Magna Nova Atlantica

I thinking of a new Roman thread where they accidently discover north amercia and some of the Carthaginians escape, for more fun later. But I'm off to work, more in the morning

The year is 604 AUC and Carthage is getting worried. The Roman legions under Scipio Aemilianus are getting nearer.
Hamilicar Barca cousin of Hasdrabal is leading a small fleet, really just several ships away from the doomed city to found a new city far away from the eyes of Rome. They slip through the pillars of Heracles and sail down the cost and then up the Gambia river

date 690AUC . Outside Novo Carthago. Caeser's invasion of Brittania has progressed better on TTL than on OTL and he has called for more solders.
Parts of the IX legion under the leadership of the legate Marcus Pompilius Hellenius have been posted to Brittania.
By evening all the boats are loaded to the satisfaction of Gaius Rufinius Bostonius the Primus pilium.
Hellenius had extra provisions loaded after seeing an eagle caught by a shark.

Wait, they sail up the Gambia River? In Africa? They'll all die of disease. If they don't though divine intervention or some other miracle, they certainly won't be able to acquire the necessary materials to build a new city. At best, they'll be limited to a few huts on the river.

If you are from carthage have just had your city distroyed and are looking for a place to hide it makes since. The Gambia is just below the desert zone, easy to get to and beyond the sphere of Rome. Remember that the they also would have had the tradition of Queen Dido and the ox hide.

Yes, but there is still the disease problem. In OTL, that was the main barrier to European colonisation. African malaria is particularly nasty.

And don't forget the crop and cattle problem. Wheat won't fare well in this area, and both horses and cattle will likely die

Ok so have them use the last river just north of the tropical zone. The idea is for them to hve a refuge away from Rome but accesable to the Med. I also wanted them down the atlantic coast of Africa

For any Carthaginians fleeing the destruction of their city, there are plenty of places within the scope of the Mediterranean world where they could go. It would still be over a century after 146 BCE before Rome would conquer most of it. There were quite a few Punic colonies along the coasts of Mauretania that Rome ignored. Some could have sought refuge with the Numidian kings, and others would have just gone to Syria, Phoenicia or Egypt. These were easier choices to make in comparison to exploring the great body of water which is the Atlantic Ocean using triremes.

I'm currently at work and Will post more this evening,
As for keeping them in Africa at this time it is to keep them closer to resourses.

So having gotten a better map of Northwestern Africa and having listened to your posts. I withdraw the Gambia river and replace it with the Senegal River. The Senegal or as it was known to Pliny the Elder, the Bambotus fits much better. It is longer with several large tributaries reaching into the Sahl.
The Bambotus flows through a semiarid area which sounds much like the North African coast.
