I can't help but think that you're procrastinating… ;-)

CYBERPUNK - RELATIVELY NON-DYSTOPIAN

(Bonus points if you can guess where the map colors/theme come from, hint: it's an album cover)

Here is my try at a Japanwank. The full backstory has some stuff that may be controversial, so I may include it later or something with another map relating to this. Recently, as in like two months ago, I tried out watching anime (because, as many know, it is kind of popular nowadays) and I began getting dragged into the world of weabooism. I also wanted to do this to try out a vaporwave-style map, with lots of cyberpunkism in it, and a world dominated by the internet. As you can see, there is a "Pacific Co-Prosperity Sphere" of Japan and former puppet states from this timelines WW2. The timeline has Germany making peace with the allies very soon, and Germany's desires to move with only Italy, and Japan growing isolationist to the world outside of the Pacific. America has a Civil War after some issues (Second Great Depression, worse first one as well, rising divisions), and Japan brings "stability". German and Soviet power grows to a point where war eventually breaks out over the Baltic, and the two massive powers move in and out of eachother's territory, bringing the war to a standstill of troops getting thrown at eachother. Neither side desires a ceasefire, and more and more manpower is wasted as the rest of the world watches and laughs. Soon enough, civil war breaks out in Germany, and the Soviet Union makes significant gains, albeit with even more significant losses. Death tolls in the war reach over 25,000,000 on both sides combined, and Great Britain leads an invasion of France to restore a republic in the German puppet, as Soviet tanks smash through the barricades of Danzig. Japan is bizarrely successful in the Pacific, and soon enough, the colonial possessions of France are seized, with rebel movements being promoted in British and Dutch colonies, and some other stuff. America eventually peaces out with Japan, and they create two seperate puppet states out of Cascadia and California, with agreements to let America keep Alaska, in exchange for granting leeway into their oil depositions. Japan outright annexes Hawaii and most American Pacific territories. The weak and overextended Soviet Union soon collapses under it's own weight, with Ukrainian nationalists and Siberian natives, both supported by Japan, rise up in rebellion, and Japan brings help to them. Soon, Finland invades the Soviets back, as a coup is attempted by Zhukov, which fails. He instead carves out a state of Stalingrad and the surrounding area proclaiming a new Soviet Union. Stalin has a heart attack and dies soon after. Soviet leadership fights over who can rule the country, as many believe that Malenkov is not capable of ruling. Germany falls to the invading Soviet armies, and Ernst Thallman is propped up in Berlin, creating the short-lived German Soviet Republic, founded off the Bavarian Soviet Republic. The Nazi regime flees to Czechia, and fortify the country and it's surroundings to "reconquer" their former territory at another time. Texas splits off from America in their final bit of insurrectionism before a republic is founded, where a Nuclear attack (the only nuclear attack in history" occurs by a rogue officer in Washington D.C., and General MacArthur and General Patton restore the democracy, in which the latter is elected president until is death four years later. The Soviet German War finally ends once Franco-British troops enter Berlin, and establish the "Republic of Prussia" in order to stop Germany from becoming powerful again. They are given the largely ethnically cleansed Poland, much to the dismay of Polish nationalists around the world. Mussolini is overthrown, and a republican monarchy is established in Rome. Spain stays fascist, however, and they annex Portugal.

Several years later, Russia finally stabilizes. Germany is made up of several states, all competing with eachother for trade, etc. especially the "Third Reich", which still considers itself at war with it's neighbors, up to this day. Fascists gained power in Greece later, and finally accomplished their goals in 2019 of "reforming Byzantium", and Istanbul is once again Constantinople. Decolonization occurred, and the (still existing) monarchy in Ethiopia survives to this day, now modernized, and is an example as an excellent African power. Unfortunately, South Africa never abolished Apartheid, and instead joined Greece's neofascist bloc, which finds itself hating it's neighbors and struggling to cope with the rest of the world, but at least the have elections! Just really, really limited ones. Former Nazi Germany is a joke internationally, basically acting like North Korea. Mexico is in a much better situation ITTL, and has a steadily increasing standard of living, along with her friendly Latin American rival of Brazil. Brazil, however, has the Integralists in power. Luckily, it is a much more moderate form of Integralism, and they have become a lot more socially modern, but still have somewhat friendly relations with Greece and South Africa. India got independence, and annexed it's surrounding nations, becoming a bloated empire. It seemed that the future was bright for India going into the 80s, until the long persecutions of the huge Muslim minority got out, and they soon rose up in rebellion, and have been gradually radicalizing to Taliban levels. France has drifted more and more towards Great Britain, and they eventually merged governments to a degree, with a single parliament, but seperate heads of state, etc. Prussia founded a European Union-style thing, which has grown surprisingly large and even got Greece and the Nazis in. Canada is having a civil war right now due to increased tensions over a bad economy, similar to Turkey. Finally, former Russia, or the remnants of it, democratized and eventually stabilized. Under Putin's leadership, the economy has improved, and Russia is praised as being a beacon of democracy and democratic socialism.

