Map of the Fortnight: Main Discussion Thread

I have. Not to spoil the surprise, but the map will be focusing on the most radical state in the the former Confederacy. The Florida coastline always puts me off of doing maps of the South, but I'm going to have to do it twice for this map. Hopefully it won't put me off of finishing this one.

Maybe I'll have to change my plan if you're also doing a bat-shit Florida

Florida's not the focus of my map, so don't feel the need to change on my account. I'm not familiar enough with Florida's history outside of the panhandle or the history of communism in the state to focus on it.

I have two ideas:
  1. Ashes, Ashes, We All Fall Down: Make a map of the world that has gone straight to hell with civil wars, conflicts between nations, genocide, ethnic cleansing, and revolutions across every part of the world are happening all at once.
  2. I Have Become Death, The Destroyer of Worlds: Show a map of a nation that is armed with nuclear weapons and/or other WMDs.

I want to nominate these two.

If we are nominating ideas, I have a few for the next round. I suspect one or two of these might have been used before, but anyway:
(Titles shamelessly stolen from the Australian national anthem, which is where I got the ideas)

  1. Girt by Sea: Make a map of an island nation.
  2. Abounds in Nature's Gifts: Make a map of a country especially rich in a particular natural resource.
  3. Renowned of All the Lands: Make a map of a nation that is generally well-regarded by others.
  4. For Those Who've Come Across the Seas: Make a map of a nation or region with high levels of immigration.

Here's a proposal I thought of:
I don't have a cool name: Make a map of a nation which has many, many irredentist claims.

Examples include pre-WW1 Italy and the Megali Idea.

With no entries submitted so far, the contest period for MotF 185: The Bonnie Red Flag is hereby extended by a week to October 14th!

I'm just going through some text on the post. I should have the map up by tomorrow at the latest. I'm looking forward to seeing others' hard work!

Congratulations to @Dr.Kafka for winning MotF 185 with "Confederacy of Socialist Republics"!

I see we have one very interesting entry already for MotF 186 - anyone else got one in progress?

I have a contest idea in mind for 187, but I am looking for suggestions for the round after that. 188 will be a POD-specific round, so what are some scenarios that you would like to see covered?

I'm working on a 186 entry

perhaps some of these ideas might be interesting?

The Blood of the Martyrs -
have a successful 1848 revolution somewhere in Europe (POD between 1838 and 1848)
The World without Alex - Alexander the Great dies at the Battle of Gaugamela
So Long, Palmetto State! - The Nullification Crisis goes hot
Sting like a Bee - make a Great Power Egypt with a PoD of 1815-1829

Conquer By Thee: Constantine the Great never converts to Christianity and never spreads the religion across Europe
Beyond the Sunset: Christopher Columbus' fleet is wrecked by a storm, delaying the discovery and colonisation of the Americas
Remember, Remember the Fifth of November: The Gunpowder Plot manages to succeed in killing off Parliament and the King of England
Of Pigs and Potatoes: America and Britain end up going to war after the San Juan Boundary Dispute takes a violent turn
Good Bye, Mr. Lenin: Fanny Kaplan successfully assassinates Vladamir Lenin during the wake of the Bolshevik Revolution

With only two entries so far, MotF 186: The Visible Hand has been extended by one week until November 4th.

(No one has asked so far, but in case anyone is curious, my rule is to extend if there are less than three entries after the first two weeks, and to put up the poll regardless of how many entries there are once we get to the three-week mark).

Also, thank you to everyone who has suggested topics for MotF 188! I'm still taking suggestions, so feel free to propose a topic or mention a couple that you like.

American Jewel - Either show a Raj-esque colony in the Americas, or a Raj-esque region owned by the United States of America (i.e., Raj-esque referring to the manner in which the British Raj was governed, with multiple polities under British control all combined together into one region)
Rule, Brytenlond - A world where William the Conqueror's invasion in 1066 does not occur, or is a failure: create a map of a world where Great Britain remained Anglo-Saxon.
Dominion of Tobacco - Create a map of a world where the Southern States remained loyal to Great Britain, and became dominions of Great Britain following the War of Independence
An Eagle Resplendent - Create a map showing a post-World War One republican Germany that is a functional entity that does not fall to political and economic distress and unrest
Ink and Paper - A map of a world where the German Confederation remains in power, Bismarck never enters politics and the Austro-Prussian War never occurs.
For this Moment to be Free - A map of a country that has just ended an era of racism (such as the Jim Crow Era in the USA or the Apartheid in South Africa)
