In short, Yugoslavia doesn't collapse and instead it's reformed into a federation similar to the Union of Soviet Sovereign States.
The EU is a strong union of 27 countries with open borders and some with a common currency, some political scientist call it as the "European civilization" and the USSR as the "Russian civilization"

@bobhope - quick question that fabulous second map (with some towns and cities) is there a 20th Century version - maybe just of the north west/ benelux plus surrounds

noticed that no antwerp or amsterdam and Holland is a bit moist still
Yeah, its 16th century only and I was only adding cities as I needed them, sorry.
I'm just starting the Wars of Religion/Dutch Independence, so those cities should be along soon.

@Bob Hope Splendid as always. I do think you should add Mainz to the key though, with the other electorates. Also perhaps have them and Trier also labeled as Arch-Bishoprics or remove that part from Cologne. It just makes it look odd when it is the only one. Could you perhaps explain a bit on what happened to Wurttemberg? I had been highly interested with your last map in how it was bundled with Far Austria and I am wondering how it ended up separated again. Would it just be a stylistic difference between this map and the last for that Duchy’s coloring or is it based on the tightness of administration? I also believe you have left out the Prince-Bishopric of Brixen, down in the Tyrol area. I only noticed when looking at the odd bit of landing jutting out of Salzburg. Seems a little bit of Bamberg was between the two. Any story behind the little bit of land Voralberg surrounds? And there is a bit of greenish coloring mother fo Guelders in the water.

THE COMING OF THE NEW CENTURY

At the dawn of the 29th Century, the Cascadian states are more disunified than ever. The last time the region united under a single hegemon, Jon II, was in the late 27th Century, and the Dwitic succession laws of the region mean that the last century has seen the once-formidable kingdom break into fifteen different states, each ruled by a family related to the former House of Vaypama. The most powerful of these states is Portland, under the House of Tonkin, but its elderly matriarch is on her deathbed, and her passing will result in yet another division of the family lands and possibly a civil war. In the north, the political hegemony of the Salish Confederacy is teetering on destruction due to internal discord. In the south the formerly promising states of Wilyumet and Jifsun have both collapsed in succession disputes, leaving several ambitious (and feuding) warlords in their place. In the ecclesiastical world, the 2798 elections to the Hows of Justiss have resulted in the ambitious Mat Hill becoming the Guardian, a man who is very much interested in improving the Hows’ temporal power.
GOVERNANCE

The fifteen independent states follow a complex system of government known locally as Effendo-Genocracy, and to outsiders as chaotic lunacy. Each independent state is ruled by a noble family, and is technically the collective property of said family. To reflect this, the eldest member of the family (morsashah) and nominal head of the state, who appoints another, usually younger, member (sardar) to run things on a day-to-day basis. The sardar can enact or repeal legislation at will (as long as it is approved by the Spiritual Assembly of said independent state), but the morsashah can depose the sardar either with the backing of or at the behest of the Spiritual Assembly, which they tend to approve. Additionally, all members of the family are entitled to equal access to the morsashah, and as you can imagine this results in an absurd amount of jockeying for power. Since the succession is also Dwitic, this means that a scorned sardar could very well return to his estates to raise a militia to depose the morsashah, adding an extra level of danger to family politics. As you might imagine, it’s extremely difficult for most sardars to get anything done, and this leads to sardars going on conquering sprees or giving donatives to win over the peasantry (Spiritual Assemblies are elected from the Baha’i faithful of each state). While this sounds like it would make the quality of life for the lower classes high, since no sardar is going to raise taxes the money for these donatives comes from stealing the things of the people the next state over. As such, there is a constant state of low-level warfare and raiding between the states, and nearly every person has either lost a relative to the raids or knows someone who has.
SUCCESSION LAWS

The succession laws of all the Cascadian states are purely Dwitic; Upon the death of any member of the family, the lands held by them are divided amongst all adult relatives, both male and female. All of these new statelets remain under the hegemony of the morsashah, but are effectively semi-independent feudal lords that maintain their own armies and treasuries, only paying ten percent of their taxes forward to the sardar and living a comfortable distance from the sardar’s base, so that they don’t get any ideas about having them….disposed of. Usually, the gradual splintering of the state carries on for several generations until it collapses under its own weight, at which point either the Spiritual Assembly elects a new man or woman to reunify the region or a neighboring family moves in and takes over.
POPULACE

The population of Cascadia is roughly three million total, and in terms of appearance, residence and means of food production can be divided into three parts, as listed. The first region is the Wilyumet-Culumbia Valley, located in the center of the region. The fertile farmland supports almost a million people, a third of the former kingdom’s population. The people of the Valley are slightly, albeit noticeably, darker, with many people having narrower eyes and wider noses than those from the surrounding forest. They primarily live in semi-fortified farming villages. The second region is the littoral of the Salish Sea, where about three-fourths of a million live. They live off of a mixed fishing-farming system, which supports such a comparatively large population. The Salishers also trend towards having narrower eyes, and live in primarily coastal settlements. The third region are the forests, whose heavy rains allow for harvests from land that would normally be infertile. The foresters live primarily in the lands south and west of the Wilyumet-Culumbia Valley, but there are also groups on the Olympic Peninsula and in the mountains. They bear a superficial resemblance to their Salisher cousins, but are generally more fair-skinned. The predominant religion in Cascadia is the Baha’i Faith, but like most areas there is a not-quite-worship of animistic spirits that most Spiritual Assemblies look the other way on. Cascadia is also notable because it is one of the few regions in North America where is no class difference in terms of consumed grain--everyone eats oats, be they noble or yeoman. Speaking of classes, Cascadia’s class structure is notably more egalitarian than that of Culumbia, with the nobility accounting for something like 10% of the populace, the other 90% being yeomen. While still in roughly the same position as serfs on the far side of the mountains, the yeoman have a much greater deal of freedom, not being tied to their land and having indirect control of their own government via the Spiritual Assembly. Said freedom of movement allows for a great deal of migration to the cities, and as such the five largest cities of the region far outstripe any on eastern side of the mountains; Yoogeen has just over 25,000, Vancoovur, Seeatl and Victoria have about 35,000 each, and Portland towers above the rest with over 50,000.
RELIGION

