MAP CONTEST: General Discussion.

That's cool that Scarecrow and I used the same base map; it really does make it easier to compare and contrast. Good idea for future map contests, but next time I'm entering, not judging, dammit! :D

heh, thats funny cos next time I want to judge not enter:D

11 each, damn this is close.

Perhaps we should sticky the contest thread so that it doesnt keep slipping down the page?

Very sweet maps, both of you!

Diamond, I love the crosshatched border, TL and the font - however, I felt that in places (Such as Spain), the text was too small, leaving too much blank area.

Even though it was close, Scarecrow got my vote. I love his color scheme, capitals and I'm a sucker for internal German divisions.

I can't wait until the next one comes around! Speaking of which, when does the Judges plan on hosting the next one?

Yeah, I wasn't happy with that either. The plan was originally to have the flag of each major nation displayed on the nation itself, but I couldn't come up with a Spanish flag I was happy with, and then i forgot to resize and center the text. Oh well. :(

No, I think you misunderstood me - I liked the crosshatched borders :D Thought it was unique, although I would have put another color as the background.

Perhaps, just for giggles and laughs, you could make these changes and post them in the map thread?

So - when does the 2007 cartography season begin?

LOL

I like your eagerness there LoneAmigo! :D

I was hoping to make this a yearly thing where we started like we did sometime in late October/early November.

If there is enough interest we could certainly have more rounds, etc.

But I believe Othniel had something he wanted to try so I don't want to interfere with that until he has had a go. Othniel how's that coming by-the-way?

If he has dropped the idea we could make the contest a year long deal with much longer 'work time' but with that much more difficult PoDs.

So, seems about the time to have an Offical Map Contest again . . .

Err...we already had one this year. Back in May.

I don't mind starting one up in January, but I'd kind of like to see this as an annual thing for the board.

What does the rest of the board think? (And I'd better see a Scarecrow response in this here thread mind you!)

I wouldn't mind having one soon. It will give me a good chance to practice my vector skills.

Ah, forgot about that, nevermind.

Though maybe having two a year would be fine, IMHO.

Well I don't mind having it semi-annually if enough people want it to be. We could have a winter and summer map contest. What does everyone think?

Ah good to see you responded so soon Scarecrow. :D

We could start the winter one as soon as we get some judges I suppose.

Sounds good to me, although you have the seasons back to front.

I want to compete this time rather then judge, but I also have some good ideas for challenges, so its a struggle:(

Ah yes...um to respect our brethren from where the seasons are opposite we shall go with the beginning and mid year map contests. Of course this will likely alienate those not following the western calendar but I can't please everyone.

Perhaps we can plan it now, and host it after the holidays?

Winter and summer competitions sounds great to me.

Planning is a well and good but I need at least two other judges. Preferably a board member who has been around awhile and at least has made a TL or a map of substance.

I love map contests. Biannual sounds good. But I just like to spectate and vote.

I encourage as many people to participate in as many rounds as they can, but spectators are welcome. :)
