The Roman town of Muro Orientem in 274 AD:

And the town, now called Blackborough, in 2017:

Glad to have participated, even if only for a few months. I think I can still see the old witches house I set up in the woods near Meridin.

If I can suggest one, you could try France ISOT'd with the dead of either WW1 or WW2. I could see that being fairly interesting!
What if someone did an ISOT of everyone who died during WWII?
ISOT of all Holocaust and Armenian genocide victims?

We were the Dead. Short days ago
We died, felt death, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we live
In Flanders fields.

France was in for quite a shock, not only were they transported to a virgin earth, but every. Single. Soul. who died during WWI, WWII, the Holocaust, and the Armenian Genocide had returned to life.

The confused men and women who thought they'd breathed their last gasped back to life. French, German, Ottoman, Armenian, Japanese, Chinese, Nazi, Jew, Gypsy, all alive again. Much confusion, no guns, just all of them found themselves in a field in France. When the French Government heard about this, they made began to build a city far out from the French border. The argument was "They won't understand our technology or society, so we will give them their own nation where we can slowly update them over time."
Two major nations were set up, the Unified State, and the Democratic State of Free People. Over the course of time, the Unified State was divided into the Free State of Israel and the Free Union of People. The DSFP is a actually a penal colony the French Government set up to put all those who support the fascist Nazi, Japanese, or Italian regimes or their ideals. It is the least democratic state with a French General as the head of state, no one is allowed to leave. The Free Union of People is at a roughly 1961 level of tech, while the French state is at a 1990s level tech. The FUP is slowly upgrading socially as well, roughly at a 1950s level. The French Government as said that once they catch up to the French state, they can request a referendum on whether they want to be annexed or continue to remain independent. Now while the FUP does have elections, their streets are also partoled by French police who prevent uptime crimes in the multicultural city of Ville d'Ys so it's debatable on how free it really is.
Nation+those who died in a war against them
North Korea and those dead in the Korean War
Vietnam and those dead in the Vietnam War

This is a map where my nation from Nationstates. Erutenia (https://www.nationstates.net/nation=erutenia), is ISOTed to the year 1914.

The Central powers (the Ottoman Empire goes neutral) and a few members of the Allies goes in the war against the Federation of Erutenia almost immediately after the ISOT, Erutenia supports the independence of Yugoslavia and Persia in the middle of the war. The "Great Erutenian War" ends in the 1916 with the victory of Erutenia and his Yugoslavian and Persians allies thanks to the Erutenian superior tech and industrial might.

After the war, Erutenia gains the German African Colonies, Germany goes communist and China is starting to become a power in East Asia, the US is isolated from the world politics.

In comparison, here is a map of Erutenia before being ISOTed: http://i.imgur.com/5tlYlfo.png

Any questions?

Since you are including everyone killed in the Holocaust, you are going to get three to four million Catholic Poles, plus the many others killed throughout WWII. I imagine they would try to get back to Poland in short order. Also, I adore how France has left Ulster alone. They must be feeling nostalgic for their old English enemies and want to set up a homeland for them there.their should be at least a million British, Irismen, Canadians, Americans, Australians, etc who could have been put their.

Plus about 3-10 million Asians now a long way from home.

There's also probably a lot of reds in the mix, though I imagine their presence can be explained as assimilating into France and Israel and establishing parties.

working on a map of a world where the Romans allow for the survival of the Ostrogothic Kingdom north of the Po river, which prevents the Lombard invasion from happening, but the Sassanians do successfully capture Constantinople and the Frankish kings later swallow up Roman Italy and North Africa and the Roman state in Greece was conquered by the Bulgars. The Bulgarian Emperor considers himself the Roman Emperor in the East and the Frankish Emperor consider's himself Roman Emperor in the West. Neither are particularly fond of the other. The Bulgars are determined to get back Constantinople and have already made inroads into Asia Minor to try and cut the Sassanians off from the Bosphorus. Kiev is Zoroastrian, but Holmgard is Catholic. Don't know what to do with Asia, Africa, or the rest of the Americas. Part of me wanted to have a heavily divided China, but I'm already doing that in my survival of the WRE map series and it's kind of an overused meme at this point to have a united Europe and a divided China.

