Frank Sinatra wasn't the most orderly or law-abiding kid at the beginning of his career (copies of a mug shot taken by the Hoboken, NJ police are well known). Suppose a fistfight, most likely over something trivial, had resulted in an injury to his larynx? All it would have taken is a slight misdirection of a punch for any number of reasons, and Sinatra takes a blow to the throat. The resulting injury could have compromised his singing voice.
So what does he do if his vocal career is over before it really gets under way? Does Sinatra turn to his friends/associates in a certain organization and become first a wiseguy, then a goodfella, a made man, and on to a capo? Would he become a fixture in Las Vegas as a shady casino owner and operator as opposed to a performer? Or would he wind up spinning out his days in federal custody, say, after a conviction for racketeering or tax evasion?
