Louis IX of France and Egypt.

Louis IX of France succeeds in capturing Cairo, after having captured Damietta without a blow. Although this has come up before, how does Louis specifically govern Egypt? Can the French even hold it? What happens in N. Africa and even Spain, with the N. African Muslims now cut off from the Near East.

The next rebellion (lots of Muslims and Schismatics) cost them the whole lot, and France goes broke trying to hold the place whilst convering everybody. NEXT!

...Yeah, something like that would happen. Expect...they would have a lot more problems if there rebbellion happend in the 1960's...with alergia and that mess going on...

I doubt they'd try and keep it in union with France, someone else would be spun off as king there. At the least its planned to split France to one son and Egypt to another once Louis is dead.
It depends on how their rule goes if they could hold it. Likely they would be stupid, very religiously intolerant and try to convert even the Copts. If they balanced things and brought the Copts onside and tolerated the muslims though....Egypt was a rich land, it may be able to afford to stay independant.

If he can get the support of the Copts, a French ruler could probably keep his power in Egypt. However, the real problem would probably be keeping both Egypt and France in line. I mean, the Roman-German Emperors already had problems dealing with both Germany and Italy, seperated only by the Alps - France and Egypt should be even more difficult.

And while Leej is right that the two realms can be split, Louis might just be ambitious enough not to do so.

And even if the empire falls apart after a generation, the long term effects can be interesting to write about. @HTG - you don't have to be so dismissive.

Maybe the pressures of trying to hold down two different realms prove to much for Louis and his heirs, so the empire is partitioned (if done among Louis's sons, maybe Phillip III gets France while Robert Count of Clermont is installed in egypt)? Over time, we have a French nobility ruling over egypt, in a manner somewhat similar to the mamlukes. Maybe not to plausible, but it is an interesting prospect, especially if egypt winds up involved with other european powers somehow...
