Malet coup succeeds

There was a coup attempt by General Malet, against Napoleon, in France, in 1812, after the disastrous Russian Campaign, read https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malet_coup_of_1812, the coup was to make people believe, that, Napoleon had died and restore the Republic. What if the coup had succeeded? What would Napoleon do, when he found out? What would the anti-Napoleon coaliton do?

Nappy would issue a bulletin saying “The rumors about my death are exaggerated” :)

The moment news of Napoleon actually being alive reaches Paris the New Republic is fucked the army in France simply isn't fighting him.

Now if Malet succeeds in Paris and his claim is true by coincidence (Napoleon falls in a river), that is an interesting POD.

could they have tried assassinating him sometimes before or after the coup in order to prevent rebellion?

Even after he was defeated at leipzig, france defeated and brought to heel, and exiled to some italian island, the army was still loyal to napoleon.

I'm well aware of that but that was because there wasn't a good alternative. Malet, however, would be a good alternative.

What remained of it was.

Louis XVIII, in a well-intentioned mistake, had abolished conscription, so that the army largely consisted of those who saw it as their home an weren't eager to do back to civilian life, plus some returned PoWs most of whom had not experienced the defeats of 1812-14 - precisely the element most likely to favour a Napoleonic restoration. .

Inn 1812, OTOH, it consisted largely of conscripts, many of whom probably longed for this to be all over so that they could go home. There could well have opposed Napoleon's return even assuming he escaped interception on his way back from Russia.
