A quick little map for one possible future of "Donnacona's Dream." I have no idea who @telynk was planning to take the Mississippi basin, or if he was planning to have knock-on effects lead to other surviving native American states, so consider this a possible alternate future to what might happen if the thread continues. ;)

Howard actually wrote a few Lovecraftian tales himself, although being Robert Howard rather than Howard Philips, abominations often can be killed with cold steel and white magic, and in one case with humongous snake poison.
This is true, however Howard never had the Elder things or Cthonic Octopoids, which have been very accommodating as the explanations for the "pre-human" civilizations he's mentioned.

Also the Snake-Men are the obviously the spawn of Yig, no matter what anyone says.

This I think can come up Robert Howard take on the matter.

Conan the Barbarian, The Vale of Lost Women.

"A devil from the Outer Dark," he grunted. "Oh, they're nothing uncommon. They lurk as thick as fleas outside the belt of light which surrounds this world. I've heard the wise men of Zamora talk of them. Some find their way to Earth, but when they do they have to take on some earthly form and flesh of some sort. A man like myself, with a sword, is a match for any amount of fangs and talons, infernal or terrestrial..."

I do prefer this as I never been on board for Cosmic Horror as the way Lovecraft put it.

He's bragging here to some extent: he didn't beat the devil made of iron, until he put his hands on a magic knife, and he required another magical plot coupon to defeat the demon a wizard sends after him, but both of these stories may have taken place later in his career. Of course, that man-created magic artifacts are effective is still a departure from proper cosmic horror. :)

I know there is no real relatoin netween the names, but I like how the Bhartiya group is shown in an area where the real life Hindu Nationalist group does not win as many elections. Ahhh, Kaiserreich. Showing how far maps on alternate history have gone by staying in the same place.
What do you mean? The Bharatiya Commune is a Socialist State. ‘Bharatiya’ just means Indian.

This map is a part of @damein fisher's timeline "The Greatest Game In The World" on alternatehistory.com, which will eventually culminate in this mess, although the timeline is currently still in 1848. Essentially the idea is that the North and South just keep compromising on slavery (which eventually turns industrial) all the way up to 1905, when the country just shatters. The US also completely fails at building railroads to the West for far longer than in our timeline, and as a result industrialization and transport links to the interior of the country happen far slower.View attachment 492442
I like it. Feels like an American Warlord Era.

The Early Years

After the surrender at Yorktown in 1781, it seemed as though the war was over. The South was secured by General Nathaniel Greene, New York invested and negotiations opened by Britain.

A raid across the Ohio into Kentucky in August 1782 disrupted the peace negotiations and brought Greene to the Northwest despite the difficulties of supply. With aid from the Delaware tribe, Greene was able to move North and capture Detroit. Britain had been scaling down it's military presence in anticipation of peace so Greene was not challenged until the Battle of Mississagua, just outside York, where he defeated a slightly larger force of regulars and militia, capturing the capital of Upper Canada.

The Colonies stance at the peace negotiations became both stronger and more intransigent. In April 1784 Britain finally accepted the French backed proposals.

The 13 states were officially established by the Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union, ratified on March 1, 1781, the first attempt to give a firmly-defined, constitutional political structure.

The 13 states did not yet consider themselves as a proper country, though, and the document merely defined them as a "firm league of friendship" that would allow every member state to retain its "sovereignty, freedom, and independence."
Pic 2 v2.png

The Articles

1. created a loose confederation of sovereign states operating alongside a weak central government.
2. bestowed most governmental powers to the states.
3. served as the constitution of the fledgling country.

The principle was to preserve the independence and sovereignty of the states. The weak central government established received only the powers which the former colonies recognized as belonging to king and parliament which were concentrated in the Congress. The President of the Continental Congress was a weak figure tasked mostly with presiding. Article IX merely declared that the Congress would "appoint one of their members to preside, provided that no person be allowed to serve in the office of president more than one year in any term of three years."

