Here's a map of Rosalia's provinces. Rosalia is a fictional country set in the fictional world of Drema, a modern take on fantasy.

Rosalia's main language is *Spanish. The reason why names lack the additions to them is because I was lazy. Assume the additions are actually there.

If you notice, the far North has very non-Spanish sounding names. It is because those names come from the time when the Icosians ruled the North. The Icosians were an *Icelandic-speaking people who were adept at magic and existed peacefully with Barsanian immigrants (proto-Rosalians) until some chose to use magic to make the Barsanians slaves. Use of magic there rapidly got out of hand as they used it in unimaginable ways that historians today are stunned by. The Icosians' use of magic mutated them into a new species that quickly saw humans as mere slaves and chose to use them as entertainment, often raping them, creating hybrids. Repetation ensured some hybrids were born (most were stillborn or aborted via natural medicine). Eventually those hybrids led the rebellion that ended Icosian tyranny. Shortly after that, the Icosians just disappeared, with nobody knowing where they are. Northern people tend to have Icosian blood in them, being the descendants of hybrids.

The island to the west of the mainland is Thalcel, and it is primarily *English-speaking and ethnically Verusan (a country to the far west). Loyalty and which crown to pay allegiance to (Rosalia or Verusa) has always been a contentious issue there, with politics being quite Catalan-y.

The southern province of Laranja is named because of its' plethora of orange trees. It is called Laranja, not Naranja because of influence from Maladul (the country to Rosalia's south) creating a distinct dialect of *Spanish (*Portuguese! :p).

In *Spanish (Rosalian, as it is called ATL), when you refer to a province, you say la provincia before it. Otherwise you mean what it's named after. Thalcel and the Icosian-named Northern provinces are exceptions for obvious reasons, as is Laranja outside Laranja (but people tend to use la provincia for that as well). If you're in a conversation with someone about provinces, you can drop the la provincia because it's clear what you're referring to.

Meaning of all the provinces' names...

Hielo: "Ice" in Rosalian. Named because of the icy sea it is in. Did not have an Icosian name because they never discovered it.
Vatlend: Shortened form of Icosian words meaning "Water Lands", named because of obvious reasons.
Nevada: "Snowfall" in Rosalian because this region tends to have heavier-than-normal snowfall. Was created long after the Icosians disappeared.
Skipti: "House" in Icosian. Not "home" because the Icosians tended to be very nomadic before the Magic. Nevada was formerly a part of this province.
Rikivil: Shortened form of Icosian words meaning "realm of the will", because this is where the Magic affected the landscape the most.
Verdura: "Greenery" in Rosalian because this area historically and still is quite plentiful when it comes to trees. Think of Cascadia for an OTL analogue.
Camino: "Pathway" in Rosalian because this area was historically used as the main route between the eastern and western halves by pioneers.
Thalcel: Information Here Hopefully Soon.
Paraíso: "Paradise" in Rosalian. The result of a marketing strategy that successfully sold the dry region to people. Technology eventually improved it.
Valle: "Vale" in Rosalian. The place is one big vale, with its western and eastern borders being determined by mountains. Camino was formerly part of Valle.
Corona: "Crown" in Rosalian. The place was the old lands of the Kingdom (before it massively expanded) and were the former Crown Lands.
Amapola: "Poppy" in Rosalian. The first settlers here discovered a vast field full of yellow poppies. They named the land after the flower.
Latón: The official name of the province, it tends to be called Islas de Latón in casual speak. "Brass" in Rosalian, because brass was the main resource here.
Bahía: "Bay" in Rosalian, named for obvious reasons.
Montaña: "Mountain" in Rosalian, the place is dominated by the coming together of the mountain ranges that made the Valle a vale.
Lavanda: "Lavender" in Rosalian, the lavender shrub was thriving here when the first Barsanian colonists discovered the region.
Tempesta: An archaic variation of "Storm" in Rosalian, the area were historically storm-prone and so that inspired the name for the region.
Piedra: "Stone" in Rosalian, the bay that were first settled were dominated by stones and rocks.
Laranja: "Orange" in the Laranja "dialect" of Rosalian (many say it's a full language of its own), named after the orange trees that dominate the region.

Bellota: "Acorn" in Rosalian, it was named after the acorn that the Dama (the Messiah-analogue) planted in the ground and then said the Parable of the Acorn (basically something about growth and redemption). That same acorn (eventually a tree) became a very holy spot for Celestiality (Celestismo in Rosalian) the main religion of the Kingdom. Around that acorn grew the grand city of Bellota, which could be said to be a Jerusalem. The capital city of Rosalia.

I like the Spanish take on fantasy, you don't see that much. Of course as a Californian I look at your map and immediately think "Mexico".:p I'm not imagining the tad bit of ASOIF influence, am I?

A question to Iggies. I noticed that there were many many county divisions in your maps. Did you use a base map or something when you made it? I have tried to come across good maps of Europe with subdivisions in different countries. Subdivisions are very relevant when making alternate maps.

The subdivisions drawn with tiny squares found in most European countries were already there. I used one of Valdemar's Europe base maps. However, the subdivisions in the Soviet Union that denote different republics were not there, with the exception of the Ukrainian and Belarusian SSRs. Unfortunately, none of the different sizes for the pencil tool matched up with the squares that were already there, so I had to take the smallest size down and draw each little square individually.

It was hellish.

There is. You got that right. There's the Valle/Vale, Tempesta/Stormlands, Brass/Iron Islands and even a region called the North.

The Icosians were even based off the White Walkers! :p

Does any part of Spain match with Fluttershy? "Timid" isn't something I associate with Spaniards much.
Well Fluttershy does tend to get pissed when very upset, so I imagine there is something there. Maybe Galicia, or southern Spain? The only one I agree with on there is Portugal, since the Portuguese have a history of being adventurous and bold.
