Long Live Indonesia! Long Live The Mahasultan! ( Alternate Indonesia TL )

Downpours of Seven Days...

Downpours of Seven Days...

---

1946, January 1 - Uneasy truce between the Republican Forces and the Dutch-Allied Forces. There are issues about Islamic mobilizations in Minangkabau. Soekarno worried about the safety of Hatta.

In Aceh, Teuku Nyak Arief, leader of the noble aristocracy is captured by Mujahiddin forces under Teuku Daud Shah.

In North Sumatera, tension runs high between the Bataks and the Malays. Allied forces stationed there clearly siding with the Bataks. Admiral Patterson voiced his concern about this religious tension because it starts to spread into British Malayan peninsula.

In Padang, Hatta hold a private meeting with Hadji Abdoel Malik Karim Amroellah, both are concerned about the infighting and discuss how to minimize the damage to the Republican cause.

Burhanuddin Harahap and Moewardi plead Soekarno to release Natsir from prison. Soekarno asked them both about their loyalty, and they answered their loyalty lies in Indonesian people. Soekarno asked them again about their opinion of the Mudjahiddin rebellion in Aceh and now West Java, both answered that the Mudjahiddin only want a real freedom, they did not trust the Western Imperialists, and they did not trust the Godless Communists either. Soekarno asked them at the last time about their opinion to quell the Mudjahiddin rebellion, they demand Natsir to be released and more pressure toward the Allied occupation forces. Soekarno ordered his guard to seize both men and imprison them for treason. Burhanuddin Harahap are imprisoned, but Moewardi escaped, thanks to his sympathizers at the army. Moewardi will later escape to Padang to meet Hatta. Three Republican soldiers and two ex members of Barisan Pelopor dies from the short outbreak of hostility regarding Moewardi's escape.

1946, January 2 - Musso arrives in West Java, the Communist Laskar scour Cirebon to look for Mudjahiddin sympathizers. Many local ulama and Islamic intellectuals are murdered.

British airplanes bombard Mudjahiddin held Cianjur and Sukabumi. The confused civil refugees run for their life to Garut. Kartosoewirjo's closest cadres follow him to Cimahi.

1946, January 3 - Laskar Rakjat leave Cirebon for Sumedang under Musso. DN Aidit raised another Communist Laskar reinforcements in Pekalongan and Banjarnegara. Semaun raised local Communist Laskar in Purwakarta.

Soekarno almost ordered the execution of Natsir and Burhanuddin Harahap, but Wachid Hasjim argues for their defense. Wachid Hasjim agreed to go to Padang to persuade Hatta for coming back to Java, to help resolve this infighting. Wachid Hasjim will board a military plane for Padang with a small entourage of NU and Muhammadiyah representatives.

Van Mook, Abdul Kadir Widjojoatmodjo, and Douwes Dekker held an internal NICA discussion about the latest infighting between the pro independence Republicans. Van Mook's argument about the current infighting led to the conclusion that the Indonesians are unready for total Independence. Douwes Dekker reluctantly agreed with Van Mook's arguments, but asked to discuss this thing with Soewardi Soerjaningrat. Van Mook gave Douwes Dekker permission and full authorization to act as Dutch liaison to the Republicans. Douwes Dekker promised that he will work his hardest to calm the infighting between Indonesian politicians, but he tell Van Mook once more that he agreed to do this to avoid further unnecessary bloodshed as well as to secure the chance of Indonesian Independence.

Allied commandos land in Pidie.

1946, January 4 - Two Communist Laskars under Musso and Semaun rendezvous at Subang. Both scour Subang to look for Islamic sympathizers and murdering Islamic intellectuals.

Soekarno ordered DN Aidit to organize further militia forces, specifically calling him to incorporate Nationalist elements among the troops instead of mostly communist forces, they will be sent to land on Aceh by sea later.

Douwes Dekker meet with Soewardi Soerjaningrat, both agreed that this infighting are madness, this infighting hurts the chance for full Independence, and propose for better cooperation with the NICA. Soewardi Soerjaningrat himself now asked the very question he has in his head about Douwes Dekker's sudden willingness to cooperate in the Dutch side, Douwes Dekker then tell him in a secret about how he was basically forced to do this, and only his awareness of a possible Communist plot caused him to approach independence from the other side. Douwes Dekker then reaffirms his passion about total Indonesian Independence, but at this time, the Dutch must believe he is a man willing to technically negotiate in their behalf, nobody else should knew about his real position at this time except Soewardi Sorjaningrat.

Wachid Hasjim arrives in Padang.

In British Malayan Peninsulla, Datuk Onn Bin Jaffar raises a Militia army made from Malays to fill the gap left by British forces that was sent to Aceh. With tension in Dutch East Indie go really high, British administrations are afraid something will happen in their garrison's absence.

1946, January 5 - Wachid Hasjim meet with Hatta and Hamka. Hatta suggest them to wait for the arrival of Moewardi, and discuss about inter-Republican congress to be held to end this infighting. In the meanwhile, Wachid Hasjim sent an envoy to Daud Beureueh and Teuku Daud Shah, urging them to cease hostilities and discuss things with the other Republicans.

Teuku Nyak Arief released from Mudjahiddin Prison by Allied commandos, he will be fled immediately to Jakarta for medical treatments.

