, but I represent to you a map with British Sister Republics under the French Revolution. In my opinion, it may be different from the previous one I proposed.

Since it's under the French Revolution, everything is in French.

Kernow ? Not Cornouaille ?
Also, while I can accept Hautes-Plaines, I'd rather suggest the Falaises for the département of Douvre. Or Pas-de-Douvres.
Normandie Septentrionale is :love:XD

Or I can suggest you this other map, without the Départements, since ITTL the French control the British Isles, no need to annex the country there, and it goes against the natural barriers.
