A Stand Still Stay Silent fanmap.
90 years after the "Rash", a sickness afflicting both the body and souls of its victims (affecting all mammal species with the exceptions of felines), turning them into hideous monstrosities and restless spirits simultaneously, humanity has been decimated and, much as with the Scandinavians in the original webcomic, as far as the denizens of Patagonia know, they are the last humans on Earth. With the confirmation of the existence of the supernatural, and the likely death of most everyone they knew, mankind struggled to survive, and 90 years after the collapse of the old world, six nations stand.
The Falkland Islands: The hardy Kelper people was almost unscathed by the collapse of civilization, through reliance in their sheep pastures, local fishing (avoiding the dreaded Leviathans, infected whale-beasts) and the remnants of the Royal Navy sinking any and all refugees trying to reach the islands for 50 years before finally opening their borders, with certain restrictions.
The collapse of the world they knew radically shifted the Kelpers' worldview. Anglicanism being gradually abandoned as the realization dawned on them that England likely no longer existed. Irreligion was also swiftly done away with as people started being born with magical abilities, be it to help with agriculture, heal the sick and injured or fend off the monstruous "trolls", infected human bodies turned into mindless beasts, the Kelpers slowly started reverting to the faith of their earlier ancestors; of Amaethon and Bendigeidfran, of nature spirits that were proven very real: the old Celtic faith of their Welsh and Scottish ancestors.
With the reopening of borders in the year 50, Spanish and the old Christian faiths became a considerable minority on the islands, as tensions between the Kelpers and their former Argentine enemies eased, not so much out of the kindness of their hearts, perhaps, but because of the existence of a much, much bigger threat.
Stanley today boasts a population of 3000 people, more than the two islands had before the Rash, and the islands are considered the safest place in the world, due to never having any contact with the trolls. That however also means that the Kelpers have the lowest immunity rate in the known world.
Y Wladfa: The old Welsh Colony that was the pride of the Chubut province is now a long-suffering, exiled nation walled off in the Valdez Peninsula, where the few survivors from the once bustling cities of Trelew, Puerto Madryn, Rawson and others fled. A wall between the safe and the militarized zones are all that keep the Wladfans alive, alongside a beefy, if rather paranoid, military and navy, which although small is very experienced due to the large population of Leviathans in the surrounding seas.
The Wladfans are a rather somber folk. After the loss of their old homeland and their exile to a rather barren peninsula, sustained mostly by trade and fishing. The population is divided between irreligious and druidist communities, and the mage academies in Puerto Piramides are prestigious even in Stanley. This, however, doesn't do much to shake off the feeling of dread in the older Wladfan generation, still reeling from the loss of their home and the catastrophic loss that was the Rawson Expedition, an attempt to reclaim the old capital of Chubut, costing the Wladfans 603 souls. However, the younger generation does not seem to share the older folk's pessimism, and as the successful founding and holding of the military settlements of New Rawson and New Trelew may show, there still is hope for the last Welshmen.
Argentina: When the Old World collapsed, some lost their faiths altogether, some looked back to the faith of their distant ancestors for answers.
And then there were the Argentines.
As the Tierra del Fuego province lost contact with Buenos Aires, as ferries between the great island and the province of Santa Cruz arrived at the island with refugees alredy infected with the blasphemous disease, and as all hope for the nation seemed lost, a man rose amongst the chaos.
Some say Father Hector Blanco wasn't even a priest, but a failed medicine student-turned Catholic zealot. Either way, his preaching resonated with a desperate people. Hector claimed that the chaos unfolding was no reason to leave the faith, as it was in fact the prophezised Chastisement that would come before the reign of the Antichrist. That it was a time where believer and heathen alike would suffer on the hands of demons, as allowed by God in order for His people to prove themselves worthy of salvation. And what should God's people do to prove their worth?
Cleanse the demons with fire.
Religious fanaticism aside, the controlled burn technique proved a very effective way of disposing of large numbers of trolls and infected animals, and clearing large areas of possible infected tissue. The newly burnt areas were allowed to regrow and resettle, and by the 30th year after the Rash, the entirety of Tierra del Fuego, including the Chilean-owned half, were considered cleansed.
For all the insanity some may attribute to Father Blanco, it must be remarked that he openly opposed any sort of violence against other human beings, as Catholic teaching held forced conversions were invalid, much to the relief of the non-Catholic inhabitants of Tierra del Fuego. However, proselytism was still very much encouraged, and Argentine nationals abroad are sometimes stereotyped in a manner similar to the Mormons or Jehova's Witnesses of the Old World.
Blanco never obtained any actual office within the Catholic Church, dying at the 10th year after the Rash, but his status as a martyr and a folk saint kept encouraging conversions accross Argentine-held territory. Even today, the Bishop of Rio Gallegos holds almost as much power as the Argentine president.
