Mao dies after GLF, but before Cultural Revolution

Let's assume Mao dies of natural causes in about 1964. Who succeeds him at this time? How is he remembered in China? No Cultural Revolution would help his reputation, but dying shortly after his policies started the worst famine in the twentieth century probably won't help. Would the "capitalist roaders" be able to implement their reforms? Sino-Soviet relations probably won't be as bad as OTL, but can the split be mended?

Would the "capitalist roaders" be able to implement their reforms?

As the GPCR and shanghai shenanigans show the party is riding a tiger of left nomenklatura and proletarian politics. Some is radically Stalinist or pro peasant. Some is actually communist.

It took the GLF, GPCR *and* Gang of Four before the technocratic right mobilised and it took until 1989 before they crushed proletarian politics within the party.

So no. It isn’t going to be capitalist roaders. At best/worst you’ll be getting a new course movement towards commanding heights / hands off small producers.