The colors did something really weird, I'm not sure why. They kind of changed- for example, the longer I worked on this the more similar all the reds and pinks got. You should still be able to tell what is what, though.

Here's my same scenario from before, though a bit later and on the basemap you gave me. The map is in 1935 AD. World War One ended with the Treaty of Vienna, 1919. The Entente Powers of Imperial Russia, the French Republic, and Serbia surrender to the Allied Powers of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. [The following are the stipulations of the Treaty of Vienna] Elements of Poland and the Baltic coast were incorporated into Germany, while parts of the Ukraine were annexed by Austria. Serbia ceased to exist as an independent state and became part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Tunisia and Algeria became Italian colonies, and Southern France along the Mediterranean was annexed as a part of Italy. France was reduced to only her West African colonies.

The world now is on the edge of yet another war. France is controlled by a highly authoritarian regime, bent on revenge against Germany and Italy. Russia is still ruled by the Czar, though the Duma is a little more powerful than before the war. Britain is increasingly fearful of the German navy, and the growing German colonial empire has pushed Britain closer to France and Russia. The United States has only emphasized her neutrality policy, and is on good terms with the Germanosphere and the Anglosphere. Germany and Austria (now the Danubian Federation, more democratic and less ethnic tension- a lot less) are strong allies, as ever, hoping to avoid another European war. Italy is nearing collapse, as a lack of industry coupled with colonial revolts and pro-French revolts in the south of France have paralyzed the government. The stage is being set for a second war, as French troops gather on the Belgian and German borders, and British fleets worldwide prepare to shut out the Germans. China, industrializing thanks to German, British, and American investment, looks hungrily at Japan and Japanese Korea. The final cogs fall into place on April 12th, 1935, when China, Britain, and France signed the Steel Accords in Paris and June 1st, 1935, when a bombing in Rome led to the collapse of the country. France and Britain rushed in for territory, and the old Allies reluctantly pushed back. The Second World War had begun.

Back when I used Seashell (OSX's built-in paint application) it would sometimes do that with maps. Every time I saved a picture, the colors would mutate slightly and I'd have no idea why. I suspect it was some way for it to cut down on file size. If you use GIMP and make sure that your mode is set to RGB, it shouldn't happen.

What's with Mexico? Looks like a socialist state, with a U.S. intervention in Baja. Also not sure if Italy would take so much of France. More likely it'd just be taking Savoy and Nice, and then establish a DMZ. How did the Russian Revolution(s) get prevented?

As interesting as this was, one of the goals for the Hungarian part of Austro-Hungary was to prevent the annexation of Serbia. They did not want it at all and made it's exclusion from the empire paramount to their agreeing to the war against it IOTL

The Poles are attempting to get back to Poland, but it's slow going since the French Government is kind of limiting the expansion of the downtimers. They all live in the Free Union of People along with most other minorities, a few lucky ones have been allowed to enter France itself, but they are few and far between.
Northern Ireland is proper French clay! Viva la France! (jk jk) Most English speaking peoples do live on the British Isles, the rest live in the FUP. The debate among the French Government at the moment is whether or not they should just allow free movement of the downtimers to other parts of the republic. The anti-integration group is currently leading. Some still make it to "England" either for educational reasons (The province of the English has the largest English Speaking University in the World) or for the simple fact that some have been "re-educated" enough to be allowed access to the rest of France. The British Isles will most likely be given eventual autonomy and possibly independence.
Plus about 3-10 million Asians now a long way from home.
Yeah, a minority of them live on, what the uptimer locals call, Prison Island on Ireland (The Democratic State of Free People is the proper name). The rest live in "Ethnic Provinces" in the FUP, even though they make up a majority of the population. Most of the FUP is divided in this manner, with the Poles having a province in the far east of the state, the Chinese and Japanese are closer to France proper, Armenians live in France Proper, but in a province that behaves identically to the FUP in Central Italy, Germans live around where Berlin used to be, and so on and so forth.
There's also probably a lot of reds in the mix, though I imagine their presence can be explained as assimilating into France and Israel and establishing parties.
The reds are spread across the states. A tiny amount of them live on Prison Island, most live in the FUP, some live in Israel, and a small amount live in France proper. Communism and Socialism aren't nearly as discriminated against as they were during the World Wars or Cold War. Granted they still are in the minority, but they have gain at least one seat in every elective parliament.

