The Sino-Soviet Nuclear War

I normally don't put maps on the Map Thread... But when I do, I have write-ups... :D

Consider this to be a remake of one of my older maps Nixon's Legacy, featuring an earlier America-goes-World-Police by virtue of a nuclear war between the USSR and PRC. Also inspired by some of rvbomally's maps. Also has a lot of 70's-punk elements via Left/Right political violence in Europe, an ongoing Sino-Soviet split, a US/Soutj Nam victory and some weird cult-y shit.

  • The PoD is the late 1960's where negotiations between Brezhnev and Mao break down to the point where embassies are closed and the USSR and PRC engage in various border skirmishes that nearly lead to war on multiple occasions.
  • The US under Nixon tries to find a way to take advantage of the conflicts by trying to broker a peace between the two states in an attempt to avoid a nuclear conflict. The US-brokered negotiations eventually fail as the ideological differences and mutual hatred put the Cold War on hold for a while as the two Communist juggernauts gear up for war.
  • The Americans also end up forcing a ceasefire in Vietnam while nobody was looking via mass bombing and a successful shutting down of the Ho Chi Mihn Trail.
  • The Yom Kippur War is a much more bloodier affair that leads to Israel roundly defeating a longer-lasting United Arab Republic. A follow-up war in the 80's led to Jerusalem saying "Fuck this" and throwing nukes around the Middle East until the Arab forces stopped coming. They're now nothing but a phariah state in the international community. But at least there's a Jewish state, so that's one good thing... Right?
  • The Sino-Soviet Nuclear war breaks out on the 9th of May 1985 as nuclear missiles fly over the borders of the USSR and the PRC, laying waste to both nations that eventually survive the turmoil with a massive loss of population centres and territory.
  • The Russian Federation emerges from the ashes of the conflict as an overly nationalistic republic under the Liberal-Democrats (the name is very misleading) while the USSR took what remained of it's nuclear-armed navy and buggered off into the frozen north where they've set up numerous buffer states in the south to keep everyone away from them. The Chinese also fractured and are limited to what remains of the heavily nuked north.
  • Student protests continue in Europe as France cracks down quite heavily on them while the Germans are forced out of NATO and the WEU after the Greens complained about it. Greece suffers another Civil War and is Communist with a rump Kingdom in the Agean and Cyprus. Italy underwent a bloodier Years of Lead that ended in a neo-Nazi coup with a North/South dichotomy between them and the French-backed Padanians in the north.
  • Poland is a major power in Eastern Europe and has since underwent a huge Catholic revival movement with Pope John Paul II spearheading it from Rio after the Papacy fled the Vatican.
  • The UK falls apart after an aborted Communist Revolution with Thatcher shutting down the mines that led to a huge uprising from within the Labour Party. The IRA assassinate the Queen and the Americans are still occupying England to this day. But don't worry, Westminster is around... Albeit as a puppet of Washington.
Well, at least My home country hasn't been fatally struck... But even worse, I'm probably living in THE Big Brother state (Guessing that they wouldn't give their capital away) OR in a city state that is either AnCap or Little BigBro

Yuck!

But are blacks in charge of the Delta? Because OTL that place was printing money for the planters in the late 19th/early 20th century. Bantustans deliberately didn't include the best land. The Delta would certainly qualify as "best land" if you're a planter.

Are there war scares/diplomatic issues when someone blows up a levee? Like if you're a planter on one side and want to screw your rival on the other side over, you send some guys to blow up a chunk of the levee during a flood to go destroy them while preventing your own destruction either by the flood or them doing the same to you? Internationalised Mississippi seems to open a whole can of worms.

Yes and no. A lot of policy areas are under the control of the federal government, including environmental issues, because Columbia doesn't want its minorities polluting the drinking water of the white population. Economically Georgia has been transitioning towards industry and services, though of course a bunch of farms and plantations still exist, including some in the Negro ARs (especially Yazoo due to its size and agricultural potential) which are still managed by whites.

Also regarding the Mississippi: just like with the big international rivers in Europe countries are responsible for their section of the river and the USA, the CRA, and Anáhuac (TTL's Mexico which also includes most of former French Louisiana) are relatively happy with the arrangement.

