I'm afraid I don't understand. He put a notes thing because people asked where they could see the larger version and the answer is Patreon. Are we not allowed to link to Patreon in any way in the map thread? Are we even allowed to talk about it?
I'm fairly sure the issue here is that the map posted here is too small to be read by anyone, and functions, in effect, as a sort of teaser. In order to see what is being advertised you must pay, and the whole process is not permitted to be advertised here. If the map was big enough to read and there was simply a link saying "Donations accepted" on his deviantart, I don't think there would be an issue.

@B_Munro I imagine since you are only charging people to have a map made, not to see it, you are in the green.

Not an Australia write-up but here's the new (and hopefully permanent) US state map. (Cross-posted from my Revolution! TL)

You can find a higher quality version on my DeviantArt, here: http://dutchmansmaps.deviantart.com/art/DIGI-The-Netherlands-in-1648-Full-690598659

I finally finished my first map.

This is a digital remake of a traditional map, originally made by the Cambridge University. The map is, quite obviously, about the Netherlands after the 80 Years' War had ended.
This is the version with all cities originally displayed on the traditional map, complete with some old English spelling. If you want a calmer map that only shows the capitals, then check out my DeviantArt profile page here: http://dutchmansmaps.deviantart.com/

I'm not quite happy with the end result. When I started making this map, it wasn't supposed to turn out like a modern digital political map. I wanted for it to have a more old-timey feel to it. Whatever I did, I could not make it work in Illustrator CC. I might try some more, see if I can make it work. But for now, I figured I had a perfectly fine map on my hands. That is why I am still uploading it, even though I am not happy with the end result. I suppose you could say that it is a good effort for my first map.

If you want to read more about the 80 Years' War, you can start out by reading the Wikipedia page here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eighty_Years'_War

I toughed it was a alternate history map you made, until i read what you said, nice work.

I've stretched the statement a little what with the flood of excellent first-time cartographers entering this thread, but hey; that's better than a lot of the work established cartographers throw in, myself included. Especially with regards to those sexy latitudes and measurements.

And I don't know what you mean, it's got a very lovely aesthetic to it. Like those 80's textbooks you might pull off of a uni library shelf and flick through brainedly; exceptionally detailed, yet a little bit quaint. Good job.
Thank you very much for the compliment. Sorry if I sounded condescending/woe-is-me/patronising. It was absolutely not meant that way. I understand most people here won't be able to create a map like that. You'll get far with Paint (or equivalent) and the bucket tool, but not as far as I did. That is totally fine. But I am a design student. I know Illustrator. I shouldn't have any trouble making a map look more old-timey. That is what frustrates me. So I pivoted and made it a modern political map. So, again, sorry if I came off as condescending or patronising.

To be honest, I think I spent the most time choosing what colour the countries should have been. I knew UP should be orange, SN should be green and LI should be purple/indigo. That's what the map had originally chosen, and I wanted to stay faithful to those choices. But man, those were some shit choices. The green and purple/indigo clashed really hard sometimes. To the point that it actually hurt my eyes. I had to mute those colours. But then I was stuck with a "bright" orange UP, which looked ridiculous combined with the muted green and purple. Thus, I muted the orange colour too. But muting the blue colour of the sea and rivers was almost impossible. There isn't really a muted blue colour. Kind of like how there is not a muted white colour, it just turns grey. In the end, I think I managed. Writing this out, I fully understand now how you would get an 80s vibe from it. Thank you!

No, no, you didn't sound that way at all. I know the feeling though, it's easy to look at your confidence fueled posts in retrospect and think 'god I sound like an arse' but I'm pretty sure no one else actually reads it that way. (Oh, I should clarify that I myself am a little more advanced than paint, in fact I have a map only a little bit above yours, aha :coldsweat:.) Naw, everyone gets stumped on certain issues. For example, when I first started using Inkscape I couldn't get the fill of different countries to work for the life of me and I nearly gave up on it entirely before a cup of tea and some methodical experimentation got me back on track. I wouldn't beat yourself up about it.

Well if there's one thing that defined the 80s it was garish colours so I don't think that would've been an issue, though I think I prefer the sort of textbook appeal as opposed to some horrible, hippie new age nonsense. You've actually stumbled onto the age old dispute as to what's the best colour scheme. They've had wars about that ;). But I digress, yeah, that's a real problem. I've gotten into the habit of using dull shades for just about everything because otherwise my eyes burn for the rest of the day, but you've done quite well with the... interesting palette.

Pretty much correct.

The issue is advertising (spamming, if you will) within the actual post.

Ian has already ruled that putting a link to your work in your sig is okay, even if it is to a commercial site (like Amazon). Putting it into the actual post, however, crosses the line. Ian will need to make the final ruling, but for now that sort of in-post advert is not acceptable.

Nice map. Very interesting coincidence with *California, btw-I had thought of one that looked very similar to that one a couple of years ago(only problem is, I never actually had the chance to put it on paper.....).

That is one big Sudan. And how do the international zones work, exactly?

They're basically French protectorates. In theory, they're independent states run by an international committee, but the committee lacks the manpower to govern the territory they've been assigned , so the French (who created the committee in the partition treaty) stepped in to "act on their behalf".
