Malcolm X Saves President From Assassination

In the film X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, mutant extremist Mystique breaks with mutant extremist (and her sometimes boyfriend) Magneto to dramatically save U.S. President Richard Nixon from assassination. As a result, by the time of X-MEN: APOCALYPSE (I haven't seen it yet, so no spoilers) mutants are apparently popular instead of being feared and hated.

The closest analogy I can think of to Mystique in this scenario is Malcolm X, who rejected the Nation of Islam's racism after visiting Mecca and seeing Muslims of all colors worshiping together. He then got assassinated by the more extreme elements of the Nation.

So...

What if his assassination is avoided and he's instrumental in foiling an assassination attempt on a US President by more extreme black-radical types (the Nation of Islam or Communists who wanted a separate Southern black nation)? What effects does this have on the civil-rights movement?

uh...what?

Mystique =/= Malcom X just because they both occupy "minitory status" in their respective realities.

But outside of that wierd comparrison, I find it extremely hard to believe that Malcom X, even after leaving the Nation, would somehow compel himself to save the life of Lydon Johnson, let alone Nixon after, in even the most imaginative scenario.
Yes he moderated his rhetoric after the Hajj, but nevertheless was militant in his abhorrence to US domestic and international policy, especially on issues concerning treatment of black GIs in Vietnam.

I like the idea! I think I'd like it even better if it was slightly earlier and he was still in the main flow of the Nation of Islam.

Let's say when visiting Chicago or New York, the president agrees to meet with Malcolm because afterall he is the leader of a substantial number of citizens.

There's a rope line and a crowd scene. Malcolm sees someone begin to raise a gun and quickly puts the person in a bear hug. And he simply will not let the person raise the gun.

Afterwards, Malcolm says, I'm not going to allow any unnecessary taking of life, whether the president of the United States or anyone else.

And many persons who are what we call might 'mainstream' citizens think, Wow, when Malcolm X talks about self defense, he kinds of really means it. And if people want to be part of a separatist movement, well, I'm not too familiar with it, but I guess it's okay. All part of living in a free society. And African-American citizens definitely should begin being treated as regular, first-class citizens. That is, the Nation of Islam gets a much fairer hearing.

And the aftermath, in a couple of weeks, it doesn't get that much attention. Just like a person not getting credit for a bridge which doesn't collapse, a mere attempt rather fades into minor texture in the background. And I wish would-be assassins would remember, it's better that way!

as far as who is the person who tries to assassinate the President, I personally would prefer something nonpolitical. Here are three possibilities:

someone with simmering rage several months later over getting cheated out of a job. This is what I was told as an elementary student was the motivation of John Wilkes Booth, although he was definitely part of a conspiracy. And including this assassin, well, rather like the subtle and ironic comment.

Or, the would-be assassin is a young woman who stopped taking her medication for schizophrenia because her doctor couldn't be bothered to listen to her about the side effects. Heck, the doctor should have asked her if she wanted to try another medication.

Or, the would-be assassin is a young man who was sexually abused in some foster home living situation, and no one at the agency and no one else wanted to extend themselves and listen to what the young man was trying to say.
