Map Thread XX

Here's a map of China in a TL where Tien An Men was successful, and the Communist regime falls. Only here, China collapses into different states: Tibet becomes independent again in the form of a parliamentary monarchy and abandoning the theocracy, Turkestan becomes an independent republic, Inner Mongolia is attached to the Republic of Mongolia, Manchuria becomes an independent republic but having a regime like Belarus, and the rest of China reunites with Taiwan to (re) become the Republic of China.

Based on an article which I read in BBC History magazine (https://www.historyextra.com/period...-odyssey-fleeing-william-conqueror-black-sea/), which the author also details on her own website (https://www.caitlingreen.org/2015/05/medieval-new-england-black-sea.html).

Essentially, the Anglo-Saxon varangians under Siward Barn/Bear(?) of Gloucester reassert Byzantine control in southern Crimea and the adjacent area (what we would call Kuban) after brief Tatar rule there. I suppose the alternate history element - map 2 - is during the slow collapse of the Byzantine Empire the Anglo-Saxons are able to establish their own power in Crimea and the Sea of Azov, before the Golden Horde sweep in and put an end to it, or at least its territories outside of the Crimean peninsula. A more ambitious alternate history may revolve around the Anglo-Saxons taking Taurida in its entirety, and perhaps re-aligning themselves with the Rus' principalities to make it last a little longer. The Anglo-Saxons apparently remained Catholic, so perhaps an accommodation could have been reached with the Genoans instead.

East Turkestan or Uyghuristan, not just Turkestan.

I'd like to point out that the 1989 Democracy Movement didn't necessarily intend to overthrow the CCP, but rather to call for political reform and a crackdown on corruption and nepotism. The Mongolia as shown on the map would also have a ~70% Han majority and the Manchuria a 95% Han majority.

Love this so much! Read that same article and it was on my mind.

Nice maps but would they have called themselves English or something more Germanic?

Nice maps but would they have called themselves English or something more Germanic?
I believe they would have. The Kingdom of England was in existance at the time, and as per the article, the Chronicon Laudunensis refers to the territory as Nova Anglia - "New England". Though the territory was also referred to as terram Saxorum "Saxon land", so they may have come to describe themselves merely as Saxons. In Anglo-Saxon, New England would be something like Nīwe Englaland and New Englanders as Nīwe Englisc, I think.
Edit: To put a different point, of the four settlements mentioned, three are named for Varangians - with the fourth being named Port Sussex. The idea of them calling themselves English is predicated on the idea they thought of themselves as substantially different to Varangians overall, which they may not have.

Was going to ask how Tirol got over there, then realized that it's based on an EU4 game.
I've had Ulster formed on Stettin before now!
I mean, I basically made Tirol-Baden happen, due to me wanting tyrol. I'll probably deal with them after my war with portugal and/or the turks

A Cold War Divided Greece
l2OrHos.png

A map depicting an alternate end to the Greek Civil War.

Basically here in ttl, the Communists and left-leaning Republicans manage to attain victory on the mainland in the Greek Civil War that began in 1946. With most of the mainland falling to Communist Control, the Royal family and the Hellenic government fled to Crete where they form a government in exile. The unexpected fall of Greece to the Red Tide of Communism causes panic throughout Europe as the USSR now has access to the warm water Mediterranean ports through a friendly Greece. The exiled Kingdom of Greece now finds itself a propped up by the UK, France, and the US seeking to contain Soviet influence. In this timeline the Cold War is a bit more heated than otl, and the rump Kingdom of Greece ends up as a sort of Taiwan to the People's Republic of Greece. Eventually as the Communist government grows unpopular the people begin agitating for independence and an end to the Communist regime especially as the Orthodox Church is suppressed, and living standards decline in comparison to the more prosperous capitalist states. This resentment and tension finally boils over leading to the Greek Revolution of the 1980's with the people rising up against the tyrannical dictatorship as the Royalist armies are welcomed into Greece. The Revolution proved to be the first nail in the coffin for Soviet Empire as it caused a domino effect with nations like Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, and Poland soon having their own Revolutions. This eventually leads to the downfall of the Soviet Union culminating in the disastrous Second Russian Civil War of 1991 that led to the rise of the Vozhd Putin who serves as regent for the newly restored Romanovs.