Blanco's controlled burn tactics continued being used throught Argentine territory, and it allowed the rebirthing nation to occupy territory as far north as Camarones in Chubut and as far east as Helsingfors near the Andes.
Magic isn't unheard of in Argentina, though despite its much larger population, is rather less common than in her Celtic neighbors. With the exception of the Tehuelche Machis, Argentine mages are educated in religious academies, and although not required to take vows or join the priesthood, are usually given the titles of chaplains for specific communities or military units. Though they would never admit it, the Argentine magic is similar to the Celtic one in its applications and uses, recieving help from saints and all sorts of angels instead of gods and nature spirits, but in application, Christian sigils made to fertilize the ground, start fires or hide one's presence from trolls are as effective as Celtic or Mapuche ones.
Chile: The Chilean government relocated to Punta Arenas as soon as the Rash began ravaging cities of neighboring countries. It was a terrible mistake.
The few that survived the massacre at Punta Arenas scatterd through the hundreds of uninhabited or almost uninhabited islands in the Chilean South, with a military government being set up on the hamlet of Puerto Edén and gradually reestablishing control of the scatterd Chilean people on their far flung fjords, deep forests and freezing islands. Sometimes peacefully, sometimes not so much. "By reason or by force", as the Chilean coat of arms says, and so it was applied. This retaking of such far flung regions gave the Chilean people an expertise in setting up posts in remote locations, operating in rough terrain and, most importantly of all, hunting trolls. A warlike culture began developing around a hodgepodge of pseudo-Prussian militarism, Chilean nationalism and a burning desire for revenge on the monsters that ravaged the world, and the new leading figures of the Chilean military soon started displaying trophies of hunted trolls as marks of honor.
A strong maritime culture also developed amongst the Chileans. Scattered in a myriad of islands, with a very mountainous and hard to transverse country, ships were the fastest method of transport, even with the presence of Leviathans, seal-beasts and other horrible things beneath the waves. With the advent (or return, perhaps) of magic and spirits into the world, the maritime Chileans started reverting to the old faith of the Yaghan and Kaweksar peoples, and practicing their old rites. Religiously, Chile is divided between said Canoer Cult, irreligion and Argentine Catholicism.
Wallmapu: The Mapuche people had lived in those mountains and lakes long before the Rash arrived, long before the white man arrived. They sailed those lakes and its islands, hunted in those forests and climbed those mountains many times before the world fell apart.
And they were not going to stop now.
As the Rash enveloped Bariloche, many Mapuche communities banded together in the absence of the Argentine and Chilean governments disappeared. Retreating to the island of Llao Llao, Mascardi Lake and many other isolated locations in the thick forests and freezing lakes of the high Andes. Scattered but never disunited, the Mapuches became the best scouts in the known world. And their mages, or Machis, became known for their specially strong connection to the spiritual world, being able to guide lost souls to the afterlife with more ease than their southern counterparts. This comes at a cost, however, as it makes them suceptible to invasive spiritual entities to take over their minds and bodies.
Farming, hunting, communing with the spirits and trading with the Chileans have kept Wallmapu alive for now, but as the other nations expand, some say its time for the Mapuche people to once again rise up and take back their lands, not only from the trolls but from the Argentines and Chileans that would want them for themselves.
Alerces Coetiroedd: Saying the Wladfans are the last Welshmen might be a bit of a lie, as in fact, the atlantic cities of Y Wladfa weren't the only Welsh colonies in the new world.
Near the Andes once was the city of Trevelin. Bustling as prosperous, tourism enriched it and made it known to the nation as a whole.
When the Rash hit, that same tourism became Trevelin's bane.
It is not known how many people managed to escape Trevelin and into the safety of the Alerces National Park, but it's known that they were very few. Even today the inhabitants of Alerces don't number more than 300. It is not known either if the Trevelians were just lucky that most of the national park was a Tŷ Duw, a "safe zone" protected by local nature spirits, forbidding the trolls' entrance and allowing humans to enter it under certain conditions, or if they somehow made the Alerces woodlands to become a Tŷ Duw, but it's known that that might be the reason why they survived. The Alerceans became one with the woods, hunting any trolls that might come near, and mostly sticking to themselves. It is said all of them are immune to the Rash, it is said all of them are mages, but none of this is known for certain. Their relationship with the outside world is erratic at best. Sometimes they'll trade with outsiders, sometimes they'll shoot them on sight near their forest. It is said that they thaught the rest of the nations how to train cats, using the felines' natural ability to sense lost souls and trolls from far away to their advantage. It is said that they have domesticated pumas. Once again, if any of these theories are true, only the Alerceans know. And that is knowledge they are not willing to share.