I hope you all enjoy the map! Any questions or constructive criticism is encouraged!

A little info-map I have made from a larger ASB map I am creating, where each region becomes a sort of analog for another.

Here, we see the flip between Eastern Europe and India/the Middle East.

(Top map: Representation with border undefined)

(Middle Maps: Danian claims, De Facto AH.com-style situation, Finnish claims)

(Bottom Maps: Situation during the early 20th Century; the administrative boundary (Blue) versus princely boundary (Red); Finland (light orange) and Boreonesian occupation (dark orange) versus Karelia (light blue) and The Free Stretch (green))

The Free Stretch is a peculiar sliver of land found on some maps on the border between Dania and Boreonesia.

In the early 20th Century, the United Kingdom controlled everything from the Oder to the Altai mountains, an extremely diverse region containing several hundred million people and millions of miles of land. As a result, the Dominion of Tatary, as it was called, was split into a complex arrangement of client princes of vary degrees of power and, above them, counties and provinces directly under the control of the Dominion government. Two particularly notable client states were the Kingdom of Finland and the Grand Duchy of Karelia. Long before, the two countries had a long history of conflict between them, but an uneasy truce fell when the region was subjugated by the United Kingdom. Both were on a fairly long leash compared to other regions of the empire, including maintaining their own militaries.

For local Dominion administrators, the arrangement had problems. The border region between the two kingdoms didn't follow the lines of land use and ethnic distribution; some Karelian-majority areas had been taken by Finland is a war a few years before both became part of Dominion, and some Finns lived inside northern Karelia. Not much could be done about it on the princely level, since the sanctity of the borders between the two states was enshrined in the treaties setting up the Dominion (and fear of outright revolt on the part of the Finns if the powers of the Finnish monarchy were curtailed, since the Finland would lose the important Karelian Isthmus). On the provincial level, though, the boundaries between the Province of Finland and the Province of Karelia (which had followed the princely boundaries until then) were changed, and both provinces gained and lost land. As decades past, the two provinces became more prominent in administering both kingdoms, complicating the situation further.

The problem came to a head when the dominion was dissolved and the Kingdom of Finland declared, in a unanimous decision by the Finnish Parliament, its intention to join Boreonesia, while the Kingdom of Karelia, after a dominion-wide independence referendeum, moved to join in the formation of Dania. The Finnish government demanded that the border follow the that between the kingdoms, since the representatives of the Karelian Isthmus in the Finnish parliament supported the motion to join Boreonesia, while the Karelian government demanded that the border be at that of the provinces, since the referendum was held at the provincial level and the Karelian Isthmus had voted to join Dania rather than join another nation. Further problems in the south, in the Kingdom of Kiev, lead to the Finnish-aligned forces taking over Vyborg as well as other towns, much to the chagrin of the Danians. Trying to cut their loses, the Danians allowed Boreonesia to take their claims, and pulled back all remaining forces in their claimed areas to push the fight in Kiev.

While the Boreonesians took their claims inside the Kingdom of Finland, they didn't occupy the region that was moved from the Kingdom of Karelia to the Province of Finland, since to do so would recognize Danian claims in the Karelian Isthmus. Dania, also, didn't occupy the region for the same reason - occupying it would recognize Boreonesian claims to the Karelian Isthmus. The unclaimed region is now known as the Free Stretch.

Even though neither side wants to claim the free stretch, several thousand people live and work within the territory. And with people comes the need governance. The people of the Free Stretch elect their own council and maintain their own police force, while companies working on either side of the border conduct business inside the Free Stretch. Most have Boreonesian Citizenship, but a small number of Danians also have moved in, and education is split between schools in both Dania and Karelia. In effect, the region is an independent country that's also a co-dominion of Boreonesia and Dania, though no one recognizes it as such. The region is relatively unpatrolled and guarded compared to the Karelian Isthmus, and many activists make it a point to use the Free Stretch as a symbol for bringing Boreonesia and Dania together.

I always found it weird that Houston is spelled with an "ou" and pronounced "yu". Shouldn't it be H-au-s-ton (house-ton) maybe I'm just going crazy from too much mapping...

No, because it's ultimately Franco-English in origin (language wise, not the guy it's named after) and in French 'ou' can be used for that sound; the English word house comes from the Old English word 'Hus' and is a Germanic word, meaning the spelling is pronounced differently, more akin to the German word 'Haus'.
