Urbem lateritiam accepit, mamoream relinquit - Show the area of an OTL city not founded by the Romans as though it were founded by the Romans (not the best wording I know, but as an example, show the city of Boston as it would look as it would as a Roman colony city)

Making The Best Of An Awkward Situation
Make a map of the repurposing of an abandoned project.

I like the "abandoned project" part - I think requiring it to be repurposed in some way might be a little too restrictive.

An Alternate Alternate
Make a map from an alternate timeline to an alternate timeline.

So, the classic "CSA wins TL191 GWII"? This could be doable, though I think I would add a requirement for each entry to cite the original timeline, unless it's the contestant's own work.

  • The Ever Nameless, Faceless 'They': Make a map where a conspiracy theory turns out to be true;
  • Living Off Bread Alone: Make a map detailing the consequences of a key figure for a religion not having a faith;
  • It's The Simple Things: Make a map showing a traditionalist, anti-machinery community in a modern world. PoD: After 1850.

As others have mentioned, conspiracy theories can be a bit of a tricky topic. I could see that one inspiring some fun maps, but I could also see it ending in disaster. The other two both seem plausible.

Fun idea, but I think this would end up being too specific. "Romans in an unexpected place" has been done before with MotF 142; we could run that one again sometime if people like the general concept.

Congratulations to @lock for decisively winning MotF 173 with "Post-War Alliances of Europe 1966"! This is his fifth Map of the Fortnight victory, which makes him an official Map Ace! (His first was in MotF 87 - you can check out that and other past entries through the Wiki page!)

In other business, some of the topics I am considering for MotF 175 are as follows:
  • The Fruited Plain - Make a map related to the agriculture of a country or region.
  • Making The Best Of It - Make a map of a place, project or other endeavor that has been abandoned by the group that started it.
  • It’s The Simple Things - Make a map showing a group, community, or place which has deliberately rejected certain technologies.
If there's one of these that you think would be cool, or if you have another suggestion for a future contest, post it here!

Finally, we still have a week left in the current round - anyone have an entry in progress?

Woo-hoo! Leaderboard!

Also, MotF 87: That was a while back. "Try our Muffins!" Ha ha!

Anyway, I do have an idea. We'll see if I have a chance to get it done.

Looking back at the early rounds, a lot of them were more specific than what we have now. Maybe it would be interesting to go back to such a model, to see different 'takes' on similar scenarios.

I think the main problem is that almost all direct, specific premises for MOTF rounds have already been covered.

Yeah, I've noticed that. If there's a significant interest in trying one like that, I could probably come up with one for a future round.

We can always repeat. There's no rule that says we can't. I think we've done three mass transit map contests.

However, if a topic is too specific, it has a potential to limit the number of people who will participate.

You Never Know Where You Stand
Make a map of a neutral nation.

(Thank Zapp Brannigan and Futurama for the title.)

That's certainly been the philosophy for a while. I think the counter-argument is that giving a fairly scenario-specific challenge ("Show a world where Alexander the Great went west instead of east") narrows things down and gives a clear starting point for people who might just want to make a map and not have to work out a POD and backstory.

What about an image prompt? Either a painting, or a historical map with the caption cropped out, and the challenge would be to do a cover/context/something to do with the region.

I agree that a more specific prompt would be better for both getting submissions and thinking of them, but perhaps a compromise can be made; alternate between the two.

Not sure what the best balance will be, but I'm thinking 176 may be a test run for a more specific type of challenge.

An interesting idea, though I'd worry that with a visual prompt, a lot of the resulting entries could end up looking similar...

Anyway, it's been a long day, but new threads are up!