In practice Presidents performed minor ceremonial duties and often signed documents on behalf of the Congress as a whole.

The Articles formed a war-time confederation of states. While un-ratified, the document was used by the Congress to conduct business, direct the War, conduct diplomacy with foreign nations and to deal with territorial issues and Native American relations.
The adoption of the Articles made few perceptible changes in the federal government, because it did little more than legalize what the Continental Congress had been doing.

Congress needed 9 of 13 states to pass any laws but this high requirement made it very difficult to pass legislation that would affect all 13 states. The Articles were practically impossible to amend, requiring unanimous consent for any amendment, all 13 states would need to agree on a change. Given the rivalries between the states, that rule made the Articles impossible to adapt after the war ended.

Central Government was denied any powers of taxation to fund its operations and relied on voluntary efforts of the states to send tax money to the central government.
The states often failed to meet these requests in full, leaving both Congress and the Continental Army chronically short of money.
Central government couldn't maintain an effective military or back its own paper currency.

This led the States to have their own money systems but there was no common currency. Central government and the States each issued money, which made trade between the States, and other countries, extremely difficult.

Congress was also been denied the power to regulate either foreign trade or interstate commerce meaning the States maintained control over both internal and foreign trade policies.

Large debts had been incurred during the Revolutionary War by both the States and Congress. How to repay those debts became a major issue of debate in peacetime.

Congress was in no position to help settle War debts. Central Government and some States owed huge debts to European countries and investors. Some States paid off their war debts, others did not. Without the power to tax, and with no power affect trade between the states and other countries, Congress was in an economic mess by 1788.

The Articles provided for a blanket acceptance of the Province of Quebec and the Six Nations into the Confederation if they chose to do so but, as Upper Canada did not join voluntarily, it's governance was allocated to New York.

In 1788, Nathaniel Greene was unable to defuse the Newburgh conspiracy but riots by unpaid Pennsylvanian veterans forced Congress to leave Philadelphia temporarily.

Shays Rebellion in 1786-1788, when 2000 western Massachusetts farmers marched on county courthouses to prevent land foreclosures, proved central government couldn't put down an internal rebellion. It had to rely on the state militia sponsored by private Boston business people. With no money, Congress couldn't act to protect the “perpetual union”.

These events so alarmed Founders like George Washington, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and John Dickinson to the point where delegates met at Annapolis in September 1788 to discuss changing the Articles of Confederation.

The group recommended that a meeting of all 13 states be held in Philadelphia. Congress agreed and the Constitutional Convention of 1788 made recommendations to be put to the states to ratify the Articles of Confederation.

Ratification was the process by which the 13 states studied and debated the newly drafted Constitution.

The approval of nine states was needed to put the new government into operation, but as a practical matter the large states of Virginia and New York were crucial if the new scheme were to have any hope of success.
Pic 4 v2.png

The states returned their votes over 1788 & 1790;-
For Against

Delaware 27 3
Pennsylvania 41 28
New Jersey 34 4
Georgia 23 3
Connecticut 115 53
Massachusetts 168 187
Rhode Island 213 2732 [referendum]
Maryland 17 57
South Carolina 134 88
New Hampshire 51 53 [After a re-count]
Virginia 80 88
New York 27 30
North Carolina 174 97

Pic 3 v2.png

The voting took so long because of an escalation of discontent into full rebellion by the oppressed Loyalist/Royalist factions. Notable figures as George Clinton, Samuel Adams, Thomas Paine and Patrick Henry supported the Loyalist opposition to the new Constitution.
Pic 5 v2.png

Whilst refusing to cede their claims to the Central Government, New York and Virginia led negotiations, along with North Carolina and Connecticut, to regularise the claims, despite the objections of the other states, including Massachusetts, which refused to mitigate it's claims, and Maryland, which would only agree the Articles if Virginia agreed to void its claims
Pic 6 v2.png

Loyalist Rebellions shattered the peace.

