Lost in Space WI

There's a problem here. The pilot episode was serious, and Dr. Smith was a sinister, capable saboteur. The rest of the series was humorous, and Smith was an incompetent and a bumbler. Also, the premise of the show was to find other planets to colonize because of our overpopulation problem. The problem with that is, we'd have to be launching millions of people into space every day, and it would take years for them to get to other star systems.

Even if Smith hadn't gone on the ship, the crew would still be seeking out new life and new civilizations, going where no one has gone before. They'd still be finding out which planets are safe to colonize, what dangers there are, what regions of the galaxy to avoid, etc. The series wouldn't be much different.
Although it would be nice if Niven, Clarke, Asimov et al. had written for it...:)