As previously mentioned, the primary religion of Cascadia is a warped version of the modern Baha’i Faith. For those of you unaware, the Baha’i Faith is a member of the Babist branch of Abrahamic monotheism and teaches (cliff note version, look it up if you want to know more) that all people are equal and have a duty to take care of each other, that all religions are based in truth and that God sometimes appears before pious people to instruct them on how to live a better life. The principles as given by Baha’u’llah and his successors, as well as being modified and extended by the Hows of Justiss (House of Justice) are so thoroughly interwoven with Cascadian society (as seen in the governance section) that it can be impossible to imagine a Cascadia without it; However, the faith is relatively new to the region, having first become widespread during the decline phase of the Oragunian Empire in the 26th Century. Prior to the conquest of the region, the predominant faith had been a pantheist form of Buddhism (it’s weird, I’ll explain it more in the Colorado section), which the Oragunians had not taken kindly to. While the Norblads had been in power they had viciously persecuted the Buddhists, and unsurprisingly this lead to Buddhism going underground. This left a spiritual vacuum in the life of your average yeoman, and the rather violent and draconian nature of Culumbian Christianity made many reluctant to join. It was into this vacuum that missionaries from the Alask Empire stepped. Baha’i, with its surface resemblance to both Buddhism and Catholicism, was a more palatable draw, and it was helped along by a series of charismatic folk preachers. After the Vaypamas took power, the mass persecutions of the last century suddenly ended as resources were turned elsewhere. With the mass burnings abruptly over, Buddhism re-emerged into society to suddenly find itself with an unprecedented rival in the new faith. For the next half-century, the two groups struggled for the soul of Cascadia, but after the first few years the outcome was never really in doubt; The Oragunians were more willing to deal with the Baha’i, who like themselves worshipped Christ, than they were the Buddhists, and the Baha’i could also draw on the resources of pious Alask to further shore up their proselytizing. By the time Ida was finally deposed in 2586, the Baha’i now had both a super-majority of the populace and state backing from the newly-founded Kingdom of Cascadia. The new religion began modifying the government around it, slowly making Spiritual Assemblies and their expanded roles mainstream and extending rights to all (faithful) subjects of the north-west.
HISTORY

Like Culumbia, the earliest state to form in Cascadia after the fall of Murica is semi-mythical. According to some rather patchy records that survived the Massacre of Astoria, the Cascadian Empire was carved from the ruins of the collapsing state by the great Ernust I Callunbac, who ruled from Cali all the way up to Maritime Alask. However, after several rounds of civil wars, Cascadia lost most of its territories and became so divided that the Norblads were able to annex it piecemeal, subsuming the Buddhist states into the Oragunian Empire. The history of Cascadia effectively ended when it was conquered, as all actual political power was relocated to Portland, which was dominated by Easterners.

Cascadia’s history starts back up in 2586, when Duke Jon of Astoria marched on Portland and deposed the last Empress, declaring himself the King of Cascadia and Baha’i the state religion. Most of the region’s dukes supported the new king, but his religious policies caused a massive pushback in the south, where the Buddhist dukes of Craytur, Clamath, and Nooport rose against the Tonkins, declaring the Kingdom of Jifsun and inviting a member of the Hagard Dynasty of Cali to take the throne. Jon scrambled to respond to the rebellion, but before he could get an army down the Wilyumet a Cali armada stormed Coosbay. Rather than risking an out-to-out battle, Jon sued for peace with the rebels, eating his pride in exchange for getting the Californios to leave. In 2589, the Hagards were overthrown and the foreigners left Coosbay, followed shortly by many of the die-hard Buddhists who could see the writing on the wall. Jon swept into Jifson and reduced it in a year, ending the short breakaway state. After the invasion, Jon set about creating a permanent standing army to prevent such a rebellion from happening again, as much of the delay in response had been sent gathering soldiers. However, this action spooked the nobility and in 2592 the dukes of the Jorjun Straits (Victoria, Vancoovur, Nanymo and Bellingham) revolted. Jon marched north and reduced Vancoovur and Bellingham after a year and a half of siege, but was unable to cross on to Victoria. After a half-year long standoff, Jon made peace with the Victorians, effectively establishing the status quo antebellum. Jon went back south to continue his reforms, but when he tried to impose taxes upon the nobility in 2597, the dukes of Yoogeen and Saylum marched on the capital and demanded he abdicate. Jon, not wanting another civil war, agrees and in early 2598 his son Raburt took the throne. Raburt managed to get the dukes behind him for an invasion of Culumbia. In 2603 he crossed the Cascades, but as already mentioned was defeated and killed by Jorj I. After Raburt’s death Cascadia shattered as the current succession laws came into effect.

For the next half a century (the First Warring States Period) Cascadia was torn apart by wars, chaotic successions, and alternating periods of famines. However, there is a temporary mediatizing period in response to the Cascadian Crusade in 2647, as the Wilyumet and Salish states band together to resist the incursion of the Catholics. The usually hostile states came together under the hegemony of Madux Nguyen, the Duke of Olympia, after both Portland and Astoria were brutally sacked. Nguyen waged a successful war of attrition, wearing down the morale and supply lines of the crusading force via light infantry sallies from the dense forests. After the Enteeryurites withdrew in the third year, Nguyen became more brazen and even risked a full-out battle at Madrona, which although a tactical loss succeeds in forcing a withdrawal by the Crusaders.