Shay's forces occupied Massachusetts, Rhode island and parts of Connecticut and eastern New York.
Clinton's forces were defeated in New York but held out in Montrose in the far west of the state.

Upper Canada was again ravaged by the only true professionals of the CU Army, recalled to service having been granted lands in the territory in lieu of wages, after the war.

The situation in Pennsylvania was so bad that Congress agreed, against New York's objections, to admit the Haudenosaunee or Six Nations if they would send military assistance and release their subject tribes to the Government.
Pic 7 v2.png

There were no troops available for the western territories, only Virginia sent it's Militia against the Ohio river rebels in Kentucky but were soundly defeated.

This isn't another RDNA-verse, but something that might interest you anyway! The DeviantArt link can be found here. It's a quick take on the classic Legend of Galactic Heroes, which also serves as a map adaptation of this scenario-profile from 2013.

That -inspired work, though written before the current Die Neue These anime was even conceived, still holds up pretty well. But while this meant minimal editing and polishing, the map itself also provided a bit of a challenge in trying to map out the setting (even with the extensive lore) into a wider galaxy map. In addition, the flags used, which combine both the original OVAs and DNT, come from Reddit (Imperial flag, Alliance flag). Still, it's a pleasure to both work on this and to revisit another sci-fi favorite.

Also, just to be on the safe side, this is a work of fiction. This is not meant to be a political or ideological screed. All rights belong to their respective owners.

With all that said, hope you enjoy this trip into the future...with foppery and whim.

Legend of Galactic Heroes: A Profile of the Future

“In every time, in every place, the deeds of men remain the same…”

In the Year of Our Lord 2039, in a galaxy much like our own, whole cities and entire nations were wiped out in what came to be called the Thirteen Day War. No one knows who fired first, but the generations-long aftermath of the nuclear dark ages that followed would have far-reaching consequences. By AD 2129, the United Earth Government was established in Brisbane, Australia, bringing together the shattered remnants of civilization. For the first time in history, all mankind was unified as one species. This was further solidified as people sallied forth into the Solar System and beyond. The oneness of men, however, could only go so far before human nature and history once more rear their heads . In due time, the burgeoning space colonists grew restless with United Earth. Tensions and calls for independence soon escalated to outright conflict on an interplanetary scale. The ensuing "Earth-Sirius War" reduced Sol's significance altogether as power moved to Sirius and the other colonies. Centuries of further bloodshed and upheavals followed before the colonial states forged the Galactic Federation in AD 2801, ushering in a golden age for mankind.

All that is in itself history now. Know that it’s the year 488 of the Imperial Calendar. Alternatively, 797 if one follows the Universal Calendar. Those still abiding by the Gregorian one and its secular offshoots would recognize it as 3597, for all such technicalities matter these days. Over more than a thousand years, the human race has expanded to settle a sizable portion of the galaxy, thanks in part to advances in terraforming and FTL engines opening up the stars themselves. Yet the cosmos remains at war as two dominant powers vie for supremacy and humanity’s future: the Galaktische Kaiserreich and the democratic Free Planets Alliance.

The Galaktische Kaiserreich, commonly known as the Galactic Empire, the Reich or simply “The Empire” is an absolute monarchy that rose from the ashes of an increasingly decadent and crumbling Galactic Federation. As the aforementioned golden age succumed to turmoil and social malaise over time, an ambitious man by the name of Rudolf von Goldenbaum rose to power. Promising a return to order and vitality for the species, this eventually led to him proclaiming himself Kaiser in a manner not too dissimilar to a certain megalomaniac from old Europe. Perhaps influenced by der Fuhrer, however, he sought to base his new realm on various Germanic influences, with Prussia given precedence. While most people were initially supportive of his crusade, it wasn’t long before he enforced a grandiose “Master Race” and eugenics program that made the Holocaust seem almost trivial in its scale. But though such ghosts of Nazism faded away since the death of the ruling Dynasty’s founder, his legacy remains very evident to this day.

