I gotta say, that map makes me question the consensus that the Kaiserreich are the good guys!

I thought that the only consensus was that a non-civil war United States cloaked in immense power and liberty is the only force of good in a world of both reactionary and revolutionary tyranny?

:p

Hey guys, this is my first post, and as a fan of Byzantine/Roman Timelines, so I made a Industrialized Roman Empire, just before the colonisation period. This is what if Rome had industrialised during the Pax Romana. This also involves the containment of Slavic migration, the rise of eastern empires and future Nordic conquests of North America.

I call it the 'Era of Glory', with a looming colonial race with Han China, Second Sassanid Persia and to some extent Slavia. P.S. I know its not the best, but this is my first attempt.

I'm always a sucker for some industrial Rome action. And a good first map as well! Very clean and uncluttered.

Thanks! I even plan on maybe designing some Roman Industrial ships. I also plan on doing the colonial period at some point.

I personally love large scale empires so this is a perfect timeline for myself, as it has Europe, Russia, The Middle East and Asia all unified.

nice concept, although I would suggest using a newer base map as that one looks quite outdated.

this is a link to map resources.
this and this are links for historic maps.
this is a link for blank physical maps.

hope they help :)

Thank you so much! :) I always just typed something like 'map blank template rivers' and hoped I'd find something. I shall use these from now on!

Tell me more about this map. What is Rome's religion? How are they dealing with this Slavic migration?

What is this Second Sassanid Persia and Slavia?

I certainly wouldn't mind Franklin Roosevelt whacking the Kaiser with his wheelchair!

Thought you wouldn't ask ;).
Rome is still Roman Pagan, however christians are tolerated as long as they pledge allegiance to the Emperor, and as a minor placation they often call him 'God's Regent on Earth'. Christians are a large part of the eastern Mediterranean culture, however the west is more interested in Paganism.

Slavic migration was dealt with by force. Due to the Roman development of basic guns and their adaptation of their warfare to include a gladius, scutum and arquebus in which they fire as the enemy approaches, similar to the use of the pila, then the crouching romans in front hold the shield wall and swords as the enemy charge. Due to several large scale battles with these new tactics and other basic industrial assistance, they were beaten back across the Danube and Elbe, later expanding to the Olbe after more conflict. The Romans are happy with this current containment. Czechs and pomerianians live under the banner of the romans, however by this point they have been pacified.

Slavia is the combined 'nation state' (Bunch of smaller chieftains for each tribe e.g. polan, croat etc. with a Great Chief (basically a Emperor/King). They speak a mix of old slavic languages merged together, although as it's not very centralized currently so the languages all have heavy dialects, making it hard to be understood across the country. While they are just a bit more than a collection of tribes... that's still a lot of tribes.

After the Sassanids were defeated by the Arabs, the remaining members of the Sassanid dynasty fled north into the region of turkmenistan today. After several fracturious wars by the arabs against the industrialised romans, the Sassanids saw an opportunity. They made a pact with the turkmeni, in exchange for fighting for the Sassanid's Kavadh, they would be freed on the creation of their taking. They eventually won the war, Kavadh was crowned King of Kings and the Turkmeni were free. They later established a emirate of their own with an alliance to the Second Sassanids.

If anyone's interested I will answer more questions!:)

I see.

What about life in Rome? (By region: Egypt, Italian Peninsula, Gaul, Britain, Germania, Hispania, Greece and Balkans.)

What is Islam like in this world?

What of the Jews?

What of the Nordic Union?

Does Rome has any planes to also head to North and South America to beat the Nordic?

Roman, Arab, and Nordic trade India and China?

Brilliant first map! Keep up the good work. I do have some points though.

Svalbard and Novaya Zemlya were not colonized until the late 19th and early 20th century. I think there would have been a lot of colonization before that.

Africa and the Americas are impossibly sparse; there have always been states in both.

I doubt Turkestan would be an Emirate in this scenario. Emir is an Arabic title, and with Persian dominance over the Arabs there probably wouldn't be much spread of Arab culture.

Both the shape and name of Ayutthaya are unlikely. You've essentially split Cambodia in half, not to mention the (admittedly possible, if unlikely) conquest of mainland Malaysia. Also, the kingdom of Ayutthaya was named after the city, which was not founded until the 1350s.

I don't think "Nordic Union" is a good name for a united Fennoscandia in this scenario. The word Nordic itself is Germanic in origin, and those languages' development would have been significantly altered with a surviving Rome.

Life in Rome? In the western provinces e.g. Britannia, Germania, Gaul, life is by far better than it was during the medieval times or even in Antiquity. Due to the intellectual and architectural wonders of Rome, the regional capitals for the provinces have rapidly improved with their new technology. Trier is a thriving Roman city with elements of its former tribal past, with its Military school being one of the greatest in the world, let alone the Roman Empire. The culture of these regions is heavily Romanised now, people see themselves as Romans rather than Britons or Germans by now. Life spans have drastically increased, on average a person would live to 42, compared to the 30's and 29's of the Medieval Era and Old Pax Romana respectively. Almost every city in Italy has been developed massively, Napoli, Capua, Mediolanium and Genua are all large cities of between 400-800 thousand, with Rome herself having around 2 million. In the east, Greek culture is still strong. although its slow merge with Roman is hard to ignore, texts in Greek have been translated to Latin, allowing even the average Briton or German to listen to the words of Aristotle.

Islam, while not as strong as in our timeline, still dominates arabia, central asia and Persia. Islam is very similar apart from that, still has a sense of Jihad if a muslim nation is invaded, however due to there only being two truly powerful muslim nations, and those two nations having an alliance it isn't at all surprising.

Jews are a large minority group in Judea, after the Great Jewish revolt the Jewish people and their respective leaders decided they couldn't win a war with Rome, and instead decided to spread jewish culture and tradition as much as they could, to try and make the region more God's province on earth. Jew's are a relatively respected minority, especially in our timeline.

The Nordic Union, while that name needs revising is a more centralised version of Slavia, with a 'Great King' as their ruler. After the defeat of the Danes most tribes saw the danger, with the Sveas taking centre stage to the unification. It took a while, and due to Rome being distracted with Slavia the unification wasn't slowed down by Rome, so in the end its only been unified about a 100 years before the start of the colonial period, with the norse discovering America. They are norse, with some slavic, roman and christian minorities.

They only just discovered them, however with the industrialised ships and better weaponry Rome will probably colonise very quickly, especially considering how in our timeline it was fast with only England France and Spain (sorry Netherlands) taking north america. There isn't a specific plan, they are still coming up with ideas, however in the end it might just be a rush.

Romans definitely trade, however they do not like to trade ideas. Envoys would rather die than give up Roman steamwork and guns. Norse have good trade relations with slavia, and the fact they've noticed the Second Sassanids at all is impressive, although trade relations are just starting. China dominates east asia even more than our timeline. If you see a ship in East Asian waters trading you'd probably be right to say its Chinese. The Indian principalities trade with almost anyone, whether Roman, Sassanid or Chinese, however each one has its own preferable partners. Finally, the Gupta trade lots with the Romans, hoping to ally them incase of a Sassanid Conflict.

Holy jesus that was alot of writing.
