Liberia, a Penal Colony

The premise of this map is what if Liberia instead of being a colony in which to settle freedmen was actually a penal colony and a dumping ground for undesirables?

The PoD is approximately between 1815 and 1820, the American Colonization Society received more attention from the government and the idea of using the hypothetical Liberia as a penal colony was raised. Spain managed to maintain New Spain and in 1838 it declared war on the United States over Texas. The United States wins but its victory is much less significant than in OTL, annexing only Texas (called Tejas in TTL), Florida and Cuba. The American Civil War was much more brutal than in OTL, the Democratic Party was effectively destroyed and the United States de facto became a one-party democracy under the Patriot Party (TTL Republican Party). In 1901, the Reverend Diogenes Maxumczyk (recently elected president) dissolved the congress and proclaimed a Theocracy. The Theocracy quickly collapsed ironically in large part thanks to Southern resistance groups. After that, an attempt was made to revive the United States, but President-designate Wellington Wilson was an extremely incompetent man who could not handle either the economic crisis or social problems. In 1930, a Redistributionist (TTL Communism) Revolution occurred that took over the country.

While all of this was taking place, the Territory of Liberia was constantly receiving new citizens, mostly people who could "contaminate" the ideal lifestyle of the current government, which predictably leads to many conflicts between settlers. In 1985, the American Workers Federation collapsed and Liberia finally became independent... and the resulting country is peculiar to say the least.

Liberia would definitely be far more populous than OTL, and possibly more prosperous. Possibly an African Australia, minus the genocide of the locals.

Tourism map of Kangokia, alternate history Hungary which was settled by Chinese instead of Magyars.

  • In Szansi (Budapest), the capital city whose name means "City on a Hill" is the birthplace of Kangokia and home to the impressive Imperial Palace.
Awesome, but you missed the opportunity to make Buda the center of Buddhism in the country.

A Tale of Three Frances

Jbm1Ojl.png

The POD involves Henry V living a little longer after the Treaty of Troyes, and as a result he's able to push forward more into Southern France to subjugate more of the remaining Valois resistance to his rule in Southern France. Henry V takes much of the old duchy of Aquitaine. Henry V dies as a result of injuries sustained from battle, but as a result of the butterflies, Henry VI is born more sane and healthy. Henry V manages to live long enough to be formally crowned giving more legitimacy to his son Henry VI who proves to be an effective ruler managing to consolidate his rule in France proper. The Valois Claimants manage to get some of the Southern Provencal nobles to rally around himself establishing his foothold in Toulouse. Thus France is split into two Kingdoms each claiming to be the rightful Kings of France. But internationally, the new Lancastrian Kings were recognized as the Legitimate Kings of France holding Paris.

In the Duchy of Burgundy under the shrewd Philippe III "the Good" and Charles I "The Bold" Burgundy uses the resulting power vaccum within France and the HRE proper to expand into the Low Countries and Rhineland realizing the borders of the old Carolingian Kingdom of Lotharingia. Lotharingia emerges as a new Great Power in Europe with control of the Rhineland and the Wealthy Low Countries. This wealth and trade dominance allows for Charles the Bold to consolidate his hold by building a highly effective army and navy. Though the rise of the House of Burgundy led to the historic Plantagenet/Lancastrian-Bourgogne alliance to break down with the two dynasties becoming fierce rivals whose wars defined much of the 16th and 17th Centuries. The Burgundian Kingdom of Lotharingia is the Third claimant to the French title as a result of the Burgundian Kings descending from another branch of the Capetians. And following the death of the main branch of the Valois in Toulouse, a bitter war of succession broke out in Europe between the Lancasters and the Burgundians seeking to gain control over Southern France. Of course the Occitan and Provencal nobility, not wanting to be under either Kings' rule, rallied behind a claimant descended from an illegitimate branch of the Valois Kings who styled himself as being of the House of Toulouse. The new King Francois I de Toulouse managed to maintain the territorial integrity of his realm against both the Burgundians and Lancasters.

What do you guys think?

1. How did Navarre get so large?
It allied with the Burgundians who in later wars gave it subsidies and military support through which it expanded its lands. Navarre also played off Aragon and Castile in the "War of Castilian Succession" leveraging its position against both powers to gain victory. The victory of the Trastamaras led to Castile and Portugal forming closer relations while Navarre largely looked for protection against its neighbors. England which had allied with it at various points abandoned Navarre in favor of Castile and Portugal throwing Navarre into the awaiting arms of the Burgundians. Navarre is essentially the Prussia of ttl here with a series of highly competent kings fully mobilizing its resources to build an army with a state.