Xiangyang Massacre in China, Chiang Kai Sek ordered KMT Troops to search for Communist sympathizers in Xiangyang. Local PLA troops are taken off guard and massacred. Chiang Kai Sek will later deny that his order involving mass murder of communists. Soviet army in Manchuria under Marshal Malinovsky are enraged. Beria ordered Mao Zedong to secure Shenzhen harbor.

Beria contacted Kim Il Sung to reinforce his troop positions in Korea and bolster his ranks with new recruits.

1946, January 6 - Massacre of the Ummah in Sumedang. Confused civil refugees from British bombings go to Sumedang to search for food. They meet with Communist Laskar under Musso and Semaun, after initially think that the Communists are here to help them, and the Communists think that they are just simple civil refugees, the Refugees said that they are supporting Kartosoewirjo's jihad against the Western opressors. That was all the justifications the Communists need to open fire against the unarmed refugees, seven thousand refugees are murdered by Communist laskars, claiming the refugees as Mudjahiddin rebels.

Moewardi arrived at Hatta's residence in the morning. Hatta sent a telegram to Soekarno, saying his intent to go back to discuss things at Jogjakarta if Soekarno promised to not prolong the incidents with Burhanuddin Harahap and Moewardi. They will contact the NICA to provide them with air transport, Moewardi is not to be arrested and Burhanuddin Harahap must be released first as a token of goodwill. He then said his hope to end this madness and his faith in gaining international recognition for Indonesian Independence, despite the setback formed from this infighting. Later, Hatta meet with the local elders and Republican soldiers in Padang, urging them to stop this madness and think with calm heads, the local Islamic militia forces at Minangkabau agreed to lay down their weapons and report peacefully to the Republican garrison, they will await further orders for demobilization peacefully.

Douwes Dekker and Soewardi Soerjaningrat held an informal meeting with the other leaders at Jogjakarta, including Soekarno, Sjahrir, and Amir Sjarifuddin. All agreed to stop the infighting and focus upon reconciliation, but Amir Sjarifuddin advise Soekarno to keep Natsir at a house arrest instead of releasing him or keeping him in prison. Amir Sjarifuddin also urging the other leaders to let the Communist Laskars run their campaign in West Java to find and capture Kartosoewirjo because what he has done is straight up treason against the Republican Government.

Major battle between Communist PLA forces against US backed KMT forces in the outskirt of Xiangyang. Mao Zedong marched south to secure Shenzhen port. Beria go to Pyongyang to discuss and direct things with Kim Il Sung.

1946, January 7 - Communist Laskar under Musso and Semaun finally had a direct contact with Mudjahiddin under Kartosoewirjo in Cimahi and Bandung. Open fighting will ensue for a week.

Before dawn in Europe, British occupation base at Hamburg, Germany are bombed by unknown group using Nazi nerve agent, Sarin. This attack claimed 27 Allied troops dead, including 2 Americans and 1 French, with more than a hundred fall victim to the effects of the Nerve agent. This terror attack is done almost simultaneously with the Austrian terror attack.

A mysterious car explode in a busy road inside the British occupation zone at Vienna, Austria. 3 British and 1 Soviet troops reported dead, along with 5 Austrian civilians. Allied authorities initially claim both attacks as a result of Nazi insurgency. Both accidents raised Allied alarm in Europe.

Stalin send more reinforcements to Soviet occupied Manchuria.

Hatta, Hamka, Wachid Hasjim, and Moewardi arrive in Maguwo airport, Jogjakarta. Soekarno release Burhanuddin Harahap from custody. Soewardi Soerjaningrat and Douwes Dekker joined the initial informal talks held at Seturan.

At Midnight in Jakarta, Admiral Patterson informed Van Mook of sudden plan of earlier withdrawal of British Forces due to sudden 'Nazi insurrection' in Germany. British forces will be withdrawn from Dutch East Indies to help securing Allied Occupation Zones in Germany and Austria.

*NOTE) Uh guys, looks like I've outdone myself this time lol... what just started as Asia focused timeline is now having an European event?
Don't worry, next time we'll back to primarily Indonesian events with some events happened in east Asia as well...
But seriously? Nazi insurgency? aimed at the British? BRITISH? Is that means the Dutch forces in Indonesia are on their own sooner than later?
... you may think am I nuts? I said before that the Dutch will act smarter without idiot balls... but now I just... weakening them?
... seriously you all think about that? ... but if you read about Dutch occupation period in Indonesia... who... forbid them to put their hands into an open and defenseless cookie jar when they have their chance? ... who?
Whoops, you can start to see the culprit yes? But don't worry, this all have a purpose that shall be revealed in time..
Stay tuned!

Very interesting to see this unfold. A few comments though:
1. Teuku Hasan di Tiro was a student in Jogjakarta at the time, so I doubt that he could lead an insurgency up there around this era.
2. EFE Douwes Dekker is one tough anarchist, cooperating with the Dutch would be the last thing in his mind, in my opinion. Also, he would be enraged if someone goes about saying "Indonesians are not ready for independence".
3. I like how you're switching the position of Islamists and leftists, having Natsir arrested instead. Which reminds me, what's Amir Sjarifuddin up to? What about Tan Malaka and Murba?

