Battle of Cirebon

(Part A)

1946 February 8, Outskirts of Cirebon

The Friday prayers is just finished. With the news of the KNIL army marching toward Cirebon -supported by those accursed bombers and artillery barrages- my men's morale must be throughly maintained for the inevitable battle.

And here we are, at an almost empty village of Ciwaringin. The scouts have managed to convince most of the women and children to took refuge as quickly as possible to Brebes, guarded by a third of their men, the elder ones. The youths of this village has been given proper arms to help us defend against the upcoming Dutch onslaught, but... I still wonder if their quick training to operate their guns are enough to do this... still, we need every help we can muster.

Our communist friends actually try to convince us not to hold the Friday prayer, but I know, for some of us, this could be their last Friday prayer. I must say that I am agree to take the risk, but I asked the Christians and Atheists among our ranks to keep on watch outside.

I stepped out of the Langgar*[1], asking the report from the nearby Christian soldiers about the latest conditions... and much to my surprise, they already suspect something must be wrong, as there is no sound of flying planes, or even any sound at all. This is too quiet...

Suddenly, the silence is broken by a tremendous, though distant, roars of airplanes to the south of our current positions. We knew that captain Raymond Westerling's forces must be near, since the survivors from the ranks of the Mudjahiddin guerrillas confirmed that they will soften their target by bombardment first, before quickly charge and bring the fight to us up close. My men are now visibly nervous and now I know, our time will come soon.

"Soemanto, Azis, lead your groups into the the forests and keep hiding until the Londo show their colonialist nose! Djamal, Toegiman, Soegimin, your groups must man the flak cannons and fire at will toward the Allied aircrafts. Djoseph, spread your group of anti-tank gunners to protect the flak cannons. Djoemari and Ali, your groups must make sure the machine guns are in positions, and keep them well hidden before the Londo ground troops are at your firing range. I will personally direct the defense of this building complex and direct our snipers! Merdeka!"

"Merdeka!" said my men and they quickly go toward their pre planned positions, while I personally re-checking my own Type 97 Sniper rifle and cleaning its optical sight. I glanced to the map provided by Soewardi himself... never tought the educator could be a good military strategist too, and I am glad we have him on our side. There is no room for errors in this battle, or Cirebon will fall.

...

"ALLAHUAKBAR! THEY COME!" said Soegimin loudly, and the flak cannons roars from their southren posts.

"SHOT THEM DEAD!!!" said another flak operator, and I can already see the bombers swerve their movement, as if taken off guards by our flak cannons here. The airplanes tried to climb higher, but one of those damned B-24 are down and crashed into the rice fields. Not exploding... hmm...

I then look toward the crash site of the plane... better safe than sorry... and in my optical sight, I can see a blonde haired man trying to pry open the cockpit glass from the inside... I wonder if there are some survivors, but arresting them are quite problematic with another five bombers trying to blast us from above. So I took my aim, and press my finger on the trigger... Alright, first confirmed kill in this battle.

"Nice shot sir..." said Temon, my aide.

"Stay focus. I have a gut feeling that the Dutch dogs' ground forces will arrive soon to..."

And suddenly the dreaded Bomb blasts are out there like angry thunders. Those Allied aircrafts bomb the houses indiscriminately... I wince to think that some of my men is already dead at this point, but I hope Ali's machine gunners did not sustain too much causalities. Their ground forces is not arriving yet...

Another blast...

Toegimin's position are hit...

"Toegimin! Soepardi! NO! Nooooo....." said Temon weakly after seeing the after impact of the Allied bomb.

"Temon, Kasim, Hilmi! Go to Toegimin's post and check if they are alive. And if the flak cannon are still operationable, let them fire against those damned aircrafts again!"

"Y... YES SIR!" said Temon and the other two men are quickly running behind him.

Where is the ground forces? I think they won't be...

Another blast...

Ah, this time is better, another B-24 down, and the other aircrafts are limping back like dogs to their lair... This time the plane crashed and explodes in the rice field... Good, no survivors to think about...

Oh well, here they are... Tanks, Jeeps... and trucks... carrying both Allied and KNIL soldiers... I reloaded by rifle and re-focusing on the optical sight. The truck driver at the rear seems open... so... I put my finger in the trigger, and watch how the driver slumped and the truck smashed another truck.

...

Good...

This is the time...

...