What's going on with that American flag?
Or keep the spacing of the red and white stripes constant?

The mapmaker was lazy and didn't really know how to use *Inkscape! Not me!

(Sorry, wolfram! I do like the map and particularly the writeup: am now curious about the rest of North America).

The OTL Mexican cession east of the Rio Grande and south of Kansas is Mexican, with a de facto autonomous region in San Francisco - formerly largely Anglo, but now largely niponés and josonés. Government-wise, Mexico is a rather strongly capitalist economic power. The U.S. retains a corridor in the OTL Northwest, plus British Columbia south of 54°40'.
Canada stretches from Nova Scotia to Lake Winnipeg. Newfoundland and Labrador is a separate unit in the Commonwealth. The Boreal Confederation including Alaska and most of the rest of Canada exists - formerly an Inuit-dominated state, it has become majority-white as a result of farming and the oil boom. Its main industry, though, is playing the British, Russians, and Americans against each other to receive foreign aid and military equipment.
The Caribbean is de facto an American lake, with "good neighbor" policy keeping the West Indian Federation and various independent nations in line. The United States of Central America formed as a counterweight to Mexican influence - it is dominated by its powerful labor unions, especially the Canal Workers' Union.

Big Brother state? o_O

Not sure as to one you're talking about... :p

GDR - The nation where even the employees of Stasi were double-checked in their service (I visited Hohenschönhausen Central Prison Camp a few weeks ago - I learned that the basic principle of the GDR was that everyone was an enemy - and so, the prison guards and interrogators were double-checked during their work with cameras and microphones so even they themselves were watched...)

Is Berlin still divided?

Ah! Both Germanies ITTL opened up communications and are on somewhat good terms since the Russian pulled out of the Eastern Bloc when the Sino-Soviet Nuclear War took place. The GDR has built up it's own 'Eastern culture' to show that they are indeed a different nation that just happens to share a similar language. Basically like OTL Austria. Berlin was taken over by a former Stasi Agent who eventually seized control of the American Pershing missiles that were stationed in West Berlin and threatened to nuke everyone around him if both powers didn't pull out. It kinda worked and they're essentially a slightly more successful Best Korea crossed with Singapore as they have a more manageable population since both East and West got a lot of Berliner refugees in the ensuing chaos. The DDR capital is Karl-Marx-Stadt as a result of them losing their half of the city.

Oh, Well, Then I'm living in an AnCom City State. Woo! /s

The Me of this TL (if it even would exist) would've probably moved to Austria.

By the way, Due to the Infrastructure I'd guess Dresden or Leipzig would be a better capital.

My submission for MotF 155:
polish-colony.jpg

In 1882, 87 years after Poland lost independence, Polish nobleman and Russian navy officer Stefan Szolc-Rogozinski organized an expedition to Cameroon. While it was officially an exploration, in actuality it was a search for a place that a Polish colony could be founded. In late 1882, accompanied by Leopold Janikowski, among several others, the expedition left France, flying French and Polish flags. It took several months to arrive in Cameroon, after which many treaties were signed with the local tribes, transferring land to Poland. A camp was built in what is now Janikowskigrod, and soon it was bolstered by follow up expeditions. During the Berlin Conference, the Poles were supported by Britain and France, in order to weaken the German claim on Cameroon. While not completely successful, Poland left the conference with a significant chunk of territory, much to the displeasure of the Germans and Russians. Within a few years following the colony's establishment, a steady stream of Poles, as well as some Jews, were settling in the colony in order to escape persecution in Poland, which was under Russian and German control. In 1891 the Polish Republic was officially declared in the capital of Janikowskigrod, and was recognized by most countries except Russia and Germany.
In the 1910 Census, 77.6% of the population was recorded as African, 20.1% Polish, and 2.3% Jewish. The coastal areas around Janikowskigrod, as well as Rogozinskigrod, were reported to be majority Polish, and the destination of most immigrants. The continued success of the republic, as well as the migration of Poles to the colony, continues to be a thorn in the sides of Russia and Germany, however, the Polish Republic appears to be here to stay.

I like this Poland-in-exile idea. Haven't seen anything quite like this.

