Maori Wars and the Pa

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pā_(Māori)

The Maori Pa fortified villages exacted a heavy toll on attacking British troops during the Maori Wars of the mid-19th C. WI the British had learned at that point from the futility of attacking such heavily entrenched and fortified positions, and developed tactics to counter the Pa, or to themselves apply the Maori construction and maintenance of such fortified positions ? Could these lessons have say lasted into the Boer War and WWI, and how would British military thinking have been affected for the better ? Could greater acknowledgment of the Pa system have contributed towards avoiding the horrific loss rates of frontal assaults on fortified, unsubdued entrenchments on the Western Front ?