"SERAAAANNNNGGGGGG!!! ALLAHUAKBARRRRRR!!!" I said it with my voice, at the top of my lungs. And Djoseph's group with the antitank guns start to fire against those Allied tanks, while I quickly re-focused my position and aim for...

PS: Soedirman is well known to personally led the guerilla battles IOTL and a type 97 rifle is in Museum Perjuangan Jogjakarta labelled as Soedirman's rifle, so putting Soedirman as a sniper is not too far from what happened OTL (and despite his health is detoriating in two last years of his life, he keep on fighting on top of a tandu (sedan chair), so well, firing rifle in close range is quite impractical for him, better put my money on the sniper thing so...)
*1) Village Mushala/Mosque

Soedirman is still the best independence general :D all these Commies... Guh. Also, I'm supporting you using pre-EYD spellings for important names and titles, since monarchists will win, and Nusantaran nobles are pretty dutchified after 300 years of cooptation... .. Will you add Malaya and North Kalimantan to the Kemaharajaan? That mention of Malay militias making British residents nervous seems implying that, to me. Real Nusantara, from the north of the Peninsula (kick the Thais out!) to the end of New Guinea, huh? :)

Another B-24 down...

HOW COULD... It wasn't supposed to be like here... The inlanders*[1] aren't supposed to concentrate all those damned Flak Cannons here! For God's sake! Our scouts and spy planes did report about a large concentrations of inlander troops and militias, but they did not say anything about those damned prepared Flak Cannon emplacement...

How...? How could they hide all of... Wait... why we did not bother re-checking those piled rice straws and grasses? I must admit those inlanders can be cunning if they must to... with chicken and goats gnawing and scratching all those piles, who knows that some of them actually hiding 2cm Flak Cannons within? I feel something worse could be...

"WHAT?" said Johann, my driver.

"WATCH OUT! SNIPERS!" I shout as I see the Troop carrier drivers fall dead and his truck smashing another truck and both fall to their side, causing quite a jam in our troop movements. I cranked my own Sten gun, and begun firing toward the likely hiding places of those damn snipers before jumping out of the jeep and hide behind the fallen trucks for cover.

"C... captain... we... we..." said Martin, a young trooper who currently try to crawl out of the fallen truck.

"There is no time to talk, get your guns and shot those inlander rebels! It is an ambush! Karel! Man the machine gun on the Jeep and keep a distance! Jacob! Tanks! CHARGE!" I said while helping Martin to stand before hiding back behind the truck.

"Wait a minute, Captain! Watch out!" said Martin while tackling me to the ground. I tried to move but then... I feel blood in my hand... Martin...

"Ca... captain...." said Martin while coughing up in pain, a bullet pierce his back, and according to my experience...

"Ssh... lay down but fight if you feel an urge to sleep! I'll try to..." I tried to calm him up so he could survive, but alas...

"SERAAAANNNNGGGGGG!!! ALLAHUAKBARRRRRR!!!" and after that inlander's command, I see several shots of...

"WATCH OUT! ROCKETS!" I tried to warn my men, but alas, the initial volley of those weapons cleanly hit two tanks and the truck I was hiding behind... Fuck! This is a clearly a fully prepared ambush... this is not an accident! This is...

And... those British bombers bails themselves out. They fly too low... too easy to be blasted by those blasted Flaks! And looks like the survivors will bear some pock marks made by those shells... We will have no air support unless the British sent another wave... which was unlikely...

"Defensive positions! RALLY!" I gave the first command I can think of while emptying the clip of my sten gun toward those Inlanders' hiding place. I immediately reload my sten gun while running behind the only cover available right now, under the ruins of the upturned jeeps and trucks.

"Infantry, deploy your position and advance by cover! Tanks! Support the infantry advance!" I yelled at my radio, and at least, the Infantry riding behind my posisiton deploys themselves and advance, while the tanks providing both cover and supporting fires.

I can see some Inlander troops trying to move a flak cannon to aim at my position, so I held my sten gun and aim at them... they fall, but I did not want to take chances and aim at their exposed heads once more... A pity they forgot to use helmets it seem... only for those red and white headbands of inlander rebels and soft peci caps. Good, I can feel they are all die now... I lie down again and reload my sten gun with a fresh magazine... We must act now, where the inlanders' positions are opened... and before commiting to the inevitable charge...

"Platoon 1, Platoon 9, Platoon 11, Platoon 15, Follow me!" I shout and gave the code to the Infantry, and we make a mad dash toward the buildings that house one of those damned Flak cannons. Some Inlander troopers emerged from nearby bushes with their guns blazing, but as they are undisciplined bunch of rebels, my men easily take care of them.