2. Did the Papacy give up Avignon to the HRE?
As a result of butterflies, the Protestant Reformation never really got off the ground and translated to various movements calling for Church Reform. The Burgundians also attaining the electorates of Trier, the Palatinate, and Cologne also managed to attain the Imperial Title later on and using its position to assert its power in the HRE. The massive power of Burgundy scared the other princes resulting in a series of Wars between the Emperor and his subordinate Princes. The Protestant Reformation never really got off the Ground as the Papacy sided largely with these other Princes fearing a resurgent HRE turning its gaze southward to Italy. As a result the long Holy Roman interregnum of the 15th Century led to Avignon being lost from the Papacy while the HRE was re-constituted under the Golden Bull of 1580 where the HRE recieved its new constitutional framework making it a power not seen in Europe since the Hohenstaufens of old under the rule Emperor Charles V "The Fearsome" (Charles VI of Lotharingia). The new regnal numbering goes back to the old Carolingian Kings with Charles the Bold crowning himself King Charles IV of Lotharingia.

Nice map!
Thanks man!

Founded after the Second World War, the Rhenish Republic would be one of nine states to be created following the surrender of Germany. Initially nothing more than a French puppet state, the Rhenish Republic would be the first state to be subjected to "degermanification" a process by which German as a nationality and identity would be systematically oppressed in favor of the building up more regional identities.

Such a process would see the total population identifying as German steadily decrease from 99 percent in 1946 to 23 percent by the time degermanifaction policies were rescinded in 1987. Nevertheless, the damage had been done, and to this day the Rhenish Republic remains one of three German speaking nations to not become a member of the German Economic League.

In recent years however, the number of people in the Republic identifying as German has seen a steady increase, currently standing at 35 percent, of which close to half of which also identify as Rhenish. Nevertheless, the Rhenish Republic remains much more closely aligned with the west than it does with the other German states, though relations as a whole have been steadily moving in a warmer direction, with talks of joining the German Economic League being talked about more and more among mainstream politicians.

Why Lotharingia and not Lorraine or Burgundy? I'm not aware that the local languages differentiated on Lotharingia/Lorraine and the English differentiation is more recent iirc.
The Kingdom of Lotharingia's name derives from the Carolingian King Lothaire. During the Carolingian Empire, it wasn't really a state defined by a single historic or ethnic identity. Thus the contemporary historiographers referred to it as the Kingdom of Lothaire referring to its first King who was the son of Emperor Lothaire I (or Lothairius in Latin). In French, the title name is Lotharingie, but I used Latin here for the title as a call-back to it being one of the original constituent Kingdoms of the Holy Roman Empire.

I know the meaning. It's just that the Duchies of Lotharingia ie Upper and Nether Lorraine have the same name in the contemporary languages (e.g. Lothringen in Standard German). Lotharingie like Lotharingia seems to be a more modern usage.

The First Swedish Invasion of Gotland

Gotland was initially leased from the King of Sweden by the Teutonic Order in 1289. The purpose of the lease was to aid the Teutonic Knights in Christianizing the Southern Baltics with Gotland serving as a geographically strategic and economic backbone.

The terms of the lease were murky, but it is generally agreed by historians that the Swedish king could demand the return of the Island after a 10 year period, which he did in 1303. The requests for the return of the island were never meet by the Teutons, and so the Swedish King launched an invasion.

Departing in 1304, a fleet of 1 700-2 000 soldiers set sail from Uppland. The Teutonic navy met them around 60 kilometres from Visby (1.). The battle ended with a decisive Swedish victory. After which they advanced unhindered to Visby, where they landed in May (2.). The ensuing siege would end with a costly victory to the Swedes, who were relying on a much greater co-operation from the native population for against the Teutons.

A fleet with reinforcements headed by the Grand Master of the Teutonic order himself were largely lost in a violent storm (3.), leaving the remaining garrison on Gotland short on men and supplies.

By late August, the Swedes quickly occupied a large section of north-western Gotland (4.).

The invasion would decisively be halted at the Battle of Buttle (5). Where a force of 1 100 Swedes lost 400 men to few Teutonic casualties. By the end of the year, the whole island would be under unquestioned Teutonic control.

Very good map! How did you make it, with which software and resource?
What does this Rhineland language look like?

NOTE: I've changed the orthography of the language a little since my last post.

This is so insane, yet so amazing.

Is Kangokia more Buddhist, Confucianism, Taoism, folk religon, or a mix? Or any Jewish/Christian faiths?

They Christianized the same time Hungary did OTL, but their buildings look Buddhist, they have Buddhist temples, and many people practice Christianity alongside folk religion since they view the latter as something cultural.

How interesting.

Are they Catholic, Orthodox, or some level of Protestant with Chinese characteristics?

So here's a quick little thing I finished up today. The initial POD is that Japan takes longer to surrender at the end of WWII, and so Korea is never divided, and thus China can focus it's attention on reunification with Taiwan around 1950. This also gave me a chance to use some of the less used parts of the THICC color code.

Thanks for the reply!

I was also wondering, what would the court language of Lotharingia be? I was thinking either Flemish of standard Burgundian French.