After the end of the Crusade, Nguyen attempted to mend the rifts between the petty states, but all he achieved was to drive them further apart, causing a series of civil wars that he was barely able to triumph in. In 2665, just as he begins attempting to centralize the realm, he is assassinated by a disgruntled nobleman. The House of Nguyen is massacred, but the last surviving member, Vensunt, escapes north with a few retainers. However, before all of Madux’s labors are lost one of his lieutenants, Caytlyn Frey, declares herself queen and takes the Nguyen’s army mostly attack and puts down the various rebellions. Within half a decade Caytlyn has successfully restored unity, using her new force to turn back the Second Cascadian Crusade at Scamania in 2670. However, Caytlyn is extremely pious and in 2678 declares herself a theophanic (one who God has appeared to) and starts drafting new teachings in the model of the Hows of Justiss. Needless to say this alienates many of her subjects, and when Caytlyn dies in 2681 there is a massive uprising against her son, Jon II. Jon is killed in battle in 2684 and Cascadia implodes yet again, beginning the Second Warring States period.

By the 2740s, the Northern Archon was tiring of the constant raids from the north, and he gave a sizeable sum of money and mercenaries to Duke Gayb of Clamath in the hopes that he would, if not reunify Cascadia, at least turn his attention north. Gayb embarked upon a series of conquests, having conquered all of Jifsun within three years and having reached Portland by 2751. However, this sudden rise to power provoked a response from the Salish states, and in 2752 they elected Alux of Tacoma as First General of the Salish Confederacy. Gayb and Alux struggled back and forth across the Culumbian valley for over a decade until finally, in 2764, Gayb’s realm was shattered by a popular uprising and the rebels and Salishers were free to impose terms. The Treaty of Beevurtun of 2765 set the political status quo until the present day; The Salish Confederacy became the effective hegemon of Cascadia and Portland and the lands around it were restored to the House of Tonkin to act as a buffer. The former duchies of Craytur, Coosbay and Nooport were restored to the Houses of Theelsun, Jinjyr-Hagard and Sawyur, respectfully, while Clamath would be given over to a branch of the House of Carman, Alux’s own. The Wilyumet valley was to be divided between Gayb’s sons Tomus and Gayb, while the former Duke of Clamath himself was exiled to Alask.

Alux died in 2773, and the Salishers peacefully elected Jon, the Duke of Bellingham to replace him. Jon died in 2779 and was succeeded by the Duke of Olympia, also named Alux. Alux II died in 2792. He was succeeded by Linun, the Duke of Seeatl, who currently reigns. However, this dominance by the Pyoojut States alienated the northern states, and in 2799 the Dukes of Vancoover, Victoria and Nanymo revolted and declared the Jorjun Confederacy, citing neglect by their southern brothers as the primary reason. This sudden power fluctuation may very well give an opportunity for a southern duke to make a bid for power, possibly opening another Warring States Period.
TRADE

Exports; Cascadia’s primary exports are all biological or biologically derived. Their most common goods are timber, which is usually sold down the coast to Cali or the lands that lay beyond, and wooden goods, primarily ship hulls (redwood is considered second only to live oak), once again primarily to Cali, and the wooden furniture for which they are famous. Redwood furniture is prized as a sign of class across the Greater Pacific, and is sometimes even seen in the East or in Mexico. There is also a good trade in weapons and metal tools, which are made from Culumbian ores and sold north to the Alask or Tlingit. While not nearly equal to the products of Cali, few of the northmen know that, and so they are both well-priced and well-prized. Cascadia also exports ideas, as the philosophers who dwell in the areas around the Howss of Justis spend most of their time engrossed in thought and writing, which is often read (albeit disdainfully) by their counterparts in Cali. The great Cascadian philosopher Lynun’s writings, who lived about a century before the Downfall, are one of the nine pillars of Californio philosophy. Cascadia is also the largest producer of paper north of the Carribbean, enabling the writings of the southerners and the Desereti scribes.

Imports; Cascadia imports porcelain, textiles and glassware from Cali, and wine from both the former and Culumbia. Salt is mostly imported across the mountains from the Desereti, and imports most of its pelts, cattle stock and ores from the Culumbians. They also import (whale) oil, ivory and wool from the Alask, much of which is then sold on to the Californios. There is an ongoing trade war, nicknamed the ‘Fruit War’, as local fruit producers attempt to edge out the Californios who traditionally dominated the market.
DIPLOMACY

As Cascadia is not a unified region, there is no real way to represent it diplomatically on anything other than an individual state level. In terms of foregin diplomacy, there are general feelings, but little beyond that. Most Cascadians dislike Culumbians due to the two regions’ history, while many regard the Desereti and Tlingit with outright hostility. Alask are usually warmly regarded, similarly to Californios.

In terms of internal politics, everyone who isn’t in the Confederacy is hostile to the Salishers, both out of fear of their armies and dislike of their tendency towards arrogance and imperialism. The Salishers have a very patronizing attitude towards the other Cascadians, which breeds even more resentment. Portland, under the House of Tonkin, is also very imperialistic as they desire to reconquer their old lands. The Wilyumet duchies, Yoogeen and Corvalus (Saylum had been burned during the First Warring States period) both despise each other, as both Duke Tomus and Duke Jon (Gayb the Younger’s son) wish to unite the lands of the House of Clamath and restore their father/grand-father’s realm. The Duchy of Nooport, west of Corvalus, is neutral in the ongoing struggles as their Duke, Madux, is making bank off of trading between the states. Craytur, under Marc Theelsun, has made a shaky secret alliance with Coosbay’s Caytlyn II to partition Clamath, not realizing that Caytlyn has no intention of stopping at the agreed line. Jon of Clamath, meanwhile, is completely oblivious and is currently making Northern Protector Torres’ life hell by burning the roads and other infrastructures which the Californios have spent decades building.