The vast majority are at least of partial Germanic ancestry, including those of Scandinavian or Nordic descent, and overwhelmingly "white" by old Earth standards. The predominant culture, meanwhile, could be best described as Prussian with elements of other European, mainly German customs from the 18th-19th Centuries AD. A repurposed version of Norse mythology has long replaced Christianity as the main religion, though piety is not particularly emphasized outside from the constant references to Odin, Valhalla and Valkyries; coincidentally, the Imperial capital world is also named Odin, situated in the Valhalla Starzone. Feudalism has once more become the order of the day, further strengthening a decadent aristocracy run by conniving, self-absorbed nobles, although a handful of houses still uphold ideals of Noblesse Oblige and alongside commoners, long for reform. Coupled with the caste system established by Kaiser Rudolf, this has served to keep the status quo nigh constant for well over four centuries, even at the cost of encouraging incompetence and entitlement over actual talent. Still, this is a state where honor, order and tradition remain highly regarded, at least in theory.

The story behind the Free Planets Alliance, also known as the FPA or simply the “Alliance” is noteworthy as well. Its origins could be traced to around the 150s IC. Arle Heinessen, a brilliant activist and political figure was said to have escaped the frontier labor camp he was on with thousands of others. Finding an isolated spot off-world away from Imperial eyes, he and his growing number of supporters built what came to be called the "Exile Fleet" with which to leave the Reich altogether in search for a new home. It would be years of hardship and near-failures, though before those bold pioneers and their descendants found a habitable world that would be named in his memory. Free from Imperial bondage, they forged a republic that would expand exponentially.

Unlike the Imperials, the Alliance retains the Universal Calendar system of the old Galactic Federation, of which it holds direct legitimacy from. The FPA's populace is a melting pot of different ethnicities old and new; though many are descended from the original pioneers, following contact (and conflict) with the Empire in 640 UC, a mass influx of Imperial exiles and other “undesirables” led to a population boom like no other. In terms of culture and politics, their society is very reminiscent of the United States and European Union from the era leading up to the Thirteen Day War. Meanwhile, in light of its principles and the nature of FTL travel, federal autonomy prevails over many Alliance worlds. Beneath the surface, however, though democracy is non-negotiable for Alliance citizens, all is not well. The ideals and dedication behind the government's founding in time gave way to corruption and a rotting, opportunistic bureaucracy. Combined with the strains of war and growing uncertainty, it could seem barely functioning. and increasingly less so with each passing year. Nonetheless, the people would rather have all those flaws than lose their freedom, equality and fraternity.

Most if not all planets in the known, “settled” universe are under either power’s control. The nominally Imperial world of Fezzan, however, serves as a kind of neutral buffer thanks to its significant autonomy, though its opportunistic merchants and corporations may have other plans. Technology, meanwhile, hasn’t advanced all that much since the days of the Galactic Federation or even United Earth. Energy weapons have long since become commonplace, though haven’t replaced old-fashioned solid ordinance and even melee weapons; following advances in EMP-based countermeasures and a botched attempt at creating fully automated armies at some point in the past, AI never really caught on outside of computers. Neither have languages significantly changed in all that time. The German and English used in the Reich and FPA respectively (or at least their formal versions) would still be recognizable to someone from 1,500 years in the past, if somewhat “mangled.”

Thus, for well over a century, these two interstellar powers, each with their own ideals and visions of a just society, have struggled over mankind’s future. While the use of nuclear weapons remains taboo, many lives continue to perish in a seemingly endless cycle of violence on and off-world. Across stars and around orbital spaces, whole fleets of starships wage battle over ranges, scales and even casualties dwarfing anything their common ancestors on Earth could have ever imagined. But changes, if supposedly small ones are coming.