Considered me subscribed, though. This is an interesting read! :)

1... Hwoops... looks like I must change that.... Thank you for your correction then... (damn skimming off history books on ipad... ouch... ouch... let's look for another hardline muslim Acehnese figure...)

2. The Anarchist is EDUARD Douwes Dekker, better known with his pen name Multatuli. And he dies in 1887... This Douwes Dekker in this time lins = ERENST Douwes Dekker (grandson of EDUARD), ERENST Douwes Dekker is the founder of Indische Partij, and was better known as the Indo-Dutch member of "Tiga Serangkai" alongside Dr Cipto, and Ki Hadjar Dewantara (Still named Soweardi Soerdjaningrat in 1945). this ERENST Douwes Dekker is known for his Indo-Dutch Nationalism and press for total independence resulting in equal footing of the Dutch and the Indonesian natives. Yeah, he's quite the hardline Republican and IOTL deemed dangerous advocate of total independence, and because he is the mentor of several Nationalist Figures. But he is also one of the strongest anticommunist figure... and ITTL... you see...

Add : In Indonesian articles, he is often refered with his Muslim name, Danudirja Setiabudi when he convert to Islam in 1947. But in 1945, he was still an atheist you see...

3. Tan Malaka will be coming a bit later, remember that outside of the leftist groups, he was quite unpopular to the other nationalists, and he was outside the Republican government authority. Ah yes, You did notice that I reversed the position of communists and Islamists. :D
Yeah, the Commies are definitely up to something...

I know a lot of people confuse the two, but seriously, Eduard Douwes Dekker is the anarchist. He wrote extensively against collaborating with the Dutch. Yes, he was anti-communist, but the odds of him collaborating with the Dutch is very, very unlikely. He isn't one to lick his own spit you know.

EDIT: Yes, I am aware of his Islamic name in Indonesia sources. I am not well aware of him being an atheist in 1945. I have to admit that most of my research on him is on his activities in the 1920s. Can you give me a source?

Nah man, EFE Douwes Dekker is the anarchist. He wrote extensively against collaborating with the Dutch. Yes, he was anti-communist, but the odds of him collaborating with the Dutch is very, very unlikely. He isn't one to lick his own spit you know.

Oh well, the one who called Ernest Douwes Dekker as Anarchist is the Dutch Communist Leader Henk Sneevliet. But if he is an anarchist, why did he create rigorous academic institute (Ksatrian Insitute), and deeply involved with Soewardi Sordjaningrat's Education reform plan?

IOTL, he was exiled in Suriname, and only back to Indonesia in 1947. He is immediately appointed as Non Portfolio State Minister (Menteri Negara tanpa Portfolio) as the advice of Soewardi Soerjaningrat to Soekarno and Sjahrir. And yeah, he will later resign after nine months because his clash with a certain Amir Sjarifuddin, and indeed, Amir Sjarifuddin called him as 'Anarchist' again...

Ah, as you're another Indonesian, I suggest you to read more of him in : Douwes Dekker : Sang Inspirator Revolusi. (Bundel Artikel Majalah Tempo)
this book explained clearly about his political positions as well as his later clash with the leftist elements after Indonesian independence. Yeah, working with the Dutch is stretching things a bit, but remember the POD in this TL is Stalin's intervention for Indonesian government. Musso is sent three years earlier, with better supports, as well as *SPOILER*... It's not much a stretch for Douwes Dekker to work with the Dutch to avoid Indonesia fall into the Commies' hands, he will work in the Dutch's frameworks as long as Independence is the end result.

Alright, maybe anarchist was too strong of a word. But he was indeed a radical, as he did not believe in collaboration with imperialists. He believed that independence can only truly be achieved by force. It was him who influenced much of Soekarno's political views, especially in the power of the masses and the use of that power to rid the imperialists.

Douwes Dekker working with the Dutch is a big big big stretch. Given the right circumstances, it might happen, but as a last resort. Also, if the Dutch turn to Douwes Dekker ITTL it might show how desperate they are. Douwes Dekker is in no way easy to control. Dutch sources paint him as a fiery, passionate, uncontrollable man. One thing he would never agree to is that Indonesians are not ready for independence. If it was worded differently, maybe.

Alright, due to some other Indonesians start calling this timeline ASB...

Uh after mulling and thinking about it, I do some 'minor' change in Douwes Dekker and NICA subplot, at least to his friend Soeweardi Soerjaningrat (and the readers), he made his true loyalties clear, as his cooperation with NICA are done out of the Dutch's desperation. So yeah, it was supposed to be a secret, but to avoid Indonesians point this out as an almost ASB... :p

yeah, the Dutch start this timeline with desperate morale due to much earlier Soviet recognition and help for the Republic of Indonesia. Especially with the early arrival of Musso and Stalin's gamble to strengthten Indonesian positions for a future nefarious use.

also replacing Hassan Tiro with Daud Shah, another pro Islamist leader.

---

Well? if you know how OTL Sultan HB IX is turned out, you do realize that in the opening post... I made it clear that the Sultan will end up as the ONLY possible rallying point for Indonesian Independence right?

And oh well, this implies... clusterfuck of infightings and external forces exploiting the resulting chaos. And oh yeah, due to Stalinian's influence instead of the later Khruschevian ones, communist forces in Indonesia will present as a larger, stronger force...

