Lord of the Ring Movie Late 1950's Casting

Alec Guinness as Denethor or Theoden? He'd just recently have won best actor for The Bridge on the River Kwai and I think he'd be perfect for either such troubled characters. Maybe it's too small a role for him. Make the movie a few years later and he could play Gandalf instead of Obi-Wan. :D

Check Step by Step for tomorrow for Alec Guinness. I planning something for him.

I thought about that, but I'm admitedly a huge fan of Kirk Douglas - plus, I wanted either him or John Hunt playing the ranger King Aragorn. I do agree that Richard Burton would be another great pick though.

What about Steve McQueen, Yul Brener, Charles Bronson, Audie Murphey, or dare I say, John Wayne? There are dozens of great Western actors - surely you aren't using all fo them?

So I take it you making it a single film, as opposed to a trilogy?

Also, another recommended casting - John Hunt as anyone.

McQueen is busy with Wanted Dead or Alive as in OTL.
Brener is not going to do a small part in a Fantasy movie at this point. He just won best actor for King and I a year or two earlier. He would have made a interesting Gandalf or Aragorn. I may use him for one of the future projects.

Bronson is just starting on his career and mainly doing TV as in OTL. He will be involved in one of the future project in the Timeline.

I not a Audie Murphy as actor fan. Only film of his I like is "No Name on the Bullet".

John Wayne does not fit. I got him doing more production work in the Timeline and I figure he still doing same films as in OTL. Now if we could just make the 1960's film The Alamo, watchable.

Camfield wanted Ralph Richardson as Gadalf. He was the First choice of Director Micheal Mann and would make the perfect Gadalf. But Richardson would refuse again.
So actor Christopher Lee would for a second time play Gadalf.
His Hammer Co Star Peter Cushing would play Saruman.
John Hurt would be cast as Gollum
Julian Grover would appear as Theoden
Patrick Troughton as Grima Wormtongue
Robert Hardy was cast as Denethor
Peter Wyngarde was cast as Boromir
Richard Johnson as Faramir

For the cast

I'd have to dig out the book, but there was a Tolkien compilation from the 70s that included a 1962 essay entitled 'No Monroe in Lothlorien' by Arthur Weir. He suggested Alec Guiness as Gandalf, Charles Laughton as Theoden and Greta Garbo as Galadriel.

I thought about Laughton but I went with Karloff in the 1958 version because I wanted to give him some non horror Roles.

I planning to have Guiness do the 1970's live action The Hobbit. Of course He Gandalf.

Garbo had retired in 1941 and I don't think she would have come out of retirement for the Lord of the Rings.

I did not get to him yet. He appear as Gandalf in the 1970's Hobbit Live action film .

And I still have not got to him yet. Tomorrow the 15th I will post the 1960's animated Film and the 1970's Live action The Hobbit. I hope if RL does not get in the way.

Next time I decide to post a short piece , I better make sure it really a Short Piece.