Greece here develops into a Constitutional Monarchy here in ttl, though unlike say the UK, Belgium, or Spain, the monarchy has more executive powers here as a result of Greece being more of a de-facto Royalist dictatorship due to the circumstances surrounding the aftermath of the civil war. Though the government here is far more moderate and has begun to liberalize as the years pass. Greece after the Revolution becomes a robust economic power within Europe after the war, developing a major shipping industry and experiencing a massive economic boom following an influx of foreign investment.

What do you guys think of this map and the little mini-timeline I made?
So this is a map I made as a sequel to the above map and its universe lore. @Comte de Dordogne I decided I'll make more maps of this universe. I'm thinking of making a map of ttl's Iron Curtain in the future.

This is a map of Italy and the Balkans in the Year 2000, after the collapse of the Soviet Union and its various Communist Satellite States.
One of the events that occur here is that the Italian monarchy barely manages to win the referendum on retaining the monarchy (In otl there was a lot of speculation that the election was rigged in the Republican favor). In ttl things like more monarchist turnout and the Pope supporting the Crown helps them gain victory. King Umberto II rules as a highly popular Constitutional Monarch. Though as a result of fears of a Communist insurrection after the fall of mainland Greece a military coup briefly takes place until the situation stabilizes. Though the government in Italy is more Parliamentary in character. Though unlike in Spain, or the UK the monarchy here has some more power here that it uses though it has become more liberalized over time. The survival of the Italian monarchy inspires the later restoration of the Portuguese monarchy after the death of its dictator which liberalizes much like Spain under King Juan Carlos.

Greece here is restored as a monarchy. And in reaction to the harsh soviet Repression of dissent and religion, a large political backlash occurs where monarchism experiences a revival in Eastern Europe/the Balkans. In Romania the deposed King Michael returns to massive crowds. In a popular uprising against the tyrant Ceausescu and his regime, a new monarchist government is put in place with large swathes of ordinary citizens and rank-and-file soldiers defecting to him where in a self-coup he reassumes his Crown. Thanks to his own personal popularity, the monarchy in Romania emerges much like its Greek contemporary in a more executive fashion rather than the King serving as a figurehead in a ceremonial capacity. Here in this tl Molodovia is annexed into the Kingdom while Transnistria is ceded to Ukraine. And within Transylvania the new government grants autonomy to the Hungarian minority areas to foster greater relations with the new Hungarian and later Habsburg government.

Thanks to the hardliner coup and attempted intervention in Hungary by the Soviet Union prior to its civil war and ultimate collapse, the Hungarians view the Habsburg with more nostalgia and romanticism with the monarchy becoming popular again. And following its independence, King Otto is reinstated as its King in a popular referendum with the backing of other European monarchies and the papacy. A similar referendum is held within Austria which also passes with the Austria-Hungary restored albeit in a very much reduced capacity with a different framework. Thanks to the chaos of the collapse of yugoslavia, the Slovenes look to ally with the Hungarians and Austrians and offer the Crown to the Habsburgs. Here the Empire is recreated as a triple monarchy though its a federated Commonwealth of nations each with their own independent governments with a common military and economic arrangements united under the Habsburg dynasty. Though the monarchy here is more Parlimentary with the Habsburgs serving in a similar capacity much like the House of Windsor in the UK. The formal name of the triple monarchy is the Imperial Habsburg Commonwealth of the Empire of Austria, Kingdom of Hungary, and Kingdom of Slovenia. Though unofficially/colloquially its also called the Danubian Monarchy/Federation

Within Bulgaria Tsar Simeon is elected in a massive lanslide as Prince-President where he goes on to restore the monarchy.

After the violent collapse of Yugoslavia, the new Serbian Government mostly discredited seeking to create a fresh start for its nation holds a referendum on whether to restore the monarchy which passes. A similar result occurs in Montenegro and Albania.

In ttl Greece, Bulgaria, and Romania are major economic powers known as the Balkan Tigers as a result of their massive economic growth with the three forming major economic ties with each other. Though unlike in otl, these nations don't join the EEC and prefer to have their own individual economic policies. Unlike in otl, the EEC never really becomes the EU, and this avoids things like the Greek economic collapse of the later 2000's.

What do you guys think of this map and timeline?

bold emphasis mine

Interesting scenario, but I think you intended it as Hungary not Poland :)
Yeah. Whoops! My bad! I fixed it though but thanks for catching it!

What happened with Croatia and Bosnia?
Austria and Hungary invaded to help the Slovenes and protect the Hungarian minorities in Voivodina. They also use the pretext of the conflict spilling into their borders as a pretext for war. Though Hungary was preventing from regaining any lost lands from Trianon because of international pressure.