OK, I have two different ideas for maps, I'll probably do both, but I'm curious as to which one people would want to see first.
A. An alternate take on handmaidens tale depicting Gilead as a series of armed uprisings across New England during the Great Depression.
B. A post apocalyptic North America where a great lakes based military power is attempting to unify the continent under a military theocracy which worships a fusion of Lady Liberty and Christopher Columbus with some Jesus sprinkled in.

Just fuse them together- have the Great Depression become apocalyptic, then have Gilead take over the great lakes and invade NE.

Original text:
The North American Confederation
was born from various former European colonies and governments-in-exile in North America. After the French Revolution of 1823 and the bloody fall of England and half of Europe to the French revolutionary forces, the French and English government-in-exile founded a defensive alliance, fearing the future French invasion. They were later joined by other former colonies, such as New Holland and Skovland, the young republics of Texas and California (one of the reasons why Mexico is on the French side) and several indigenous tribes. The defensive alliance has turned into a loose federation. The original forced neighborhood soon turned into a friendly strong union, bound by a single economic space and a railway network. Later, the NAC accepted Alaska, which was saved from the bloody fall of Tsarist Russia. Recently, the Confederation acquired Greenland and Jamaica in a war that nearly plunged the world into the abyss of nuclear war, but thanks to cold heads, the crisis was resolved. Today, the Confederation is strong as ever and watching with interest to the South African situation in search of benefits.

The French Hegemony stretches all over Europe and even beyond its borders. Born in the fire of the French Revolution, it went a long way through constitutional monarchy, republicanism, radical republicanism, again a constitutional monarchy (with a talented general as the new king). After the bloody Pan-Eurasian war, when France lost millions of soldiers in the trenches of the Polish front, crazy technocrats named rationalists came to power (nothing to do with philosophy). Together with the allied Venice, France began to actively promote ideas of scientific racism and radical *Darwinism, making the lives of native Africans a real hell. The bloody suppression of the English uprising of 1947 proved that the current government is not going to lose a drop of its land. The same impulse almost destroyed the world in nuclear fire when NAC occupied Greenland when a small local population rose up and asked for help. Only the rouge army of the French general, who clearly did not want to see the world in fire, taking Paris hostage, forced France to go on a truce with NAC. What happened with the rebel general after this is unknown.
Today, France is conducting a large-scale intervention in the once neutral Sudafrica, where a socialist uprising threatens to unleash the new Franco-Russian war.

The Holy Eurasian People's Union originates from a powerful Russian empire stretching from Poland to Alaska. Unfortunately, even the most powerful army in Eurasia did not have enough for the war on two fronts AKA the Eurasian war against France and Japan. After several years of heavy trench battles, Tsarist Russia fell into the socialist revolution, lost Eastern Europe to France, the Far East to Japan, Alaska to NAC, and lost protectorate over Persia (at least Turkey and the Straits were returned in the late stages of the revolution). The Russian Empire was replaced by the Eurasian People's Union with moderate socialists in power, who were soon peacefully displaced (yes, overthrown) by radical Christian socialists who completely changed the administrative division by removing many Islamic autonomous republics, and adding the ‘Holy’ to the name of the country. Modern Russia does not represent anything good. Only Orthodox Christians have the right to live in a beautiful socialist Russia; if you are a Muslim, be kind, accept the true faith, or be repressed. The Holy Synod, a mixture of SS and Latin American deathsquads, actively suppresses all discontent in Tatarstan and Central Asia and departs the most daring peoples to newly formed autonomous republics in Central Asia. Now, the Synod has made tremendous progress in the Caucasus, where the entire Islamic population was either killed or deported to Central Asia or Turkey, and this is only the beginning. At the moment, HEPU actively (but trying not to lose credibility) proves to France that they have nothing to do with the socialist revolution in Sudafrica, but the French Hegemony doesn’t listens and actively prepares for war, because many of the leaders of the uprising speak Russian.

The Japanese Empire is the third great power of the Big Three of the Old World. Being opened much earlier than IOTL, by the time of the Eurasian war, Japan controlled the entire continental China, Korea, Indochina and Hawaii. After the Russian Revolution, they also received part of the Far East with Manchuria. After that, Japan carried away by the construction of the Nanking Union of Prosperity and the imposition of its culture and language on the conquered nations (the Korean culture is basically dead, with the culture of Indochina is inline). Any attempt of resistance is brutally suppressed. Now Japan returns to the world arena, taking an active part in the South African crisis by sending descendants of Russian refugees from Tsarist Russia to Sudafrica to train the socialist rebels...

After a very long wait due to technical issues and real-life occurrences, I have been able to get back into mapping, writing, world building, and all the fun things that go with those.

In late February I posted a concept art map for a Fallout fan game. Now I've gone ahead and completed the map, and I also tried to make it a bit more legible.

MY8sZ8j.png

This map fully incorporates the terrain/encounters map data from Fallout 1, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics. I then integrated the map data from Fallout: Nevada and Fallout: Sonora, two fan games on the Fallout 2 engine by Nevada Band Studios. At the moment, Nevada is available in English and Sonora is being translated. I also integrated locations from Wasteland 1 and 2 (F:Sonora replaced Wasteland 1's terrain) and the two locations from Wasteland 3's alpha. The map also uses Van Buren's pre-release map and incorporates the world of Fallout 1.5 Resurrection, another fan game on the Fallout 2 engine. I have also rearranged the DLC locations from Fallout: New Vegas based on my own estimations of how they would align with the maps of Fallout: Nevada and Van Buren.