A talented nobleman by the name of Reinhard von Lohengramm has risen up the ranks by his own hand to become one of the youngest admirals in the Reich’s history; he and his comrades however have much larger plans for the Empire at the expense of the still-ruling Goldenbaums. Meanwhile, Yang Wen-li, a reluctant historian-turned military officer and his network of allies in the Alliance military grow increasingly influential to their growing concern. Already these two individuals are (directly or otherwise) shaping the course not just the war but possibly human civilization itself. Perhaps, as some are suggesting, a new Götterdämmerung may very be upon the universe in these Wagnerian times.

All the while, rumors abound from a certain backwater planet in the original Solar System. Humanity’s homeworld had long slid into obscurity after the collapse of United Earth. No one’s really certain, but those who remained after tht foe bloody fall either lefr greener pastures or splintered in an orgy of constant fighting. That was, until a strange faith known as the Terraist Church emerged and united many of the survivors. Combining various religious beliefs, warped memories of Earth’s former glory and the repurposed symbolism of the “Pale Blue Dot,” this cult has managed to establish branches in both the Empire and Alliance. While the specifics elude both sides, it’s evident that these would-be fanatics have their own designs for the human race, along with a vested interest in what those who may seize the universe.

Elsewhere though, in a nondescript estate in Odin, such conspiracies and events fall by the wayside as an albino Imperial officer pays his respects to an unmarked monument; it is the only time in a year that this otherwise boisterous embodiment of the Reich's principles does so. Hidden underneath are a pair of long-broken glasses, a rusting Iron Cross and a rotted flower, all encased in special glass. Their symbolism is lost to time...but not to this man. He had after all seen history unfold on Earth.

He was there...

For those curious, the German text and translation (taken from the original OVAs) are as follows:

Zu Jeder Zeit
An Jedem Ort
Bleibt Das Tun
Der Menschen Das Gleiche
(In every time, in every place, the deeds of men remain the same)

I really, really love this. I'm a old fan of LoGH, so hats off for doing this, and the details you put into it.

I can't help, but feel how alone Prussia must be at this point of time. (The little monument being to Germany, Austria and Hungary.) He's the 'last man standing' compare to everyone else, but it is lonely at the top, let alone the crimes of the Empire. (Mind you, I'm bias towards the Empire and Reinhard even though I do feel bad for the fate of the Alliance and Yang.)

What of the Alliance, Fezzan, and even Earth/Terra Church? If Prussia still alive as the personification of the Empire, surely the other powers would be the same. (If not a old Earth nation, than a original one would do.)

Thanks! And glad you noticed that little reference at the end. ;)

For totally not Prussia, he's not "alone" technically. As there'd be others like him, including planetary ones in his corner of the galaxy who'd also be rather Germanic generally. Which isn't getting to the Alliance. Reinhard's Empire , though, might lead to another embodiment taking his place who might bear a semblance to resemble one of those he still mourns.

Your most welcome!

Oh, that's actually very interesting. He may not be alone, but clearly he deeply missed those closest to him. Planetary personifications would be fascinating to look at, both within the Empire and Alliance.

Heinessen himself being the Alliance's personification is also very unique and oddly makes a lot of sense.

I can only assume the Nation-Spirt of Reinhard's Empire would look like Prussia's brother, Germany.

Has anyone ever done an atom-bomb iSOT scenario? For example, if in 1945 instead of being harmed/obliterated/destroyed, Hiroshima and Nagasaki were ISOT'd to a blank Earth... and their location replaced with more virgin Earth?

ISOT-Bombs? interesting idea.

Ooh. Neat. Does that continue for every nuke used thereafter, or just that one event? Did it happen for the Trinity test? I could see nukes being used way more often if it applies to all nukes, simply because “it’s humane” and no one has to pay attention to the horrors of the aftermath. Does every nuked plot of land go to the same world? That would also be interesting.

That's a fascinating idea. I expect you'd see governments using ISOT bombs to destroy toxic/nuclear waste and to refresh resources.
