Papua? Panama? Palestine?? This is going to take some thought...

(And should I put "North Macedonia" under M for Macedonia? Might offend some Greek members).
I think there's untold potential for Papua. Start with a minor Tu'i Tonga wank, involving greater expansion and sailing west that leads to discovery and subsequent maritime and trade dominance of New Guinea, alongside greater interaction with China leading to the adoption and adaptation of Chinese script. Use that to establish codification of Tu'i Tonga laws that persist in New Guinea after a break-up of the empire, first only for the Polynesian merchant class but then developed to apply to disputes inland. A Polynesian lingua franca and common writing system allows for not only the codification of a consistent legal system but also for the sharing of agricultural techniques developed by the thousands of distinct ethnic and cultural groups living on the island, leading to a revolution in agricultural science and a subsequent scholar class that refines these techniques further, leading to a population boom, leading to a desire to expand outward by a multi-ethnic empire with a knack for integration of local customs and practices ready to swallow large parts of Indonesia and Australia and perhaps even more, possibly as early as 1300.

The New Southern States - 1900 A.D.

Part 1

The Confederate Civil War had been the longest and bloodiest conflict in American history, lasting for a total of eight years and taking an estimated 1,053,000 lives, finally ending with the unilateral Treaty of Richmond on 4 August, 1894. From the ashes and dust of the former Confederate States of America stumbled a series of successor states, all incredibly battered by the death and destruction of its collapse.

Firstly was the United States of America, the age old Union that had barely survived the War of Secession all those distant ages ago. They had reclaimed most of the Upper South, reincorporating the states of Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tallulah, Ozark, and Jefferson, as well as the Cherokee Territory, into the fold. However, not all was glamorous, as mothers and fathers mourned the tens of thousands of casualties taken during the ultimately fallen short Southern Reclamation.

The state most discussed in the years following the fall of the CSA was by far the Socialist Federation of Dixie. The first truly successful socialist state on Earth, Dixie functioned as an anarcho-syndicalist federation of communes, with local syndicates and collectives functioning as the administrative arm of the state. As such, the success of the SFD sent shockwaves throughout the world, sparking discussions of socialist and anarchist theory around the globe. Yet as all of this rabble went on about replicating the successes or destroying the evils of this state went on, it largely remained a destitute pariah wrought by the horrors of war and surrounded by unfriendly nations on all sides.

The most notable of these unfriendly states would be the Free Republic of Libertalia, the successor to what was known during the war as "Free Dixie". Initially created as a united front of virtually all anti-Confederate elements that sought to avoid the rule of the Socialist Federation of Dixie, the group gradually split between the Walkerists under Jonathan Walker, who sought to create a moderate, egalitarian democracy modeled off of the United States, and the Taylorists under Jeremiah Taylor, who sought to create a radically abolitionist black republic modeled off of Haiti. As the war grew longer and bloodier, both the Democratic and Whig Confederacies fell apart, and the United States marched further South, moderates grew fewer and fewer, and the Taylorists ultimately grew to dominate the Black Belt, declaring the Free Republic of Libertalia. However, the Free Republic remained one of the least free countries in the Western Hemisphere under an incredibly impoverished, divided, and undemocratic regime centered around Taylor himself.

The sister state to Libertalia, the Gullah Republic, remained in a much more appealing situation. Supported by US aid throughout the war as a way of dividing the Confederacy even further, Free Gullah quickly became a role model for how to run a successful slave rebellion, with the largely community-oriented Gullah culture facilitating unity among those seeking freedom from the Confederate aristocracy. Unlike Free Tidewater, the United States saw the annexation of Free Gullah as more trouble than it was worth, recognizing the tiny nation as an independent partner within her sphere of influence at the Treaty of Richmond. As what was war aid became reconstruction aid in the years following independence, the Gullah Republic grew to become a middling yet stable democracy in the sea of unrest and conflict that dominated the South.

The opposite mirror image of the Gullah Republic, the Republic of Florida, lies far to her south. The republic was initially created by former Democrats in the southern reaches of Florida who grew dissatisfied with Whig rule from Tallahassee, and gained the means to voice that dissatisfaction via British and Spanish arms and supplies from the Bahamas and Cuba. After the collapse of the Whig government, the Republic quickly swallowed up the remainder of the peninsula and declared a victory for Floridian sovereignty. In all but name though, Florida was a shaky cardboard cutout of a nation only supported by British stilts. The republic was forced to abolish slavery in order to gain this support, devastating their support from Confederate hardliners, but was also far too racist in nature to gain support from anti-Confederates, leaving them with no real power base. Even their capital, Key West, was situated in order to stay close to British supplies and far from the actual nation. The future did not look kind for Florida.

Meanwhile, on the opposite edge of the Confederacy, a not dissimilar situation arose in the Second Republic of Texas. Largely governed by moderate, slavery-neutral Democrats, Texas saw her neighboring Whig states engulfed by slave revolts and was horrified. In order to avoid such a fate, the government of the state declared independence as the Second Republic of Texas, abolishing slavery in her constitution but by no means implementing racial equality. While this quelled most ex-slave resistance, it weakened Texas enough that pro-Whig slave owners in Houston were able to rise up against them, the United States was able to take large western portions of the state, and Mexico was able to reclaim her old border at the Nueces River.

