Wooster's World
A (sort-of) sequel to this post and this post.
Welcome to Wooster’s World!
When Germany invaded Britain in 1940 and reduced it to a rump Reichskomissariat, it seemed that the sun had set on these sceptred isles forever. Such was not the case! Bertie Wooster, formerly an idle socialite, rose from the woodwork to lead an intrepid liberation movement that would ultimately oust the Teutonic tyrants as the Red Army swept over their hinterland. When the dust settled, Wooster and his allies in the ‘Drones Set’ established a benevolent dictatorship, which could only sit on the sidelines and watch as the world around them hunkered down for an international struggle with stakes as high as those at the Little Whinging Summer Fair – i.e. very.
On one side you have the Americans, with their twenty eight thousand five hundred and sixty-two little 'organisations'. You have the Atlantic Security Organisation, the South Atlantic Treaty Organisation, the West Pacific Treaty Organisation, the East-Asia Security Organisation, the Tehran Security Cooperation Organisation, et cetera, et cetera. For all that the USA's supposed to be a bastion of democracy, it doesn't seem to half enjoy cosying up to some pretty ghastly types, be it Francoist Spain ("Oh, yes, we're fascist all right! Got a problem with that, liberal?"), the Congo Free State (any resemblance to colonial regimes, living or dead, is entirely coincidental), to that old chestnut the Union of South Africa (Don't ask. Really, don't ask). That's not to mention China ("remember, its Socialist Nationalism, guys!") who have skyrocketed from an impoverished geopolitical doorstop to the third pole of the Cold War, and are drifting away from America at breakneck pace, dragging lots of Asia with them.
Not that the Soviets are much better. Sure, the 'Community of Europe' is free enough (think OTL Finland, but even closer to Moscow), and the French State (yeah, that French State) is sort of an independent power in its own right, but the pro-Moscow socialists are still in charge and make no mistake, if any one of those countries steps out of line there will be T-72s or possibly worse coming their way (look at what happened to Bavaria). Outside Western Europe, the Soviets generally keep their 'allies' on such a tight leash one wonders why they even bothered with the pretence of independence. The Nordic Federation, Hungary, Turkey and the rest of the 'Near Abroad' are locked into the Minsk Association, with a unified military and nuclear high command that happens to be dominated by the Red Army, alongside a common economic policy that also just so happens to compliment whatever the Russians are doing at the given moment, disregarding any developments elsewhere. The 'Mutual Development Bloc' is a slightly different beast: to keep out American neo-colonialism, the Russians have dabbled in it themselves and locked down a plethora of clients from the National Arabian Republic to the Central African Federation, most of which are about as stable as something that isn't whatsoever.
That leaves the third parties. Wooster's Britain is lucky in that somehow everybody likes them –it’s not Communist so the Americans love it, but has refused to join the ASO and so won the warmth of the Soviets. To boot, its strong central government, mixed economic model and intensely patriotic national culture now known as ‘Woosterism’ has found a kindred spirit in Peking. You've got the Socialist Union of Asia which is having a blast 'rationalising' away several thousand years of Indochinese socio-geography, and Abyssinia which is having way more fun than it deserves. Then there's that tedious situation in India, which is split between communist and anti-communist factions which are themselves split again. In Bengal you have the Marxist-Leninist People's Republic of India, and further south you have the libertarian socialist Democratic Republic of India. Between them is wedged the Republic of India, not to be confused with the Republic of India (to the north). You can tell them apart because the Republic of India is absolutely non-accommodationist towards the Princely States, and seeks to rebuild a nationalist India on the Chinese model, whereas the Republic of India is an accommodationist federation backed by China for the sole purpose that it is divided and weak. So yes, hope that clears things up.
Oh, and America controls all of Antarctica, in case you were wondering, because they quite understandably felt that a collection of washed-up dictatorships and the nightmare that is postwar Japan (history ends in 1854 and starts in 1948) isn't really up to scratch with getting to grab all of continental Europe.
