Louis XV dies at Metz in 1744.

Louis XV of course made the controversial decision to return the Southern Netherlands to Austria IOTL. If the new king/regent decides to annex them instead, there could be large butterflies there.

But in otl the war went on for another 4 years, would that mean that the British and Austrians would change their attitude towards France during the war.

Plus, IIRC, the French generals were quite competent in the war and Louis XV hurt the war effort more than he helped.

(Fails to resist urge to plug my D-398 which has this as a PoD...)

I'm not sure. IOTL France did invade/conquer the Austrian Netherlands under Louis XV's rule; they just decided to return them at the negotiating table.