Heck, I do already have a rough storyline, and if I just put a minor difference regarding the bias of this TL, we will have a plausible Communist Indonesia fighting alongside Soviet Union in the Third World War instead of Monarchist Indonesia.

Thanks for all the suggestions and criticisms guys! :D

Hatta's Gamble

Hatta's Gamble

---

1946, January 8 - Early morning, Hatta sent a telegram to Ferdinand Lumban Tobing at North Sumatera, urging him to immediately hold the mobilization of Christian Batak militia to reduce tension between the Muslim Mudjahiddin and Allied-backed Christians. He also reconfirming that the Republic did not want the Takengon Accident escalated, and the issues will be resolved by peaceful negotiations, not by arms.

Douwes Dekker sent a message to the Allied authorities and Van Mook, insisting them to stop their bombing of Mudjahiddin strongholds over Aceh and West Java, citing inter-Republican efforts for a peace talks is underway. Faced with possible sudden recall to Europe, Admiral Patterson complies despite Van Mook's objections.

Despite the objection of the Islamists, Amir Sjarifuddin appoint Tan Malaka to be sent to West Java to negotiate the surrender of Kartosoewirjo's Mudjahiddin army to the Communist Laskars.

Wachid Hasjim and Hamka sent an envoy to Kartosoewirjo, ordering him to stand down and surrender to Nationalist formation at Bogor instead of the Communist Laskars.

Formal Republican negotiation at Seturan begins, Hatta begun the negotiation with a demand to Soekarno; Release Natsir from the house arrest, and lift the ban for Masyumi and PSII. Amir Sjarifuddin strongly object Hatta's demand, but Soekarno, seeing the damage done by inter Republican infighting, reluctantly agrees to give in for Hatta's demand. Natsir is released from the arrest, in a moment of gratefulness, he prostrate to the ground and offered a grateful pray to Allah (Sujud Syukur).

Harry S Truman, Charles de Gaulle, and Clement Attlee asked Stalin to appoint a joint investigation taskforce for the gas-bombing in Hamburg and car bombing in Vienna. The Denazification process in Germany intensified, all Germany and Austria is put under curfew. British and French government withhold their demobilization plan for an indeterminate time.

1946, January 9 - Daud Beureueh agreed to stand down after the Allies agree to cease their bombing campaign and releasing Mudjahiddin prisoners. He gave a formal apology for the fate of Hadji Masjkur. Soekarno leave to Jakarta for private discussion with Teuku Nyak Arief soon afterwards.

The second day of negotiation begins with an argument between Amir Sjariffudin and Hatta, Hatta insisted the immediate removal of the Communist Laskars from West Java while Amir Sjariffudin argued about Kartosoewirjo's surrender. Soerjadi Soerjaningrat, Douwes Dekker, and Duke Mangkunegara VIII act as the moderators between different Republican factions.

The situation in West Java actually worsened after Kartosoewirjo's Mudjahiddin learned about the massacre at Sumedang. He publically dubbed the Communists' actions as Massacre of the Believers/Ummah (Pembantaian Ummat). Semaun claimed that those are not massacre, but an armed contact after the Mudjahiddin's provocations.

Van Mook issued an order for the Mudjahiddin to surrender to the Allied force instead of the Communists. Captain Raymond Westerling of the KNIL secured Bandung from Mudjahiddin forces but ordered to tolerate the presence of Nationalist or Communist Republican Soldiers. This will actually aggravate the Mudjahiddin in West Java for worse.

In Germany, tensions run high as the Allied occupation force tightens the security, protests occured in several German towns over the tighter security and forced searching of the German houses. Several buildings are burned at Berlin.

1946, January 10 - Soerjadi Soerjaningrat offered four points of inter-Indonesian cooperations, all backed by Douwes Dekker, Duke Mangkunegara VIII, Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX, Hatta, Sjahrir, Soedirman, and Amir Sjarifuddin. The four points is :
1) All Republican forces and pro-independence groups will agree for a two months truce. The Republican Army will be sent to enforce peace at the problem regions, but will not force a disarmament.
2) Forced conversion is forbidden, the Republic agrees for a temporary guarantee to ensure the freedom of religion, as well as the freedom to not choosing any religion. Any groups who wish to upheld the Sharia must offer their opinion in a formal consensus agreement. This guarantee is counted as temporary to provide a ground for later rulings in said consensus.
3) There will be no form of future punishments for those who involved in the infighting, but agreed to follow this consensus, provided that they are not engage in hostile (in)fighting anymore.
4) Reaffirms the formal authority of the Republic of Indonesia under President Soekarno and Prime Minister Sjahrir as the final authority.

Van Mook sent a Telegram to Douwes Dekker over the last point of Seturan negotiation, Douwes Dekker will later answer it as necessary to quell the armed infighting.

Tan Malaka hold a private meeting with Musso and Semaun, all agreed to gave another ultimatum for the Mudjahiddin under Kartosoewirjo to surrender either to the Nationalist forces stationed at Bogor, or their Communist Laskars stationed at Cimahi.

