Skeptics laughed at the prospect. The great America,
collapsing?!
President Bob Smith (this is just a placeholder name, ideas are welcome) and his wing-men laughed uncontrollably.
The year is 2019. It's already been quite eventful- Belgium fell apart; Flanders became independent, Walloonia joined France, the German Community and a few border-areas joined Germany. Brussels became EU territory.
Italy was also the victim of a ripple effect. Flanders's independence gained more supporters for the proposed Republic of Padania. But Italy was able to prevent this- until in mid-June, when Italy's Mezzogiorno defaulted. This threatened to bring down the north with it. Sicily, one of the poorest areas of the country, declared independence to try and stay afloat, on June 31st, 2014. One week later, Padania followed suit. The problem was, nobody recognized it. It bribed Austria and France into recognizing them by handing over South Tyrol and the Aosta Valley, respectively.
For over four years, Russia has been toying around with Ukraine. In 2014, they invaded and conquered the Crimea. In 2015, they took some of the south coast and northern border areas and installed the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics as Russian puppets. The next year, they took disputed Georgian territories and signed the Union Treaty with Belarus- integrating it into the Russian Federation as a republic.
It only got better for Russia when they sent troops into (what was left of) the Ukraine to install yet another puppet. This time, NATO responded, sending troops in on the side of Ukraine. Both had met but didn't fire, and Kiev was surrounded. NATO and Russia signed a treaty, splitting it in to pro-west West Ukraine (which was made from the existing government) and pro-Russia East Ukraine- with a neutral zone Kievan Republic in the middle. Borders were drawn, but nonetheless Russia still claimed bits of western Ukraine. A coup d'etat by Turkish nationalist in Ankara and Istanbul killed many and installed a pro-Russian government in Turkey- which led to a proxy war resulting in most of the Thrace being handed to Greece and Bulgaria.
In 2017, more alarms sounded when a civil war erupted between Christian and Muslim Nigerians and nearby countries were also attacked by the latter. This sparks a new wave of migration, with at least 10,000 people going to neighbors and South Africa, and another 2,000 going to the UAE.

During a seemingly peaceful May 2, 2019, president Smith receives a phone call from the mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti (whom won a second term election). He says there are large scale riots with armed people holding signs about the "Bear Flag Republic" and other issues like illegal immigration and the economy, which had defaulted a month earlier. The last line he said:
"They're getting close to city hall- oh boy, they're storming inside! Get the guard down here---" *sounds of handcuffs and rope tying are head*
On April 17th of that year, the US economy defaulted. It was so big that nobody was able to bail it out and poor Canada went down with it.
Fast forward two months, and America, Ukraine, Nigeria, and the middle east are all a hot mess. After the Americans pulled out, Kurdistan was fighting alone and made peace with ISIS. The Kurds were left alone, and ISIS annexed most of Iraq and all of Syria, except for the Antioch Republic (which despite its name does not control the Antioch area
or Aleppo, for that matter) which makes BFFs with Lebanon; and the Republic of Lower Syria, which controls a sliver of the former country's south.
In North America, there's an even hotter mess. America was unable to do much for the states after the default, so
most of the states believe
"Well, if the great America can't help us, why not fly solo?"
People believe the big winners here were New England, Cascadia, and California.
New England established itself after the six states there decided they needed to stick together for survival. They set up camp in Boston, Massachusetts, and made money off their forestry and especially the world-famous New England clam chowder and other seafoods. They also "saved" the Maritimes, Newfoundland, and St. Pierre & Miquelon.
This is an abridged description- to do the whole thing would take a while! More on this later.
Fun notes: The areas outside of the "contiguous" zone of US control are referred to as Union territories because they decided to stay in camp. These are Georgia, Nevada, most of Montana, the Dakotas, Minnesota, and the area of Alabama that Georgia took.
Many areas have naming disputes, mostly in an attempt to show superiority. The New English state of Newfoundland contrasts with Canadian-controlled Labrador which retains the name of Newfoundland and Labrador; the Republic of Pennsylvania contrasts with US-controlled Pennsylvania which retains the name Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; the Cascadian province of British Columbia contrasts with the same name Canadian province, the Midwestern Condominium territory of Ontario contrasts with the same name Canadian province among others.
This is the world... the world of Twenty Twenty!
