Manuel I's Southern Italy expedition

1167-1169: After reinstalling Alexander, the strategos received calls of assistance from both Genoa and Pisa regarding the Normans. The Genoese need mercenaries to retake Cagliari, not trusting the Normans they've already hired, while the Pisans want to take the entire island for themselves. Andronikos agrees to aid the declining Pisans and retake Sardinia, but he has no intention of handing it back...

This is rather ambitious; Sardinia is a fair ways from Italy, which is a fair ways from the City. Can Andronikos commit Imperial forces so far away without explicit authorization from Manuel?

(BTW, I like the style of this; not bogged down with "colorful" detail. That can be very entertaining, but it takes a lot of work to generate, and slows down the narrative of events.)

This is detailed in later posts, though while Andronikos doesn't have explicit imperial authority, his family does have money.

Thank you. Though I sometimes worry that I'm not going into too much detail all the time.

BTW, this is the old thread. Here's the new, up-to-date thread:

I've just posted the most recent update today.