Overall, a lot in this world kinda sucks, but it is better than it might have been. And it's a scenario that I would not mind expanding into a larger world.

So I've moved for uni, and I may not have wifi at my new home for six odd weeks. The silver lining is that at the moment, in the time before classes actually commence, I've had plenty of time to make maps and experiment; the bad news is I can't look up relevant information while doing so, so my current maps have mostly been born from what I can recall off the top of my head. The side effect of that is that I can't think of any good PODs to play around with, and so I've not been able to throw together any good alt-history maps as of yet. (Though that too will likely be dealt with as I'm using the uni library, which is open 24/7 and gives me access to over 4 million books, papers and reports on colonialism alone, for example) So I've been making a lot of alternate worlds, and here's one; Ibeji, though the full map -politics, religion, ethnicity- is a long way off.

Ibeji - The Third Earth - Copy.png

Ibeji is often nicknamed the Third Earth -the 'Second Earth' being Venus- due to it's material prosperity and cultural consequence, and much of this comes down to it's bountiful climate. The more exotic climates are described below.

Bluegrass - Malleable earth intermittently covered in shallow water and compact grasses, when properly cultivated it can support both megastructures and heavy shipping and has lead to the emergence of many a partially submerged city-complexes the likes of which Venice would be envious.

Goldgrass - Wet, fertile grasslands perforated with the same subterranean waterways that make Bluegrass possible, perfect for rice, lettuce and other water-intensive crops.

Grasslands - The most basic and endemic biome to Ibeji and most eminent in interstellar media.

Swampcrest - The salty cousin to Bluegrass, not nearly as infrastructurally stable but twice as productive with regards to aquaculture.

Steamcrest - A dense, humid pocket of jungle caught at the confluence of two oceans and four rivers, the Steamcrest is most remarkable for the billowing steam that clouds it's treetops.

Drywake - Often rocky, craggy and dry, but more comparable to the Australian Outback than the Sahara.

Truly is a fantastic one as well, though Munroifiying makes everything better, if only because you always want extra morsel from scenarios like this. Heck, looking over the map agai I just realized how the Austrians stuck Silesia and the Archuchy of Austria to Bohemia and Moravia to dilute the Czechs. Or so I assume. Also, just realized you linked to a thread with much of his work rather than the Map Thread #. Meaning I can see some good ISOT maps without too much searching.

Mexico looks really red because of some color distortion that occurred; they're not actually red. They should be their usual color. I wanted to be generous with Italy here, considering they received virtually nothing OTL. Also, I felt that they would want to expand their dominance in the Mediterranean by reducing the French Med. coastline to virtually nothing. Though the DMZ thing would probably be more probable, I may incorporate that in place of annexation of the whole dang thing. The Russian revolutions were prevented two ways: Lenin and his supporters ended up being conscripted into the Russian Army and died on the front, ending possibility of the Communist revolution. There was no democratic revolution or overthrow of the Czar because of the Allied (Triple Alliance) victory in the war. This strengthened the idea that monarchy was still a viable form of government, and though Germany and Austria were enemies of Russia, they wanted to avoid any spread of democracy into Europe further (rather like the decisions made at the Congress of Vienna post-Napoleon). As such, they propped up the Czar in the hopes of avoiding having a democracy to the East.

I'm using Seashell, so I suppose it's not an isolated issue then. I'll look into GIMP, thank you.