"ALBECHT!" said one of my troopers looking that a man suddenly fall dead with blasted head.

"Careful men... They have snipers! CHARGE!!!" I said while gunning down several of those Inlanders that think they can sneak upon me from the flank. I can see Johann drive the Jeep toward me, trying to give me a ride... but...

"JOHANNN! WATCH OUT!!!" I screamed, but a young inlander rebel armed with a... Panzerfaust? Shot a rocket and I can only watch and wince over the explosion... Out of revenge, I aimed my sten gun and shot him dead at the chest and head.

"Captain! We have secured a flak cannon! Those Inlanders hide inside the buildings and..." said a man who try to talk with me, but he soon falls dead with a cracked head... the sniper...

"INSIDE THAT MUSHALA! THERE ARE SNIPERS INSIDE THAT MUSHALA! CHARGE!" I screamed and led my men inside that damned building. Fuck, we don't even have any chance outside of eliminating those snipers as quickly as possible, but behind me, I can heard some explosions, and it appears that two groups of inlanders have emerged from the forest... throwing grenades into our backs, and soon, some of my men died under encirclement... I can see smoking tanks as well...

Our only chance is seizing that Mushala as quickly as possible... and defend ourself before...

A tall, thin inlander wearing a blangkon*[2] aim at me with his sniper rifle... so that's the bastard....

I cranked my sten gun to...

"CLICK!"

SHIT...

And everything went black...

...

Is this the end...

...

God...

-Ray Westerling,1946

Quote of the year

To be fair, what will you say if you're facing a sniper in close range, reflexively try to shot him with your submachine gun... but... "CLICK"... your magazine is empty? :D
I know that IOTL Raymod Westerling is supposed to be a badass... I feel bad giving him such a cliche death... or it isn't?

Gloves Are Off...

1946, February 8 - Joint Allied-KNIL Troops led by Captain Raymond Westerling are ambushed by Soedirman's forces. Two British airplanes lost due to unexpected deployments of several 2cm Flak Cannons, which ripped apart the unsuspecting low flying B-24s. Several tanks, jeeps and trucks are either destroyed or captured by Soedirman's forces. Raymond Westerling himself are killed trying to to lead a charge against Soedirman's sniper positions. Out of 3000 Dutch and 2000 British troops deployed, around 1200 Allied/KNIL Soldiers dead, with further 3000 encircled by Republican troops and end up as Prisoners of war. The rest of them retreat back to Bandung in Panic. Soedirman's forces, numbered around 4000 ex PETA troops bolstered with 5000 local youths along with around 2500 re-armed Mudjahiddin fighters who fled from Sumedang and 12 2cm Flak Cannons, lost around 900 men and two Flak Cannon destroyed.

At night, upon receiving the news of total defeat in Cirebon, Gen Spoor and Hawthorn questions Van Mook about the unexpected Republican strength, especially about how they receive the Flak Cannons and Panzerfausts without the Allied knowledge. Douwes Dekker urged them to use a more subtle approaches and not committing harsh actions without proper planning, as well as reminding them that this could be seen as a thwarted Dutch aggression internationally. Van Mook accusing him of betraying the agreed NICA cause, but Douwes Dekker replies him with a suggestion to declare Westerling's action as a rogue one and claim that the Allied-NICA Forces are not informed of his endeavor. Gen Hawthorn, already voicing his opinion about caution, and Gen Spoor, who did advocate Westerling's forces but think them as deterrent, agreed with Douwes Dekker's plan.

1946, February 9 - British Foreign Minister Erenst Brevin giving a strongly worded letter to Van Mook, with a copy directly sent to Amsterdam, urging him to not interfering with the military operations, accounting all his blunders since October 1945.

Soedirman's victory over the Allied-KNIL Forces are greeted warmly by the populance. From Madjalengka, Indramayu, and Sumedang, former Mudjahiddin rebels flock into Soedirman's forces and declare their loyalty to the Republic.

Musso's forces crossed into Kuningan and hold an eight hour fighting against the KNIL Garrison positioned there. The KNIL Forces are routed and Laskar Rakjat, helped by local Republican Youths, formally took Kuningan from the Allied-NICA administration.

In China, PLA under Mao finished fortifying Shenzhen. KMT resistances are spread thin with only at the countryside they still hold some powers. Chiang Kai-Sek sent an US backed expedition to retake Shenzhen.