I don't really have any goal with this map in mind. As the fan game it was intended for has lost steam, I think that I just wanted to finish it to prove to myself it could be done and that I've still got it in me before I delve into my real major project. I still think it would make a lovely tabletop RPG map and if anyone has a Fallout map project in mind they are more than welcome to use this map as a resource. I'm currently stranded on a computer that can't run any Fallout games so if any more mods or sequels come out soon, I won't be updating it for a while. that's okay, because as I said I'm shifting all focus to another, older project.

I knew there was something missing from the Electorate list, just couldn't figure out what.... Thank you for that.
Good point regarding the Arch- Bisheropics, i'll take that on board.
Wurttemberg saw it's Duke driven out by the Swabian League and sold to Charles V in 1522, the Duke was re-instated, with French help, in 1535, so, for a short period, Wurttemberg was Habsburg.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulrich,_Duke_of_Württemberg for more info.
I'll look in to Salzburg/Brixen etc.

No story that I know of regarding Voralberg, just one of those juristictional things in that area I supposed.

As to the greenish colouring in various areas around the coast of Holland, these are Polders in construction. I was able to get data for 1500 & 1600 but nothing on when they were completed.

Thanks for the link, I love Eric Flint's work and did not know this site existed, I'm book marking it.

This is a zoogeographic map of the distribution of an alternate genus of giant rats (Auromys) inhabiting the alternate volcanic archipelago of the Aurora Islands, in front of the South African atlantic shore.

Aurora.png

The Auromys giant rats would have evolved from an African rodent ancestor which would have rafted to the primitive single volcanic island a few million of years ago and due to the isolation and lack of competition would have evolved into a gigantic form, becomig the top predator of the island. After the collapse of the central Great Caldera, the primitive island was split in several new islands which continued to change due to volcanic activity. The different subpopulations of the primal Auromys became isolated between them and evolved into new separate species.

At the moment of the arrival of the European explorers by the mid-16th century, there were at least twelve different species of giant rats inhabiting the Aurora Islands. However, the introduction of invasive species like feral cats or dogs decimated the extant species until the South African administration passed laws of protections of the giant rats during the first half of the 20th century. It was too late for at least one of the species, the Juliana Island giant rat, which was declared extinct in 1932.

The remaining eleven species have been also more or less affected by the human settlement: the subspecies of the North Eliana giant rat inhabiting Lacena island (Auromys nigra lacenae) was already extirpated by 1890, and the other subspecies inhabiting Verena island (Auromys nigra verenae) is believed to have been reduced to 20 or 30 adults; the Orianna giant rat is reduced to three separate tiny subpopulations and its risk of global extinction was so high that the local government established a semi-wild breeding population in the uninhabited Lorena island; the status of the two species of Arilena island, the most populated and developed island of the archipelago, is critical as well, in fact the lowland species has not been sighted since 1982 and might be extinct; and finally the Eudora island species is currently extinct in the wild but started to be reintroduced. As a positive note, the Alina island species, which was believed to be extinct since 1947, was rediscovered in the central hill of the island in 2011 and despite its low numbers, the tiny population seem to be relatively safe.

The zoologists believe that a 13th species existed in Adara island before the European arrival, but the accidental introduction of the neighbouring species of Lara island (today called the Great Caldera giant rat, as Lara is the main remainder of the collapsed, submerged caldera) caused the extinction of the yet to be described Adara island giant rat because of direct competition (the Great Caldera giant rat is the largest species of all the Auromys species).

Here's a new map for the RDNA-verse. This one though covering both the Free Nations of Africa and the "New Great Game" between the various political blocs. The DeviantArt version can be found here.

While this is more of an "historical" snapshot set in 1974, it's an opportunity to really expound on the situation in Africa, not too unlike the entry on The United African States. With much of the material being either wholly new or thoroughly retconned from the barebones 2010-11 rendition of the same region, I try to not only make the universe even more believable. I also make a point to highlight both the Orwellian "perpetual struggle" of the wider Cold War is being replicated in unique ways, and how various political/ideological/social scenarios could emerge with the same broad circumstances. That there are parallels with various events in postcolonial history, including the Angolan Civil War and Rhodesian Bush War, isn't just a coincidence, in which one change of events could make all the difference.

While much larger and a bit more ambitious, as with the previous "Long Cold War"-themed maps, I also incorporated some of the sleek interfaces and customized stylings of the Thousand Week Reich and The New Order mods for Hearts of Iron IV to give that in-universe "vidscreen" aesthetic. Whether it's the product of whoever runs An Examination of Extra-Universal Systems of Government or the Agency, to say nothing of the "N-P Identity" notes mentioned, which may or may not be shorthand for "Nation-Personification"...I'll leave that up for the viewer to decide.

Just to be on the safe side, this is a work of fiction. This is not a political or ideological screed. The politically incorrect details in the map and text as deliberately meant to be in-universe. In addition, depiction is not endorsement.

All the same, hope you enjoy! Vive la liberté!

The New Great Game: The Struggle for Free Africa

For Africa, the years following the Terror have seen a dramatic upheaval across societal, economic, political and ideological lines, such that those who were alive in 1920 would barely recognize it. One constant, however, has been the struggle for control and supremacy over the continent, especially the remaining regions not under the thumb of the Collectivist Internationale. Though this has been called by various names, with similarly myriad forms and degrees of intensity, it's most commonly known as the "New Great Game."

