mao is born in britain - what happens to China

WI Mao's parents moved to Britain, and Mao is born in London.

What happens to China without the world's worst butcher running it?

China may still go communist, Chou en-lai and others will still be there. The whole thing will be more reasonable though, no cultural revolution for one thing. That whole thing was a bunch of crap; it made me wonder whether Mao was insane, as I am convinced Hitler and Stalin were.

Well, he would probably not be anyone important, but without him in China, the "Red Book" wouldn't have existed, which possibly means less strict laws in the PRC.
Without the Red Book, Tianamen Square has a chance of not happening, which means less bad press for Chinese Communism.

I really haven't looked into it that much, so i could be wrong. A lot.

From Wiki: "Mao turned down an opportunity to study in France because he firmly believed that China's problems could be studied and resolved only within China" Maybe Mao goes to study in France but doesn't get far, and eventually leads a life of mediocrity as a restaurant owner in Paris. :p

Hey! Successfully running a restaurant in Paris of all places is evidence of much more than mediocre accomplishment.

The problem with the POD is that there is so much mythology about the role of Mao. On the one hand, the Communist victory was his own single-handed achievement. On the other, he was the guy who destroyed a viable movement and turned it into a murderous tyranny. Between these positions, somewhere, lies the truth, but until we have a better idea of what it is, it's hard to speculate meaningfully. Personally, I suspect the Communists still have an even chance of winning and there will be other leaders. There's also no guarantee that any scenario is going to be nice.

Mao was from Hunan, and most of the Chinese who emigrated to Western countries or, in fact, other Asian countries were from Guangdong and Fujian. Plus his parents were landowners and would have had no reason to leave.

Zhou Enlai and Deng Xiaoping did go to France, they didn't end up in mediocrity.

Also, I believe the Vietnamese Communists had their start in France. Correct?
Well, in their case it's because Vietnam was a French colony. But yeah, it's correct. Ho Chi Minh in particular became a Communist while studying in France.

you could move the librarian's place of birth a few miles within China, and still the question would have the same value.

though - "world's worst"? remember he had a larger population to draw from.

No, no! He doesn't run a restaurant, but rather a 'charcuterie', where he is not 'world's worst', just mediocre.:)
