Map Challenge: Mexican Victory in Mexican American War

I know it's highly unlikely, but what if? Seriously, the Mexicans would have definitely made colonies. Once the Mexicans start winning, foreign powers would have gladly helped take down the USA. Post your own maps and get started!

If Mexico won, it would be a stalemate at best and a minor victory at better for Mexico/worst for America.

I don't see Balkanization to any major degree. The United States were by the 1840's firmly united. The only difference in national identity was a north/south divide. The South would also not have gone to France as Louisiana was the only state with any ties, and I doubt France would invade the US. New England would also have no reason to secede and rejoin England, nor would Britain have reason to invade the sovereign US on a whim. Were this a Third Anglo/American War as could have happened over Oregan, perhaps. But just because the US didn't conquer Mexican territories, no. Also, British South America would be a major misnomer. British North America was called so because it was in North America, not because it was Northern most on the continent.

Mexico on that map would also bring up a whole slew of issues ranging from how Mexico could manage to occupy that land to the fact that the Oregon dispute between the US and UK would be Ex-Deus-Machina'd away.

Why is British South America not in South America? And why is British South America an ally of Mexico when British North America is not? And why is a large part of Mexico not divided into provinces?

And how does Mexico end up with Hawaii? And how does it end up with the same border with Canada that the United States had?

If Mexico didn't lose, it would only survive, maybe with a bit more of its land in the future cession area left to it if not just all of the land it already had. It wouldn't have gone on any conquest of the US.

So here's maps of a few situations I think possible for post-war.:

1) Mexico manages a ceasefire or stalemate and the war ends with no gains. Mexico manages to reabsorb Texas.

2) The war ends in stalemate/ceasefire with Mexico forced to give up claims to Texas. Texas in turn may end up a state, or remain a republic should the Texans have some reason not to join or should it be in the treaty for it to remain independent to curtail American power (Britain wanted an independent Texas to circumnavigate cotton dealings with the US, and to curtail American power).

3) Mexico does slightly better and retains about half or so and so much of its cession area territory.

4) War Ends as it did OTL

5) Mexico does worse and the US absorbs the other breakaway nations of Rio Grande and Yucatan along with Texas, or maybe just forces Mexico to recognize their independence.

This also ignores the inevitible result of any Mexican victory, namely a second war somewhere around 1870-75 when the Americans now hit Mexico like the Wrath of God itself.

Might even butterfly away the Civil War. Nothing better than an external enemy to get domestic opponets to bury the hatchet (generally between the external foe's shoulder blades).

What MIGHT be possible is Mexico coming away with more than they had than OTL--a military defeat in Winfield Scott's drive on Mexico City and a means to crush the Bear Flag Republic might conceivably leave Mexico in a (More) advantageous position than OTL. That said, this comes with CalBear's warning in place: if the United States decides to hit Mexico with a repeat war to secure the rest of what they want it will be the hammer of God.

So its a balancing point, and I THINK Mexico could probably get away with holding some part of California after the war without triggering a second conflict.

That said, the real way for this to go wildly ATL is for the US to annex Mexico and attempt to spin off a rump Mexico, which is likely to lead to a far smaller Mexico. Said Mexico would probably be a US puppet regime, although it might break away if a Civil War Analog comes to pass.