Before dawn, in a moment of confusion all over Germany and Austria, Otto Skorzeny led an armed escape of the Nazi Prisoners, an unspecified number of American and Soviet guards are murdered and their weapons taken. Before the Allied authority are able to tighten their security, Skorzeny succeeded to release another group of Nazi Prisoners. Hermann Goring, Joachim von Ribbentrop, Josef Mengele, and Albert Speer are counted among those who escaped.

Both Georgy Zhukov and Vasily Sokolovsky commit suicide over the grand escape of Nazi Prisoners, Zhukov are noticed to utter a desperate words before he ate his pistol : "We did not forsee this... machine gun..." (in Russian). Only Alexander Gorbatov's quick rallying order from Stalin himself save the Soviet occupation zone in Germany from falling into a complete Chaos. Dwight D Eisenhower ordered American Occupation Force to do a full cooperation with the Soviet Force, citing his fear about possible Nazi uprising in Germany.

At the afternoon, Winston Churchill hold a private emergency meeting with Clement Attlee and De Gaulle in Caen. British and French troops are reorganized for the preparations of possible "Nazi Uprising". Harry S Truman will receive an encoded message from this meeting next day.

1946, January 11 - Daud Beureueh formally sign the consensus of understanding with Ferdinand Lumban Tobing at Medan, both agreed to not prolong the escalation of hostility, as well as agreed for Nationalist troops from West and Central Sumatera to be garrisoned in Aceh for temporary measures.

Soekarno arrived again in Seturan with Teuku Nyak Arief. Comromises over the situation in Aceh are drawn and formal pardons will be issued.

Hatta is appointed as co-Prime Minister with Sjahrir, they agreed to do a joint consensus for cabinet reshuffle later. Amir Sjariffudin stayed as Vice President.

Natsir, Burhanuddin Harahap, and Moewardi are formally readmitted at the Republican Government. Republican Soldiers coming from Barisan Pelopor and Masyumi sympathizers will be temporarily sent to help pacify West Java along with Nationalist forces under Soedirman.

The situation in West Java are still uncontrolled, Mudjahiddin under Kartosoewirjo still refuse to surrender and continue to be hostile against the Communist and Allied forces. Tan Malaka reports that the situation is "hopeless unless Kartosoewirjo is arrested".

Eisenhower declares a massive search operations against the escaped Nazi leaders. French and British troops are sent as reinforcements to completely close the German and Austrian borders. Soviet sent massive reinforcements to enact emergency orders in Eastern Europe.

Fransisco Franco of Spain declares his non involvement in the "Nazi Insurrection Plot", Spanish troops start to amass at the Spanish-French Border.

Jewish migration to Israel intensifies from Western Europe. Stalin ordered the Soviet Troops to tolerate Jewish emigrants as long as they did not carry too much 'personal possessions' and optimally sign the surrender of their properties.

Italian communist militias patrol the north to avoid Nazi leaders crossing their border.

MacArthur ordered more intensive patrol to American Occupation zones in Japan. Emperor Hirohito is placed under 'protection' personally overseen by MacArthur himself. The Japanese War Criminals are moved to an unspecified location in the Pacific, all trials and investigation are withold.

1946, January 12 - Van Mook appoint Christiaan Soumokil as NICA Administrator of Eastern regions to reduce tensions between the Allied-KNIL forces and the locals.

Raymond Westerling hold an informal meeting with Tan Malaka, no agreement achieved between them.

Soedirman arrives in Garut, Semaun is sent to meet him and coordinate their efforts against Kartosoewirjo.

Inter-Republican negotiations at Seturan formally ended. Soekarno personally apologizes to Hatta over the recent troubles.

Admiral Yaichiro Shibata formally convert to Christianity and took a Baptist name of Joelianto Soelaiman, the Baptism are performed by Ev. Tan King Ien of the Tiong Hoa Kie Tok Kauw Hwee Church in Kudus. Siaw Giok Tjhan and TB Simatupang are noticed to be present at Shibata's Baptism. He will soon receive formal Indonesian citizenship and shed his Japanese one. Later in the future, many debates about his sincerity of conversion, citing his dodging of possible war crimes trial in Japan, as well as immediate appointment in Eastern Indonesian Navy along with the majority of the Japanese deserters as their motivation since many of them converted to Christianity.

Open hostilities occured between Soviet Manchurian troops and the KMT, Beria accused the KMT troops raiding the Soviet supply depot, Chiang Kai Sek mentioned that it was purely an accident.

Beria sent a secured telegram to Amir Sjariffudin. Urging him to press for the installment of pro Communist governors in Central and East Java.

A brutal ambush occured in Allied camp at Frankurt, 28 American, 9 French, and 3 British troops dead with the weapons stolen. The perpetrator of this massacre are firmly identified to be led by Otto Skorzeny himself. A massive search supported by aircrafts later result in the downing of two unspecified aircraft due sudden fire by unidentified German Aircraft believed to be personally pilotted by Hermann Goring himself, 5 more American air crews dead. Both the ground forces under Skorzeny and Goring's mysterious Aircraft escaped further chase. Truman personally commented that whoever behind this must be shot on sight instead of being captured, with Eisenhower issuing the shot on sight order over the escaped Nazi prisoners.

