OK, I know I posted this in the Weird Dream thread but I have been thinking about it all day

I was working in Nazi Intelligence, specialising in the Imperial Russian Navy. The dream started in the Eagle's Nest with me explaining Russian ship names to Hitler, and others. The Russian Empire had been the main country responsible for the independence of the United States so a lot of Russian ships were either Russian translations of American ship names from that war (eg the Russian for "Two Puppies") or a Russian transliteration of American ship names (eg Potomazh). Hitler and co were pleasant and mildly interested.
I was then called away to Kiel where Hess had his main office, and seemed to be who I reported to. The German navy was getting ready for the invasion of Norway and I had to go aboard the Leberecht Maas before it departed and retrieve some papers to give to Hess, which I did. He then spoke about the relative slow speed of German destroyers and how one of them called "Zestorer" was "the old Z27 which had fought at Jutland". He then sent be back to the Leberecht Maas to join the task force heading for Norway.
However, that was not my destination. It seemed that the Imperial Russian Navy's Northern Fleet were a big danger to German ore imports, so the Leberecht Maas departed from the task force and headed up to Russian Finmark where we landed near to their advance base. We were ambushed by a crack group of famous Russian marines, and I shot their leader, while my comrades shot the others. The Leberecht Maas then entered the fjord, shining in the sun of early morning to pick us up

So, how to make a timeline where this happens?
Working backwards might make most sense - a surviving Imperial Russia is not much of a stretch in a world which sees Germany defeated in whatever equates to the Great War here
The rise of the Nazis is more difficult, without the Communist threat, but there was nothing in the dream to imply that maybe France or Britain did not go Communist in lieu of Russia.
One thing there is that without the Romanovs being overthrown it might not seem so vital for the British monarchy to make all the changes they did in 1917 - names of dynasties, titles, attainder against German relatives etc. This might then leave a simmering boil that strikes etc could bring to the surface.
Of course, one also has to look at the alternative American Revolutionary War, where Russia and not France, was the maiin country helping them to attain independence. It's possible in the dream that this was in the 1800s decade not the 1770s so that could be played with
Of course the more you play with THAT the less likely you end up with Hitler and Hess...
