MAP CONTEST: General Discussion.

Just posted my effort now, what do people reckon?

Have to say, I've never really explored the possibilities of using vectors to make maps (I've generally either gone the traditional colouring in a .gif route or editing a map much as I would a photo) but having just tried it is really is an incredibly easy way to get something that looks good. Very simple to edit as well- changing colours is a breeze and until you rasterise it outlining is as easy as adding a layer blending effect. If you have photoshop or something similar it's really worth exploring.

Just as a vague thought, would anyone be interested in a tutorial?

i havent used vecors to create maps before. I must say, i realy like your map, and demand that you write that timeline immediatly.

i would be interested in a tutorial, as so far all i do is just create the outlines in paint, and import them into photoshop.

I'm totally diggin' that map, EdT! Cool names and color scheme.

Right now I'm just hoping I will be able to get mine done in time . . .

Glad you like the map- as for the TL, I might write something a little more in-depth if the mood strikes me. Essentially the PoD as far as Earth is concerned is in the 1850's, with the discovery of a compound called "Cavorite", which negates gravity and allows the easy construction of spaceships. The invention's guarded jealously, and by the time the secret of the compound's synthesis leaks out the British have already gained a large lead in the space race.

Beyond that, I haven't thought much further- The overall tone is meant to be "Harry Flashman versus the Martian Horde" with a healthy dose of Lovecraft should the Royal Navy ever explore as far as Pluto (or should I call it Yuggoth?) or arcaeologists poke around the Venusian ruins too much...

Hmm... Yes, I think I will take this a bit further. Have run into another slight standstill with A Greater Britain.

Right, Ok- I'll do a tutorial then.

 I see that, as I suspected, this has become a contest to see who can come second to EdT (a bit like the Lancre Witch Trials :D )

Great work EdT. I had suspected it had something to do with cavorite from 'The First Men in the Moon' when I saw the name Cavor on your map. I too would like to see stories/timelines based on this.

EdT just raised the bar... probably above my head.

I'm going to try to make a map based off of the appearance of the planet Dezo in Phantasy Star II... hopefully that won't be a problem? (I've already started drawing graphics for it, so I hope it's not a problem...

Nope go to town.

Like the textures Thande! :D

Cool map too, I'd long suspected that it'd take more then the oncoming North Atlantic to stop the Northern Irish from fighting amongst themselves

Thanks.

Indeed, and of course the refugees being driven up there from the sunken parts of the ROI have only served to exacerbate the tensions...

BTW, the "Oracle" ruling over southern Ireland is supposed to be one of those megalomaniacal all-powerful computer A.I.s you get in these post-apocalyptic scenarios (the ultimate result of the Irish software industry :D )

I hate my monitor- I did some graphics for my map at school, and emailed them home, and many of them are even unseeable here...

The Travails of Imajin's Monitor...

I suppose you've tried playing with the contrast knob?