1946, January 13 - Kartosoewirdjo surrender to Soedirman, informing him over the Communist massacre of Muslims in Sumedang. Soedirman are enraged, but wary of this news as yet another plot to made him fight the Communists, ordered his men to arrest him and not listen to his accusation. (He will later personally regret about this particular decision in the future)

Hatta, along with Soewardi Soerjaningrat made a public announcement over the end of hostilities, but choose to maintain the curfew over another week to analyze the situations.

Amir Sjarifuddin hold a closed meeting with Soekarno and Sjahrir.

Hostile contact of PLA forces against KMT occures everywhere in China, PLA forces expel KMT troops from Shenzhen.

1946, January 14 - Kartosoewirdjo are flown to Surakarta, to be held until further notice. Soedirman ordered Musso to lead his Laskar back to central Java and wait for order of Soekarno, Soedirman himself will stay in Sumedang to maintain the peace in West Java.

Raymond Westerling asked the Allied forces to help him reinforce Dutch held Bandung. Some of the force formerly serve under General Hawthorn are sent. General Hawthorn himself will led parts of the British army to go back to Europe.

Gandhi and Gen Mallaby arrived in India along with the survivors of 49th Indian Infantry, Lord Mountbatten and Jawaharlal Nehru hold a reception ceremony, they will be formally demobilized afterwards.

Truman ordered MacArthur to pull some US division from China to further secure Japan from the potential of Imperial insurrections despite MacArthur's objection. He reluctantly agreed with the plan, but asked for full authority to receive and use three atomic bombs, which was granted by Truman.

The situation in German and Austria grow uncontrolled, Chancellor of Austria Leopold Figl and his guards are found murdered. Some German Youths in Berlin doing protests while shouting "Sieg Heil! Heil Hitler!" and for which they are arrested as Nazi Sympathizers in American camp. Soviet occupation force commented that they will shot the Nazi sympathizers on sight just to be sure. Shot on sight order are issued for Otto Skorzeny.

*) Alright, the situation in Indonesia should be calmer for a time now, but Stalin's miscalculation will definitely bite his Communist ass (and Western Allies too) and made him regret it...

And BTW, have you heard about a (fringe) rumours about Adolf Hitler secretly escaped and live in Indonesia...? You know where this story's plot will arrive, yes?

stay tuned

As entertaining as it would be for Indonesia to go all Boys from Brazil, wouldn't Argentina be closer and safer for those escaping Nazis?

As entertaining as it would be for Indonesia to go all Boys from Brazil, wouldn't Argentina be closer and safer for those escaping Nazis?

They won't directly go to Indonesia.

Perhaps yes, they will head to their OTL destination first, but due to later ... *blah* *blah* *blah* more successful.. *blah* *blah* *blah*...

"Those racist hypocrites, picking me because I has their blood... but no matter, working behind enemy line did give me some insight about their long term plan over us."
"Wash hands, but still want our people's toils? still want what is grown by bumi pertiwi?*[3] to finance their little country back there in Europe?"
"We are their most precious jewels, and yes, I did have mutual concerns with the Dutch, about the fate of Indo(-Dutch) people. Some of the most radical figures on your side, indiscriminately tought that everyone with londo blood must leave from here. They called the Londo as racists, but they are the same, only different in their targets."
"Indeed, even they did not think about what the real Nationalism is, they are racists that only want Indonesia for their own group. Leave them in charge, and we can predict Indonesia will soon fall into infighting..."
"Like this time?"

"Almost, it can be worse..."
"Explain worse..."

"The Islamic groups, they can be headstrong sometimes..."
"Sometimes? What I see is they blown a minor difference into a full blown war, and you know how it hurt our chance of total Independence?"
"The Londo said they feel Indonesians are not ready, aren't you?"
"To my face, I feel like they spit on my face, if only their warning about possible communist takeover is not a very real possibility..."
"I know, but Soekarno did not heed my warning. To his eyes, Stalin is just another opportunity to be used, even when he clearly shown that he has a real stake inside the Communist party."
"Did he blind and think Stalin are just another idealistic anti imperialist figure? Or does he start to be corrupted by holding power?"
"The former is unlikely, the later is what I am afraid of..."
"The Communists tempted him with more power, aren't they?"
"You can't hit the mark closer, the imprisonment of the muslim movement leaders could be the start of something darker."
"We must always keep our guard from temptations, lest we found we are no different than our enemies."
"Speaking of which, I wonder what if the Communists did not tempt him with..."
"I do still has hope that he will realize his errors, and back to his old, idealistic self..."
"Let's not talking about that for awhile. He is near..."
"But our friend will be most delighted if we update his knowledge about the current politics right?"
"Hahaha, I think he must likely knew about our current position already, I wish to discuss some points with him but..."
"Me too..."
"Alright, we can start this and..."
"Allow me to follow your words... it is to show my respect for him... and for the others who sacrificed their life for the betterment of Indonesia."
"Alright..."
"Go on..."
"..."
"..."
"You can feel it?"
"Yes, he is here..."
"At least from us, he knew that we have savoured Independence."
"Not quite I'm afraid. Nominally under the law, our land is still under technical rule of the Dutch Crown. And I prefered something more romantic, hahahah..."
"Me too, when Indonesia stand as equal to the other Nations..."
"That's our dream, and we will fight for it. We will not trading for temporary power to sold ourselves under the rule of new overlord in Moscow."
"He is smiling to us..."
"Yeah..."
"Now we better go back to the car, the rain only pours more instead of less...
"How fitting... "
"You remember much about him..."
"Of course, whodid not..."
"Let's hope our students did not turn as stupid."
"Yeah, for the united Republic! For status as equals of the other nations.
"For him!"
"For him!"

