LVT(A)-1 on Omaha beach

On D-Day the DD Shermans which were supposed to support the landing all sank do to the waves. What would the effects have been if in instead of DD Shermans the LVTs with Stuart turrets the Marines were using in the Pacific at the same time had been used and presumably don't sink and can provide support for the American landing forces on Omaha.
Would the operation have gone smoother with fewer casualties as those on Gold and Sword did with the help they gained from Hobarts "Funnies"?

They didn't ALL sink...just the American ones...:p

On all of the other invasion beaches including Utah the Duplex Drive Shermans were launched less than a mile from the shore and most of them reached the beaches. On Omaha for some reason they were launched three miles out. The Royal Navy observer on board the US Navy escort for the LCTs made scathing comments about the commanders of the LCTs.

In Operation Dragoon and the Rhine crossing they were highly successful.

According to wiki the LVT(A)-1 had 6 to 12 mm armor. Doesn't that mean it's penetrable by 7.62 mm and bigger, let alone a HMG-calibre?

That's very little, even compared to a light tank, let alone a medium tank like the Sherman.

I'd think it's not only too lightly armoured, especially for ETO, it would also be vulnerable due to it's lack of a roof, not protecting it's crew and troops from fire from above or shrapnel.

With hindsight they would certainly be better then nothing, but uncomparable to the protection of true tanks.

Edit: 12 mm is less then a halftrack and even those were terribly vulnerable to MG42's and the likes.