The term invokes the so-called "Great Game" of the 19th and early 20th Centuries, when the great powers sought to expand their influence over the landmass. There's debate among scholars as to when this began, pointing to events as varied as the seizure of the Cape by the United Kingdom in 1796 and the founding of New Providence by former slaves from the American Federation in 1825, the latter setting the stage for the current West African Federation. Whatever the case, the reach of the European nations up until the 1860s had mostly been limited to coastal colonies, outposts, and whatever native chiefs or kingdoms were aligned with them. By the time a German expedition led by Theodor Nachtigal conquered Dahomey, however, the tides were changing. Advances in industrial technologies, medicine and communications meant that the formerly uncharted interior could be accessed by more than just a handful of missionaries, teachers, or foolhardy explorers. Whether through peaceful means or by force, the vast lands were carved up until only Abyssinia and Morocco remained as truly independent states by 1900, with the Liberians under American protection. The Antwerp Conference of 1874, hosted by the then-recently unified Belgian-Dutch Co-Dominium, had only therefore formalized what was already taking place.

Few would argue that conditions and standards in German colonies, for example, were indistinguishable from those under French, British, Portuguese or Belgian-Dutch rule. For all the differences, it's generally understood that the rush for control in those times were driven by a combination of national prestige, the need for bountiful resources, personal glory, competing interests, and for some, a quest for personal glory. At any rate, the onset of the 20th Century saw growing clamor among both settlers and native Black Africans for more rights, be it in education or representation. Gradually yet increasingly, the changes and influences brought by the Europeans came to benefit the locals, with even the prospect of self-rule, however distant it may have seemed, being entertained. It's hard to speculate how these developments would have played out to their fullest, however. The Terror would reveal just how fragile this status quo was, especially as many of the Continental powers crumbled. Within the span of a few years, much of the landmass was plunged into chaos. More often than not, the severed territories degenerated into patchworks of warlords, tribal kingdoms, rival settler communities and "White Chieftains," many of which would eventually be subsumed in later decades by the nascent Collectivist Internationale. It would be from those that avoided this chaotic fate that the seeds of the New Great Game emerged.

The Liberian Republic, with support from the American Federation, succeeded in maintaining a semblance of cohesion even as several surrounding colonies crumbled. Under President Edwin King, the nation embarked on a campaign to restore order, only to find that the neighboring peoples being freed in the process were seeing Republican Democracy as preferable to what had come before, eventually leading to the formal establishment of the West African Federation in 1944 and later toppling of the Republic of Bolama's dictatorship in 1960. Around the same time, the Gran Patagonians kept a close eye on the former Spanish colony of Camerún, the fractured pieces of which being overrun by the Reactionary Frente Popular ("Popular Front"). Their support for legitimist factions, particularly the Latin Republicans holding out at the Santa Isabel and San Tome Islands, played a key role in the regime's collapse in 1969, followed by the similar revolt against its counterparts in the Gabon-Kongo Compact three years later. In the span of a few decades, the Twin Republics of the New World had helped establish beacons of liberty in their image, where once were the embers of the Old World.

Meanwhile, the former colonies of British Nigeria and the German Gold Coast banded together in 1948, establishing the United African States, with Benjamin Azikiwe as its first elected President. Instead of simply following the lead of its American and Gran Patagonian allies, however, its "Fathers of Unification" presented an African Republicanism, forged in the years following the Terror that transcended blood and celebrated merit, even while embracing its constituent peoples' heritage. Thus, despite its troubled beginnings, the fledgling union soon rose as a regional power, challenging Reactionaries and Collectivists alike. This has led to its campaigns against the Ténéré Confederation, which became a protectorate in 1969 after the Tuareg-dominated dictatorship was deposed. Which is not to ignore its on-and-off skirmishing with the Sultanate of Ouaddai, which not only spurred the involvement nearby Reactionary regimes, but also sparked a tense rivalry with the "Afrikaner-Mosleyite" Volksfront ("People's Front") of Southern Africa that would persist to this day. Against the odds, even the simmering tensions that threatened to tear the dream of United Africa apart, its stalwart defenders confronted their foes on their own terms.

As for the Union of Southern Africa, which had declared independence from the United Kingdom in 1924, Johannes Gerhardus Hertzog and his successors had not been idle. Seeing the turmoil to the north, as well as the threat posed by both the Internationale and those deemed "degenerate," the Reactionary nation saw an opportunity to prop up compliant warlords and influence (if not set up) any regime that was similar enough to its own. Though these were initially haphazard, with the less stable fiefs either collapsing outright or falling to Collectivists as time went on, after 1942 such efforts not only grew more organized, but had begun bearing fruit. Through the League of Neutral Defiance, the Afrikaners became so successful in swaying the various Reactionaries within their reach that these not only joined the organization as full-fledged members. Whether it be it the secular, militaristic African Salvationists (Union of the Sahel), the Islamic-Reactionaries with pretensions of purely upholding their Prophet's words (Sultanate of Ouaddai), or the clerical, settler-dominant Franco-Mosleyites and their slaves (Free State of Equatoria), they all became near-mirror images of the regime in Bloemfontein.