1) Indonesian acronym for January, literally translated as "rains everyday"
2) Degratory Javanese terms for Dutchmen.
3) Indonesian for Motherland.

I miss living in Indonesia a bit I must admit, and this will nicely complement my autodidactic studies of Indonesian history. Definitely subscribed.

hmm, very interesting so far. I wonder what will happen to Soekarno if he continue this way, because in OTL, Soekarno's willingness to crush the communist at 1948 is the thing that convinced western powers that the republican are anti-communist and pushed the Dutch to recognize Indonesia's inddependence, only for western power to see Soekarno using the communist to strenghten his power later.

we all know what happened to Soekarno when he tried to use the Communist for the sake of his power. so, what will happen if he tried to do that during the war of independence....

by the way, subscribed :D

Gradations of Calm and Chaos

Gradations of Calm and Chaos

---

1946, January 15 - Eduard Douwes Dekker and Soewardi Soerjaningrat visit the grave of their friend, Tjipto Mangoenkoesoemo at Ambarawa. This visit is secretly monitored by Republican spy under the order of Soekarno. After learning the spy's report, Soekarno only smiles, dismiss the spy with a bonus, and informing both Hatta and Sjahrir to keep this as a secret.

Soekarno, Hatta, Sjahrir, and Amir Sjariffudin worked a rough draft for the upcoming refinements of Constitution

Van Mook's visit to Bandung, due to increasing Republican presence, and as a de-facto hub of economy as well as de-jure capital of the Republican forces. NICA planned to move the central command of military operation at Bandung, taking account of the local support for the Dutch administration (thanks to both the Mudjahiddin as well as the Communists), as well as the easily defensible position.

The unrests in Germany are still uncontrolled, but nothing major happened yet.

1946, January 16 - UN General Assembly hold a session, they immediately discuss an utmost concern about the condition in Germany and Austria. A couple of third world nations try to bring the issues of decolonizations, but due to pressures over the 'more important' issues of Nazi uprisings, they are quietly swept under the rug. Only Soviet Union hold an openly sympathetic opinion with this issues, but still decide to focus in the more important Nazi uprisings.

Soekarno personally request a sudden, closed meeting personally with Douwes Dekker. Only Soewardi Soerjaningrat, Hatta, and Sjahrir knows about the meeting that was hold on Soewardi's own house. They discuss much about personal issues, and later touch about the desperate situation on the side of NICA. In this very meeting, Soekarno admitted about the Stalin and Beria's plan about Indonesia (Due to Douwes Dekker voice his uneasiness about Soekarno's intrusion of privacy, at the day before). Soekarno outs Stalin's information/plan to all five of them:
-
1) The Soviet Union is concerned about the oppression of the Communists at the hands of The Japanese occupiers. Stalin urged Soekarno to work for better condition of the lower class people of the proletariat.
2) The Soviet Union is concerned about the use of Western Allies' troops to oppress the Indonesians, and their clear intention to return the Indonesians back under the Dutch yoke.
3) The Soviet Union is concerned about the British, French, and American opinions regarding the decolonization process. Although the Soviet openly say that American public support for decolonization is quite strong, the Soviet notices that the American government support is quite specific at a time. Beria personally suggests the Republican Indonesian government to add more efforts into International Diplomacy, as well as appointing an observer to the newly formed UN.
4) Due to recent Western Allies' aggression against Indonesia, the Soviet agrees to give help in a form of military equipments. The Soviet Union only want Indonesian government to support and if they can, help the struggle against Imperialist claws in East Asia. Stalin himself personally asked Soekarno to help China relieve their hunger due to effects of earlier Japanese and later Allied occupations. Unmarked cargo ships will be provided by Soviet Union itself.
5) And as the matter of International opinions, Stalin personally asked Soekarno to support most of the anti colonialist, anti imperialist sentiments worldwide.
6) After the stabilization of security and the Dutch finally acknowledging total Indonesian Independence, Soviet Union suggest Indonesia to held a Fair and Democratic election to legitimate the Indonesian government at the parts of the populance. The Soviet Union, however, suggests that the religious-toned parties to be banned, because they could introduce disunion and discrimination against the rest of the people.
-
Other than the first point, which everyone found it was immediately obvious, all of them agreed with four of the points. But Hatta, Douwes Dekker, and Soewardi Soerjaningrat point out about the fourth point. They did not say they disagree with the fight against colonialism and imperialism, but they suggest Soekarno to not giving food help without consulting with the cabinet advisors first. Some regions in lesser Sunda islands, as well as the deep pockets of Kalimantan still undergo a postwar famine period due to their still limited agricultural productions. All agreed with Soekarno to keep the deals with the Soviet secret, however, but Douwes Dekker point out about no one giving a deal that seems too good to be true, and actually advise Soekarno against putting a known Communist sympathizer as a governor. Soekarno replies back with an honest remark about he has no problem about pro-communist governors if their respective regions are known to be of majority communist sympathizers, like those happened in central and east Java. Hatta remarks that the Central Java can be safely hold under pro-communist governor, but the hardline muslims in east Java will rebel if they are led by an atheist governor.
-
After mulling for a day, consensus is achieved, all that meet together today agrees that five of the Soviet points are actually good suggestions, but the appeasements of Communists must be taken with care, and their loyalty must be ultimately held into Indonesia itself rather than some future idealistic classless world. Soekarno will inform at least Hatta and Sjahrir when he get his order to sent rice again. The ideas to sent rice toward Kalimantan and lesser Sunda islands is suspended due to the obvious Dutch control of the places.

