Major African States?

A 10-20 year delay is not going to save any part of Africa from colonization. None of the indigenous societies is going to "develop" within that brief space.

The only ones who might be saved is if you imagine that during the later scramble for Africa that a Great War scenario breaks out and thus inadvertently spares some chiefdoms deep in the interior. But it would be because of European politics, nothing the Africans did themselves.

iirc, there weren't many major states at that time. the two parts of Africa which were diplomatically exempt--Liberia and Ethiopia--obviously come to mind, but the only other ones that i could see would perhaps be a Zulu kingdom and maybe an independent Egypt, though Britain already had a few holdings on the continent by this point iirc. at this time, the west African kingdoms have largely come to an end.
Ethiopia was Italy's, not exempt. They were unable to capture it before the times moved on to accept Ethiopia as a state. Its independence was because of location and resistance, not the Europeans accepting it.
