Yeah, I agree that, with a safe and profitable route to India, the Portuguese would have no interest in Brazil - specially if the discovery of America is delayed, or at least the discovery of Gold and Silver in the Americas.
(oh, and that's a little historic misconception: the portuguese pratically never producted coffee in Brazil; it was only profitable after the Brazilian independence, in the XIXth century, when they started to produce it in São Paulo and Minas Gerais, rather than in the northern states. In the portuguese times, Sugar and Cotton were the main cultures, by far.)
Yeah, I'd agree with that Portugal would have set up a lot of colonies for resupplying on the way to India, and the riches would delay interest in Brazil.
And hmm, I never knew that. What about the Ivory coast?