Then, there are the enduring legacies of the royalists, however much they may have changed over the generations. Portuguese Angola, in particular, was formally handed over to Brazilian suzerainty in 1925, being the only other one of the Lost Nation's colonies that remained loyal to the monarch known to history as King Afonso VII. While much of its surrounding lands succumbed to barbarism and the lure of either Reactionarism or Collectivism over the next few decades, settler and native Angolans alike held the line against the encroaching darkness. The sporadic yet persistent skirmishing between the Forças Armadas Brasileiras ("Brazilian Armed Forces") and Volkstaat Weermeg ("National Defense Forces") along the southern border alone, along with the thwarted attempts by the Volksfront to ferment secessionist sentiment over the years, pale only to the stern vigil kept against the Internationale. More than the strategic value of the territory's resources, it came to represent the Pluricontinental ideals espoused by the Lusitanian Brigandine Throne. Thus, even after the Junta assumed power following the Belem Incident of 1992, and the ever-encroaching influence of Gran Patagonians in local affairs, its loyalty and dedication remain unquestioned, given the alternatives.

This is not to ignore the Free State of Senegal-Lazarie, a New Austrian protectorate comparatively smaller than all others on the African continent. Yet the role this nation's history has played on the region's fate, specifically how its civil war turned out, could not be understated.

The Senegal-Lazarie Civil War: A Pivotal Turning Point in the New Great Game

To understand this significance requires going back to 1944. Vicomte Martin de Lambertye was deposed in a coup after nearly two decades of rule as sovereign of Lazarie (formerly French Senegal), so-called due to deliberate symbolism for one day resurrecting the old homeland. This overthrow, which resulted in the sovereign's death and those of his immediate family, was orchestrated by Marshal Christien de Montfort's Action Europa, a radical movement that opposed attempts to placate both the Black African majority and colonial populace, in the name of preserving the "true" France. With discreet Afrikaner backing, they assumed power and established a Franco-Mosleyite regime, wherein those of "pure" European descent alone were considered citizens, and most others treated as subservient, if not little better than slaves. This Reactionary order, however, did not enjoy a similar degree of success as in Equatoria, whether due to the growing corruption and infighting lurking beneath a superficial facade of unity, or simmering discontent that became worse with ever more excessive force.

By the time of the Marshal's death in 1968, Action Europa had no clear provisions for continuity, paralyzing the government. In the southern reaches of the country, a writer-turned-activist named Léopold Senghor openly declared that the Union National pour Indépendance et Liberté ("National Union for Independence and Freedom"; U.N.I.L.) would oppose the Reactionaries and free what was by then called Senegal-Lazarie as a nation patterned after African Republicanism. Around the same time, a group of colonial-descended reformers and aristocrats led by the aging yet charismatic Antoine de Saint-Exupéry led an armed uprising in the city of Saint-Louis, calling for the fulfillment of what the murdered Vicomte had sought to achieve, eventually calling themselves the Alliance Pour La Justice en Senegal-Lazarie ("Alliance for Justice in Senegal-Lazarie"; A.J.S.L.). Meanwhile, the Gambia River basin became the gathering point for various disgruntled serfs and workers, who had flocked around the young, militant Ibrahim Roche to wage a revolution under the banners of the Mouvement Populaire Pour Le Travailleurs D'Afrique ("Popular Movement for the Workers of Africa"; M.P.T.A.). All the while, the dictator's son, Gen. Albert de Montfort, rallied much of the fractured loyalists under his command, while warning the League of Neutral Defiance of the growing severity of the threat.

The ensuing civil war would mark the most heated phase of the New Great Game. That the increasingly grueling bloodshed coincided with mounting social unrest within the U.A.S. (spurred by extremists believed to be backed by both Reactionaries and Collectivists), as well as heightened regional tensions, including the insurrection in Angola, further underscored this point. While there was no sense of certainty early on, many observers looked to either the U.N.I.L. (aided by American arms and United African reinforcements), or even the Reactionary loyalists (with Southern Africa sending weapons and volunteers through neighboring League members). The prospects of an M.P.T.A. victory, meanwhile, was seen as even more dire. Regardless of whether the Supreme Politburo truly trusted Roche or intended to replace him, it would have would have given a crucial opening for the Collectivist Internationale, by then having all but consolidated much of its possessions on the continent all the way to the remains of the Belgian-Dutch Congo, to exploit. An unforeseen development, though, would not only change the fortunes of those on the battlefield, but also the fate of various Free Nations across the region.

The Royal Dominion of New Austria had discreetly sent advisors to aid Saint-Exupéry in the initial stages, whether due to the latter's claim to the throne or the murdered de Lambertyes' ties with the Habsburgs themselves. Whatever the reasons Archduke Rudolf VII or his officials had, however, it was seen by many within the realm that the escalating conflict could not be ignored. Thus, in 1972 it openly declared its support for the A.J.S.L. Before long, New Austrian supplies and regiments (including soldiers from the Duchy of Kuba) were arriving in droves. These proved instrumental in the capture of Dakar itself the following year and the royalists' expansion further inland, hard-earned as it may have been for the locals. Meanwhile, the old nobleman's efforts in brokering an alliance with the U.N.I.L. also succeeded, providing greater legitimacy to both his and Senghor's mutual cause against their foes, their joint offensives forcing both the M.P.T.A. and Action Europa (along with contingents from the Volkstaat Weermeg) to retreat. It wouldn't be until 1977, following further hardly fought struggles (with the Battle of Fort Basse claiming Roche's life), before the civil war finally came to an end, with the capture of Gen. de Montfort.

After much debate, it was decided that the two victorious parties would form a coalition government under New Austrian protection (formalized in 1978), with Saint-Exupéry being crowned Vicomte not long after. While the aging yet beloved monarch died a few years later, this arrangement proved lasting, as Senghor's democratic reforms proceeded to give an otherwise colonial remnant a distinctly African flavor that benefited all, regardless of blood. The effects of this victory would have wider consequences for the entire region, however. The experiences of the United African soldiers returning from the conflict would play a crucial role in helping an aging Benjamin Azikiwe secure the Acts of Amity, discrediting the extremist voices fostered a rejuvenated U.A.S. Meanwhile, the loss of Action Europa's grip dealt a blow to Volksfront influence, weakening Southern Africa's dominance within the League and contributing to the fall of Ouaddai to African Republicanism in 1986, as well as the final collapse of the Angolan secessonists in 1995. Though remnants of the M.P.T.A. would continue to remain a thorn in the Gambian jungles for years after, the Internationale's advance through Africa was effectively halted.

