Looking for French civil war of the 1930's thread

I'm guessing someone on this board has already done a French Civil War of, say late 1936 to 1938 or so TL. My search function hasn't been working so if anyone can find a link that would be great. If it hasn't been done, it would be an intriguing topic.

You mean something along the lines of Popular Front vs Right Wingers in general or a specific events (and the search function doesn't work for me either)

Thanks for links and help. I'm thinking of a French civil war modeled after Spain. There was talk at the time of such an event happening with Popular Front supporters on one side, and ranged against them rightist groups like the Croix de Feu (after summer of 1936 the Parti Social Francaise), Action Francais, and others. Big question would be where would supporters of centrists, like the Radicals, go, and which regions would be strongholds of the various sides. Paris itself might go for the right-wing, but it would have been surrounded by the red belt.

Very interesting. I hope you do something with it.

Radicals would support the left against a Ultramontane-right wing front. I'd imagine a similar makeup to the Spanish Civil War, where you'd have the far-right aligning with more moderate Catholics due to the makeup of the opposition.

Mid-thirties, a few groups to consider for the "National Front" side are:

- Parti Populaire Français (founded in 1933 by Jacques Doriot). Had some shocktroops called the Service d'Ordre. They wore dark blue shirts and berets with black ties and brassards. Was said to have about 250 000 members before the begining of WW2. Was clearly inspired by the Nazi.

- Parti Francisque (founded in 1933 by Marcel Bucard): They shock troops were called the Corps Francs. Their uniforms consisted of a pale grey-blue shirt (think of the french WW1 uniform before turning khaki) with navy blue tie and beret. Bucard's personnal bodyguard was the Main Bleue who dressed like other members except for black cuffs, collars and shoulder straps. it was said to have roughly 10 000 members before the second world war. Openly admited to be a french version of Italian Fascism.

- Parti Français National Communiste: (Founded in 1934 by Pierre Clémenti): Claimed 32 000 members but the figure is in doubt. An attempt to bridge the gap between Fascist and Communist but is reported to have tilted more toward the former.

- Croix de Feu/Parti Social Français: (Founded By Maurice d'Hartoy in 1927, changed to the later name in 1936). Originaly a veterans group for those who had received the Croix de Guerre medal.

- Action Française: (Founded in 1898 by Henri Vaugeois et Maurice Pujo) Monarchists and ultra-catholic group despite being disavowed by the pope in 1926 and the french pretender in 1937. Its strongmen were the Camelots du Roi whose job, in theory, was only to sell the group's newspaper.

- Solidarité Française: (founded in 1933 by François Coty) Inspired by Italian fascism. Might have had 20-30 000 members.

- Jeunesses Patriotes: (Founded in 1924 by Pierre Taittinger): Had 100 000 members in the mid 1930s
