Map Challenge: Central Europe in 1900

How can we achieve this? (That HRE-colored country is NOT the HRE. I colored it like that to differentiate it from the Rhineland nation.)

hmmm... Napoleon has a few more relatives (giving them each a fiefdom) and a few less impulsive ambitions (Spain, Russia) so that he gets to dictate the look of Central Europe?

Napoleon allies with Austria and Denmark, and they all agree to gang up on Europe and divide the continent between themselves. Austria gets much of the south German lands, Denmark seizes strange random territory, and France sets up clients in the western states.

Christina IV of Denmark's intervention in the 30 years war in mid 1620s goes beyond all (Danish) expectations, making Denmark the leading Protestant nation.

In the following 2 1/2 centuries the Imperials/Catholics repeatedly try to regain control over North Germany, but only achieve a consolidation of Danish hegemony over North Germany as the protestants seek protection and freedom under the Danish crown.

This also has Danish attention turn away from Scandinavia, and gradually all privinces on the Scandinavian peninsula are either lost to Sweden or given independence. As a sweet revenge Denmark successfully support the Gotland independence movement.

In the process Brandenburg never go beyond a medium German principality among many other, and the term "German" is mainly known among linguists to label a large group of related languages, of which Lowland German, Dutch, English and the Scandinavian tongues are seen as the prominent, and Highland German a rather odd dialect. But some still study it, mainly to read Luther's original bible translation.

Looking at the Dutch eastern border I would say a POD after the treaty of Vienna. Looking at Norway-Sweden confirms this.
Looking at the Belgium-Dutch border it is probably after the Belgian indepence in 1939.
Looking at the Belgian eastern border I would say a POD after 1919 when Belgium got Eupen-Malmedy. That last bit is unlikely though, looking at the rest of the borders. My guess would be that something happened during the German unification. Maybe something went wrong during the Franco-Prussian war in 1870 or maybe a somewhat earlier? Prussia got into a war with Denmark and France at the same time, later Austria (and Belgium) got involved. Prussia lost. Belgian got compensated with Eupen-Malmedy (like after WWI), Denmark got a lot of territorial gains in Germany, Austria managed to annex (or form a union) with the southern German states.
No idea about Italy.

Need I even say it?:rolleyes::p

That Polish west border seems to be nearly straight out the 10th century, except that the Neiße instead of the Bober is used...

And really, a Rhine border makes little sense. The Rhine is too much a transport route, so it would really rather connect both sides (as in both profit from the trade) then form a border...

Please do, don't you have a cool animation for it, like the congo animation?

I completely agree, see for example the Netherlands. I personaly think that rivers aren't as natural borders as some people (like French kings or emperors) think.

Hmm...Naples has been up to something with controlling all those parts of the coast, especially odd up Sweden :p

What? BAM-phobe! Larger maps are more detailed maps, after all!

Even tough I tend to agree, would not that be rather difficult?

I mean, not everyone has the same size monitor ;)

Austria (under a succession of very capable rulers) unifies Germany, resulting in a massive empire stretching from the North Sea to the Adriatic. Britain and Denmark don't like this, so they invade. Prussia, France, and Sweden join Austria, while the Low Countries and Russia join Britain. The British side wins, and divide up Germany into a Danish part, a central part, and a Rhinish part (including an expanded Alsace-Lorraine). Austria keeps its eastern territories, south Germany, and a chunk of Italy. Russia gets Prussia beyond the east side of the map (as well as Gottland), and Denmark gets a chunk of Prussia in OTL Germany. Belgium and the Netherlands get eastern borders that coincidentally correspond to OTL modern borders. Butterflies result in larger Papal States and a disunited Italy. For some reason, France and Austria keep their Mediterranean possessions.

POD: 30 Yrs War

-Sweden is more successful in the war and takes Northern Germany, this is eventually lost to Denmark over a war with Russia.

-Austria is more successful in the war and takes Bavaria, eventually being considered a natural province of the Hapsburgs. The rest of the HRE remains a squabbling bunch of provinces, cities and states.

-Napoleonic Wars - Napoleon's War goes pretty much OTL but his Confederation of the Rhine remains to be a buffer between ancient rivals France and Austria, as well as dissuading French influence in Germany. It eventually becomes like Belgium or Holland, a medium sized state that gets in the way of things and the treading grounds of armies.

-Prussia grows out into the rest of Poland but it's territories remain cut off by Denmark. Fearing to provoke a war by Super Austria, Denmark and maybe Russia it drops its claims in the early 20th century, preferring to concentrate on an Eastern destiny. West Germans see the obvious cultural differences between the two and the advantages of a nation-state and create their independant German Confederation in the 1910's.

I guess the north Italian state becomes an Austrian puppet at the Congress of Vienna, the middle state is the Papal States (??).

The POD is way further back than any of these ones. The Ottoman Empire invaded Italy in 1481, and with the increased focus on the West, destroyed Austria and reached even further into Germany. Once Vienna and Austria fell Germany looked for foreign help, and an expansionist Denmark provides protection for German princes, allowing them to expand deep into Germany. The Ottomans end up getting pushed out of their Italian territory by the Spanish (who stayed in Sicily) and now have only a toehold in Italy. With the Ottoman and Danish boots firmly on the neck of the German people a few German Princes end up drawing statelets around themselves. In 1900 the tension is rising, and the Germans are rumored to be readying for a sixth round of rebellions. Perhaps now, armed with Royal Swedish arms and following the lead of Catalonia successful dual rising against the Castillians and French (the so-called "people's war") they will be successful.