Thus, while the New Great Game continues on, in many respects a microcosm of the global standoff between the Free World and Collectivism, the peace won at Senegal-Lazarie has helped ensure that the light of liberty and civilization in that corner of the globe remains as bright as ever, against the encroaching madness. Had the conflict played out with any other outcome, be it under the thrall of Reds or power-craving dictators, the present and future would look very different, indeed.

For added trivia, the Senegal-Lazarie Civil War's heavily inspired by the Angolan Civil War and Rhodesian Bush War, complete with the involvement of Afrikaners. The seemingly out-of-context intervention by New Austria, meanwhile, is based on how the Cubans got involved in Angola in real life, albeit for political and ideological reasons ironically opposite of Fidel Castro.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry is, well, very much based on the famed novelist himself, though his aristocratic heritage is highlighted more. While he never wrote something like The Little Prince in the RDNA-verse, he nonetheless avoided his untimely fate in reality, while led to his death in 1944. Léopold Senghor, meanwhile is based largely on his historical counterpart, who's considered a hero, poet, and the "founding father" of Senegal. His willingness to cooperate with Saint-Exupéry is similarly inspired by his real penchant for cooperating with former colonizers rather than antagonizing them.

The de Montforts are based on various French collaborationists and fascists from World War 2, namely Pierre Costantini and Jean Boissel. While the Franco-Mosleyite Reactionarism practiced by Action Europa and their counterparts in Equatoria is similarly patterned after Vichy France, on top of the worse excesses of Congo Free State/Belgian Congo and Rhodesia being amplified. The capital of Louisville is situated where Bambiri, a major market town, would be.

Ibrahim Roche is an amalgamation of Kwame Nkrumah (who in real life was a socialist who became the first president of Ghana), Thomas Sankara of Burkina Faso and Agostinho Neto (Angola's first president and leader of the MPLA), with some elements of Che Guevara.

The photos used for Rudolf VII and Afonso VII are the same people seen in The Throne-in-Exile (AD 2019): RDNA-verse Wikibox and The Braganzas (AD 2019): RDNA-verse Wikibox, but much later in life, reflecting the time period. Meanwhile, Gran Patagonia's president is based on Arturo Frondizi, who's known for instituting "developmentalism" in Argentina and maintaining good ties with the US in spite of Peron during the Cold War.

Pluricontinentalism, though usually associated with Portugal's Estado Novo regime, is an old concept going as far back as the 14th Century, in which the country itself was not confined to the Iberian Peninsula, but encompassing various parts of the world. In the RDNA-verse, it evolved along somewhat different lines, by the "present" coming to mean the unity of the various Free Lusophone peoples under the Lustanian Brigandine Throne.

Jean Lefebvre, the leader of Equatoria is partially based on Rene and Marcel Lefebvre (both of whom were known for their ultratraditionalist views on politics and Catholicism), as well as various figures from the Belgian Congo. Coincidentally, his name is a Frenchified form of the late Ian Smith, Prime Minister of Rhodesia.

In real life, the Ouaddai/Wadai region of Chad was the site of a Sultanate with ties with the Islamic Senussi brotherhood and had held onto power until 1911-12, when the French finally defeated it. In this version of events, the Sultanate managed to survive the loss of French colonial rule but adopted an Islamic take on Reactionarism until the U.A.S. eventually defeated it. While the Union of the Sahel would be more comparable to both the military dictatorships of Cold War-era Mauritania and Algeria.

The Volksfront itself, and Afrikaner-Mosleyite Reactionarism, is an amalgamation of Apartheid South Africa (especially the Ossewabrandwag and more radical elements of the then-ruling National Party) and North Korea's Juche, among others. While Oswald Mosley himself might seem like an unlikely figure to pop up in this alternate TL (though as among the founders of Reactionarism rather than British Fascism as in real life), he wasn't the only one to bear that name. His background as a disgraced baron is also based on his background as part of the nobility.

The Santa Isabel and San Tome Islands are the setting's equivalent to Bioko, Equatorial Guinea and the island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe. As an aside, if you look closely at the flags, they incorporate various elements, such as the Cross of Lorraine (Action Europa), the stars of the Belgian Congo (Equatoria) and in the case of Brazilian Angola, the colonial coat of arms.

Saint-Hillaire is situated where the city of Franceville, Gabon exists in reality. Coincidentally, it has an old colonial-era church called Saint-Hillaire.

Saint Andrew and Bolama are a nod to how Portuguese Guinea (modern Guinea-Bissau) could have wound up in British hands in the 18th Century. In the version of events, that happened, with the colony subsequently being Anglicized not unlike Sierra Leone.

While the Angolan secessionists mentioned echo UNITA (complete with Southern African support), ironically the family that would have spawned Jonas Savimbi is opposed to it.

Here is a map published in 1943 which compared the German occupation of the USSR with the equivalent happening to the US, in order to illustrate the scale of the invasion to American readers.

I like imagining this being an accurate map of US being invaded by Nazis in a AH thought experiment kind of way.

This is really cool and interesting.

I myself might have put the capital a little further west, in Denver, or Colorado Springs, somewhere nested in the Rocky Mountains.

Presumably the capital had to be Detroit cause it's an important centre which is also on the German lines, like Moscow, and gets lots of snow