Ultimately, the Whig rebellion would be put down with US support, but not without the loss of large chunks of territory to the US as the state of Jefferson, as well as to Mexico. The Second Republic of Texas remained a stable yet segregated republic, with freedmen becoming slaves once again in all but name under the new system of black codes.

Finally, there was the esoteric Confederacy of Sequoyah, which despite its name had little affiliation with the former CSA. Having gained a large degree of autonomy within the Confederate Indian Territory, and later the Confederate state of Sequoyah, the natives of the Five Civilized Tribes sought to maintain this autonomy as the Confederacy collapsed and the US Army marched over the border. The new Confederacy of Sequoyah was ultimately able to achieve this, but at the price of large territorial concessions north of the Arkansas River in the form of the new Cherokee Territory, reducing the Five Civilized Tribes to four. Resentment for the USA remained high because of this, many natives of the territory still admired the "glory days" they had seen under the CSA, and it was rumored that numerous former Confederate generals had sought refuge there after its fall.

Well, the USA is back in the game. As costly was the Southern Reclamation seemed to be, (A prequel to World War One? ) it is still a major victory for the Union with the retaking of the Upper South. Won't get involved in affairs overseas anytime soon.

A shame about Tennessee losing Memphis, but we got Northen Alabama and so Huntsville was fair trade?

A shame about Libertalia too. If only the mordents had held out, it wound't be a sad parody of Haiti.

The Gullah Republic I'm happy about, more so given it controls both Charleston, and Savanna, doing wonders for their economy.

Alas, poor Florida. Her outcome may have been foreseeable, but the fates wasn't kind to her. Unless they pull a fast one, or the British really want to invest into Florida, it is doom.

It sucks to be Texas. They lost about half, maybe little over half, of their terrority.

Sequoyah...do you want the USA to come marching over the border to finish the job?

How does Dixie conduct its foreign policy? Are there any states with which it's tried to establish normal relations? Its location at the mouth of the Mississippi is clearly important and, I imagine, would make it a natural trading partner for the US, even if they're not particularly fond of the behemoth to their north.

I like this attitude! :D

However, that poor lil Siam looks like doing worse than otl (at least in terms of size)

1: I mean the reason Sweden is in the great powers list isn't Sabaton. The reason why I decided to wank them and therefore made them a great power was however Sabaton (Carolus Rex, most importantly).

2: With Ethiopia and Thailand I just wanted to say why they were independent and not colonized, wanting to voice (well, type) my opinion about the two countries during the colonial era. I didn't mean to say they were amongst the greatest powers in the world. It just happened to look like I included them in the list because I didn't clearly stop the list.

indeed. unfortunately the Armenian red looks too similar to the Latin red

I would change that. Don't let official AH.com color schemes get in the way of map readability (I would also change Georgian so it doesn't look like a close relative of Cyrillic).

Really cool map though; I'd love to see it extended to the whole world.

Arabic script also looks very similar to Cyrillic in the map.

Or thinking anyone is going to be fooled by calling yourself "Alucard."

But this is a map thread, not a snark thread. Another WIP: a world map for this scenario - https://www.alternatehistory.com/forum/threads/map-thread-xii.307632/page-440#post-10111256

Aside from almost uninhabited Patagonia, "SW Africa" is New England's only remaining notasmallisland colony , which they're holding onto due to diamonds, a fair sized white settler population and not too many black people.

I’m a bit late, (I haven’t been on the website that often lately), but thank you for expanding on that map I made! It looks great so far

I'm doing North Korea under N and South Korea as just Korea under K, because I don't think there's enough of a historical break between South Korea and previous Koreas for it to get a separate wank (and then I'd have to do _three_ Korea maps. :coldsweat: )

If you do want to wank Korea, I have a few potential starting points to suggest (just to get your mind working if you didn't have any plans):

Goguryeo could be a good place to start considering how much land both inside and outside of OTL Korea it controlled or if you want Korean culture to be more widespread and lead to later unification of a larger Korean sphere along the lines of Germany or Italy, you could change some things about Balhae/Bohai or Buyeo and the Koreanic kingdoms, albeit these may be to early to get any kind of recognizable Korea .

Here's a low-ish quality map of Buyeo and the other "Proto Korean" kingdoms, so you get an idea of the extend of Early Korean settlement outside of Korea:
You can see the three kingdoms beginning to form here.

proto korean kingdoms.jpg

[edit: also, not my map, found here just shows the extend of Proto Korean settlement in a simple map]

Yun Gwans northern expedition is also a possibility. I used it as the POD for my, admittedly not to great, first TL. Depending on which sources you believe, he may have expanded only into NKs modern panhandle (long before Sejong the great would incorporate the region) or he may have seized large tracts of land in Manchuria (which makes for a bigger wank), but he was forced to withdraw because of a new king being crowned and his enemies in court saw to it that all of his work was undone.

You might also be interested in altering King Sejong's Invasion of the Tsushima islands. You could have him take further advantage of Japan's weakened and divided state in the Sengoku period, though I would be careful not to make Korea overstretch itself initially or become so scary that it stimulates unification.

The later you go, the harder it is to wank Korea, as their position as vassals gets more and more entrenched and they rely more and more on their protectors, which stifles development. The , for lack of a better name "Korean Meiji" is a common POD for Koreawanks, though it tends to ignore the fact that Japan was largely able to develop outside of China's political influence because it is so separated which allowed it to get to the point of the Meiji resotration and something similar would be harder, albeit not impossible to pull off in Korea.