1946, February 10 - Republican administrators under Amir Sjariffudin and Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX arrived at Cirebon. They hold a closed meeting with Sultan Sepuh XII. Afterwards, several thousand Republican militias are raised in Cirebon.

Dutch Prime Minister Wim Schermerhorn, with explicit permission from Wilhelmina herself, forced the resignation of Van Mook from the post of Governor General of Netherland East Indies. As per Truman and Mac Arthur's suggestion, and to facilitate military operations better, the Netherland East Indies are put under the military governorship of General Simon H Spoor, with Abdul Kadir Widjojoadmodjo as Vice Governor-General.

Sultan Hamid II of Pontianak heard about the recent Republican victory at Cirebon, and told his advisors about his plan to evict the Allied-KNIL Garrison and declare his allegiance to Indonesia. The Pontianak soldiers are mobilized as quickly as possible.

Beria and Kim Il Sung march into Pyongyang, evicting the American sympathizers and killing some of them.

In London, Hatta met with several anticolonialist envoys to the UN.

1946, February 11 - Governor General Spoor planned a covert operation to assassinate Soedirman, Douews Dekker sent another Spekkoek cake...

Gen Spoor sends proposal to Sjahrir for "democratic partnership" between the Netherlands and Indonesia, but which still does not provide for real independence.

In Bonn, Germany, Joachim von Ribbentrop is cornered by Joint British-American taskforce. Due to severe gunfights resulting in 5 Allied soldiers, and 13 Nazi militias dead, Ribbentrop is summarily executed as per standing order of Eisenhower.

1946, February 12 - Sultan Hamid II of Pontianak formally declares his allegiance to the Republic. Brutal fighting explode in Pontianak and surrounding regions, with Sultan's soldiers bolstered by Republican youths trying to driving off Allied Garrison back into the sea. Allied aircrafts bombard Pontianak in revenge.

Clash in Bali between Pro Republican forces under Admiral Soetomo, I Gusti Ngurah Rai, and Anak Agung Panji Tisna; against the pro Dutch forces under Tjokroda Gde Raka Sukawati backed by Joint British-Australian Navy. Both sides sustained heavy casualities, Buleleng are bombarded by Allied aircrafts, but the flak cannons present in KRI Buaja Murka and the prepared positions on land caused heavy casualities among Allied Bombers. Allied forces will soon retreat back to North Australia.

Australia re-mobilize some of the returning Australian troops to help the Allied efforts in Dutch East Indies.

1946, February 13 - Allied counterattack in Pontianak, continuing aerial bombardments causing heavy causalities to Sultan Hamid II's forces. British troops in Sabah and Serawak are mobilized to press toward Pontianak.

Dayak troops in Borneo declare their allegiance to the Dutch. Joining British efforts to retake Pontianak.

1946, February 14 - Stalin informed Soekarno about another shipments of weaponaries, that will arrive soon in Semarang via seized German submarines. In return, Stalin asked for an offensive against Allied port in Singapore to be held at least two months after the arrival of the Submarines. Singapore must be held by Indonesian forces so the Soviet forces can supply them with more sort of weaponaries. Sjahrir and Amir Sjarifuddin agreed with Stalin's plan, as do Soekarno, who due to distance and security, failed to contact Hatta*[1].

*) Uh, well... to be fair, after long victorious streak... Indonesian troops can take Singapore with Soviet-supplied ex-nazi weaponaries, right? Nothing could go wrong, right? Nothing could go wrong...

Uh... writer's block?

For somewhat reasons I just got a writer's block, oh well... Indonesian Invasion of Singapore will commence in around May or June... but still... I still can't think about skipping the chronological order... Uh especially after the Dutch's string of defeats, with clear Soviet-leaning Republic of Indonesia I can actually imagine... Allied forces will move on full strength there... but still... writer's block...

need some inputs about the next logical step used by Allies, especially since Indonesian forces actually made a streak of victories while pissing off Australians and Americans (the exact opposite of what happened IOTL). And what about the 'nuke use' treshold?

Uhm nope, but I do admit I have a bad case of writers block now, considering the son of the man who I want to put in as traitor just end up as campaigner for our presidential candidate... Uh, talk about... Possibility to be sued for slander... (Yeah, even if that was Aliernate history...)

Still consulting sometimes with TheTimeRanger, its gonna stuck for a while because he's got some tests to do as well.
