M*A*S*H takes place in Vietnam instead of Korea?

Well at least it would be more justifiable to have a show run for 11 years in Vietnam than in Korea

The book was about Korea. The author, Richard Hooker, loathed both the movie and television program while also cashing the checks each provided him. He took a great delight in his later M.A.S.H. novels with portraying the iconic characters in ways completely at odds with their film and TV characterizations. In one later book, Hawkeye Pierce bluntly states that "kicking liberals" is a "good idea".

The movie by Robert Altman is really about Vietnam. He just set it in Korea so he could make a movie about Vietnam while the Vietnam war was still being fought. Saying it his movie was set in Korea while also saying nudge nudge wink wink was just a way for Altman to cover his ass.

The television program was originally based on the movie, so it was really about Vietnam too. After they ran out of ideas a few seasons in and it became the, as I've read it described elsewhere, The Hawkeye Emo Half Hour, the TV show wasn't really set anywhere at all.

During the commentary on the film, Altman mentions that he fought the whole "...and then there was Korea," and Eisenhower's "I will go to Korea," at the beginning of the film, since those two quotes are the only time it's actually mentioned that that's where they are.

I always did get a kick out of the fact that the show ran like three years longer than the war. If it was in Vietnam then at least it wouldn't have made a difference.

Also...they should remake it in Afghanistan. NOT Iraq. Afghanistan's the war that got forgotten about and fucked over, so that should be the one.

Three years? Try like eight years longer than the war, M*A*S*H lasted for 11 years, Korea only three.

Jesus, it was that long? I didn't realize the show lasted that long...I guess when you're watching it on Hallmark Channel and the same episode pops up every two months you just assume there couldn't have been 11 years worth of episodes.

What if that thing I said?

Oh! We all forgot the big change! The openning scene! Yeah, they still would've had the song, but the helicopters would've been Huey dustoffs, not the Bell Model 47s.

And...since I'm sure we all haven't experienced the MASH theme in awhile...

Through early morning fog I see
visions of the things to be
the pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see...

[chorus]:

That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.

I try to find a way to make
all our little joys relate
without that ever-present hate
but now I know that it's too late, and...

[Chorus]

The game of life is hard to play
I'm gonna lose it anyway
The losing card I'll someday lay
so this is all I have to say.

[Chorus]

The only way to win is cheat
And lay it down before I'm beat
and to another give my seat
for that's the only painless feat.

[Chorus]

The sword of time will pierce our skins
It doesn't hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger...watch it grin, but...

[Chorus]

A brave man once requested me
to answer questions that are key
'is it to be or not to be'
and I replied 'oh why ask me?'

'Cause suicide is painless
it brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.
...and you can do the same thing if you choose.

If MASH was set during the Vietnam War instead of the Korean War, one would it expect the renowned classic to last even longer than its original 11 year duration. Not that I would care, nor or an abundance of ardent MASH fans around the world though. It would have been a great show regardless if it was set in Vietnam. However, I’m quite sure many Americans wouldn’t agree with my sentiments, despite MASH being the show in focus. I mean the last thing an American would want to do when arriving home from work during the mid 1970s would be to watch a dramedy on the never-ending nightmare known as Vietnam.
