Long term animosity in America between Irish Catholics and Protestants

so in 1870 and 1871 on July 12 (the anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne) there were riots between Irish Catholics and Irish Protestants in New York City, they got so bad that the National Guard was called in, what POD could make such fights between these two groups in American cities fairly normal, for a long time?

A more cloistered America would be a possibility. US has ,and has had, so many facets (or economic faucets, too, pun intended) that people find better things to do than fight. Carving out a life and keeping up with the Jones Family makes old world moss back rivalries take a back seat. To spread this beyond New York would require a changed America. KKK being strong for generations would be a good shot.

If immigrants to the US move on so quickly Then why did you have organisation like NORAID 100 years after the end of mass Irish immigration? I think its more accurate to say that some immigrant groups move on more quickly than others. English immigrants to the US (which outnumbered the Irish 2 to 1 in the 19th century) assimilated into the WASP mainstream within a generation, as did Anglo-Irish, while Irish Catholics for whatever reason didn't.
