How did Scandinavia unify, and why does russia own Kola? It's basically empty.

I haven't made a map in a while.
Not sure how I feel about this one so far.
No backstory I care to elaborate on just yet. The broader brushstrokes are a radically different US policy overseas, allowing for some... things to happen in their absence with different folks at the helm of their various realms/projects.
Americas are going to be... fun. Mostly just wanted to post it to be posting it, I guess. Took some inspiration from a couple of things/ Mostly the Turkish-centered political block, from an old MotF; proper dues to be paid eventually... because it's not in front of me, WIP and all.
Aesthetically speaking, though, any comments?

Scandinavia is an artifact of the "hey wouldn't it be neat if. . ." mood I was in when I started the map, before I had really worked out the broad details of the backstory. I was never able to come up with a satisfactory justification for it, but left it in anyway because I wasn't sure what else to do with it. Anyway, I'll say for now that the union comes from a lapse in succession in Sweden-Norway in 1909, leading to a branch of the Danish royal house being proposed as a successor, and the resulting loose personal union slowly congealing into a proper political union over the next 50 years. The constituent realms still maintain a substantial degree of autonomy in matters such as language, however, and a few political parties in Parliament support dissolution of the union.

As far as Kola goes, that's where the city and oblast of Murmansk are, and Murmansk was a Russian bastion throughout the Revolution, so thus was kept at the Copenhagen Conference.

Hope that answered your questions.

Seems off that, if we assume things are like they are today, Flanders is the one pushing for independence that Walloonia and Brussels are the ones outside of the European organization, whichever form it takes here. And I expect things are going to get complicated for you in Southern Africa, in keeping all the differing shades of grey and black straight to symbolize the levels of autonomy, influence, etc the South African government possesses. I also have some trouble imagining Madrid controlling Gibraltar here if most of Granada is not in their hands, and I expect the Moroccans might look at those Melilla and Cueta with a pondering expression. Especially if they decided to cut their loses (such as form trade to now civil war torn Spain) and back up an Andalusian group.

I've put together a basic tutorial on how to use QGIS as I've been getting a lot questions lately for various fora as to how I make make my maps.

I need a couple of map makers who will look over my Google Docs file and make comments on it about steps that may be unclear, ones they think are missing, etc…

PM me and I'll send you the URL.

Truthfully, didn't know that about Flanders; must've had the two camps mixed up in my head. I was mostly playing around there, but good points.
Britain going down a darker road led to a few issues, a showdown over Gibraltar being one of them. Which, summarily, led to Spain's appetite causing much indigestion. I was pretty sure I'd change those enclaves, just hadn't yet.
South Africa. I do have too many colors. Looking at a Not-EU style thingy, so the colors will definitely be refined eventually.
Thanks for the input!

This is my first map, the product of a string of nights poking around with a worlda in GIMP after a long time spent lurking and admiring the work around here. This map started out not so much as a defined result of a given POD, but more as a collection of various map-related ideas I’ve had kicking around for a while that developed a backstory as I began to make it. As a result, it’s not super-rigorous or strictly plausible, and some of the borders will probably be irritatingly convergent, so don’t be afraid to savage the hell out of me for all the various newbie mistakes I’ve doubtless made. I started using the X2 color scheme, but chose to TOASTERize it partway through, in case you're wondering why Russia is that purple.
[/SPOILER]

Exactly my story (except for the X2 color scheme)!

Aesthetically, looks good, although I don't know about the Spanish colors: that bluish green? Is Andalucia Turkey-aligned? Russia seems to have handled the post-Soviet transition more successfully, Saudi Arabia I assume is in the middle of a civil war. Indo-Pakistan war, the Radioactive Death Zones seem a bit large in places for the sort of first-generation atomic weapons an India-Pakistan war would involve, and Red Britain with a post WWII POD really puzzles me - or does red not mean Red?