It's interesting, that in OTL Poland also made some efforts to become a colonial power. The Maritime and Colonial League (Liga Morska i Kolonialna) tried negotiating with Liberia and Portugal, as well as sending several expeditions to the Central Africa and Angola. There even was a plan to expel all the Polish Jews and send them onto Madagaskar! (Un)fortunately, as the WWII had started, all that became irrelevant.

Yes, it is a truly fascinating piece of history. I read a bit about some of Poland's other attempts while researching the map's background.

Don't forget Czechoslovak Togo!

Here's something related to a Darkest Hour mod I'm currently working on with a few friends. The mod posits a world in 1936 that has not been marred by a Great War - yet. This is what the world typically looks like after about six months of gameplay - France has descended into civil war between the Republic led by Joseph Paul-Boncour, the monarchists led by Charles Maurras, the communists led by Maurice Thorez and Jacques Doriot... and the neutral state of Brittany, led by Morvan Marchal. Many other powers (even the tiny Liberia!) have seized French colonies and the Ho Chi Minh-led Indochina is probably gone for good, having won their brief war of independence against the French.

I do have the complete history of this, but I don't think it belongs on this thread.

Gotta say I like the way a decentralized Austria-Hungary looks on a map.

Base Idea: The Occupation of Germany is divided into multiple nations after the Second World War. "West Germany" is similar to our own, made from the British Occupation Zone. "Bavaria" is made from the American Occupation Zone. "The Rhine" is made from the French Occupation Zone, and "East Germany" is made from the Soviet Occupation Zone. Austria is divided into east and west, with East Austria being united with Hungary and Czechoslovakia into the Socialist Danubian Confederation. This would last for 50 years until the nations found themselves in an alternate world.

Crimea is from OTL.

Iran is from the time of the Second World War when the Allies occupied Iran. At the time of The Event, Iran was divided and controlled by both Soviets and Anglo-American forces.

Korea is controlled by the People's Republic of Korea ruled by Yo Un-hyung. It finds that it's the sole leader of Korea and the Americans and Soviets no longer able to control them, a United Korea Peninsula is finally achieved.

Present day -

Europe -
  • The Federal German Republic ("West Germany") is the major European Power. There have been talks with both the Republic of the Rhine, a very French influenced state, and the State of Bavaria.
  • Britain is home of the American and British refugees from around the world. The Unified State of England and America is going to eventually split once travel to the former US is easily accessed.
  • The tail wags the dog and now France is more of a puppet to the Republic of the Rhine than the other way around.
  • Austria hoped to unify with their other half, but that won't happen as long as grand leader Brunó Ferenc Straub is in control of the Socialist Danubian Confederation.
  • Speaking of, the SDC is starting to rip at the seams. All member states are starting to argue for independence. Some say that it won't last for another five years.
Asia -
  • Soviet controlled Iran was taken over by Soviet Generals and soldiers and the refounding of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. It's divided between Crimea SSR, Caucasus SSR, Kuristan SSR, Iran SSR, and the Khorasan SSR. There are hopes that they will now be able to unify the world under their rule.
  • The Shah rules the Imperial State of Iran in the south, supported by Western European Forces along with American and British generals and soldiers there to help train and protect against the communist threat.
  • While the People's Republic of Korea is a vaguely communist state, there is some democracy in the nation. The leader is elected as is the legislature. Political parties are made up of left wing to center-right political parties. Corruption is a problem, but things are better than before the civil war.
  • The Korean Civil War was the result of a rebellious Pyongyang led by one Kim II Sung. The war resulted in a ceasefire, but make no mistake: The Democratic Republic of Great Korea is a threat and will be eliminated as soon as possible.

('nother) WIP for the 1878 map for the World of Nightrise TL. (POD 1852)
As for current, the POI and the Nation/Faction infoboxes are missing.

The Viennese treaties have cleared the situation in most of Europe, North and South America plus the Special Participant, the Japanese Youkai Empire, as for the rest there's two major words that basically describe everything political at that timespot:

"holy clusterfck" (or better, "unholy clusterfck"?)

Beautiful map. Any reason Switzerland is independent? I think the borders would look much cleaner if it was partitioned between Germany and Sardinia-Piedmont.
