In 1890, the Dutch king William III died. William III was King of the Netherlands, but also Grand Duke of Luxembourg. William III’s daughter Wilhelmina succeeded her father as Queen of the Netherlands, but not as Grand Duchess of Luxembourg, because only men were able to became Grand Duke of Luxembourg.

But what if this never happened? What if William III introduced a law in Luxembourg which includes that also women could become ruler of Luxembourg? This means Wilhelmina succeeds her father as Grand Duchess of Luxembourg, too.

What would have happened? What would be the differences in things like World War One, the Dutch history in the 20th century, and various other things?

Thoughts?

An alternative option is that one of Wilhelmina's brothers don't predecease her.

(Ironically, Luxembourg ended up being inherited by a Grand Duchess in the end anyway.)

If this doesn't change anything before outbreak of WW1 this might change quiet much depending would Germany dare invade Luxembourg during Schlieffen Plan. If so it means Netherlands entering to the war. War would be shorter when Germany would be blockade by the Netherlands too and them fighting Dutch too. CPs might lost now much quicker. Finally Netherlands gets some border regions.

Or then another option is that Netherlands joins to CPs. This would make things quiet intresting.

The Dutch Royal Family was pretty pro-German. This was the case with the Boer Wars taking some sort of an anti-British stance, with the Germans supporting the Boers in some way, being more sympathetic. If the Germans build on that, they may convince the Dutch to let them pass in exchange of a future share of Belgium (Flanders).