1946, January 19 - Soekarno received a telegram that the Soviet weapon shipments will arrive in Semarang at January 24. The telegram also suggested fortifications around Semarang, and emplacement of the fledgling Indonesian navy to secure the waters from possible Allied interventions.

Van Mook start the preparations to move NICA administrations to Bandung, citing the flood around Jakarta as his reason (The Dutch-built canals are destroyed by invading Japanese forces). Raymond Westerling is in command of the Dutch Army in West Java.

1946, January 20 - Soekarno recall Soedirman to help with reinforcing Pati and Jepara. Some of the troops coming from Islamic backgrounds and Barisan Pelopor, however stayed at West Java as a detterent against both possible Mudjahiddin uprising, as well as not to tempt the Dutch into completely take West Java.

Sjahrir and Hatta jointly declares the formal lifting of the emergency period. Curfew is lifted from all Republican zones in Java except a small Mudjahiddin pocket left in Garut.

A massive series of explosions and commando attacks occured in the Soviet Occupation zones at Dresden. 153 Soviet troops, 23 American troops, 43 Soviet civilians, 5 American citizens, and 2 French citizens fall dead aside of further 72 deaths among the German civilians (mostly drafted for security purposes), and hundreds of the wounded victims. The chief perpetrator and leader of this attack is positively identified as Otto Skorzeny. There is no mentionable looting of weaponaries or other stuffs, but the destruction brought to the Soviet administration here is massive. Four unidentified German aircrafts are seen at the sky, destroying the soviet aircrafts on the ground before they can provide air support.

Later that day, the escaped Nazi leaders make a broadcast in Radio. Hermann Goring proclaim himself as the leader of Wulfen government of Nazi germany, he claimed full responsibility of the recent commando attacks directed to the occupiers, and announce the Wulfen Insurrection to oust the allied occupiers. The speech is directed to the rest of the German populations to take up arms and engage in hostile resistance against the Allies. Eisenhower and Alexander Gorbatov both announce that any armed resistance will be dealt harshly, and bounties are offered to those who has information regarding the escaped Nazi leaders.

1946, January 21 - Stalin sent massive reinforcements of Soviet troops, ordered Alexander Gorbatov to crush the Nazi insurrection as quickly as possible. While Truman ordered intensive air patrol to be held in all German lands and regions near their borders.

1946, January 23 - Hatta announced his formal resignation as co Prime Minister of Indonesia, he will soon go overseas leading the team of Indonesian observers at the United Nations. He gave a personal, private letter to Soekarno, who can be translated in english simply as "DON'T FUCK THINGS UP!"

Douwes Dekker returned to Jakarta, and will later move to Bandung to report to Van Mook.

1946, January 24 - Soviet shipments of weapons arrived in Semarang without any accidents, all 8 of the 88mm Flak Cannons are installed in Semarang to provide security against possible Allied/Dutch aggression. The eleven aircrafts are sent to Maguwo airport in Jogjakarta, along with most of the 2cm Flak 30 cannons. The rest of heavy equipments, along with the small arms, are distributed to Republican troops at central and east Java. They primarily secured by Laskar Rakjat under Musso.

A bomb explode in Berlin, causing the death of 7 Allied officials. Tensions between the Allied Occupation forces and German people runs high out of the Soviet troops' heavy handed interrogation as well as summary executions of several suspected Nazi sympathizers being leaked to the public. Eisenhower formally asked Truman to provide more troops for uprooting and ending the Nazi threat.

1946, January 25 - Soekarno formally appoint Tan Malaka as Governor of Central Sumatera*[1]. Soekarno formally appoint Teuku Nyak Arief as Governor of Aceh.

1946, January 26 - Soekarno formally appoint King of Buleleng, Anak Agung Panji Tisna*[2] as Governor of Lesser Sunda Islands.

Admiral Joelianto Soelaiman (formerly Yaichiro Shibata) are tasked to built a forward base toward Eastern part of Indonesia, located in North Bali.

1946, January 27 - Soekarno formally appoint Musso as Governor of North Java*[3a]. Soekarno formally appoint Duke Mangkunegara VIII as Governor of Surakarta*[3b].

Soetomo is promoted directly into Admiral, and stationed in the reinforced Tandjung Mas port of Semarang, along with his flagship KRI Buaja Murka (formerly HNLMS Jacob van Heemskerck).

Minor enggagement between Allied forces against Pro-Republic forces occurs in Makkasar.

1946, January 28 - Soekarno formally appoint Arie Frederik Lasut as Governor of North Sulawesi*[4a]. Soekarno formally appoint Sultan Muhammad Abdul Kadir Aidudin of Makkasar as governor of Sulawesi.*[4b]

1946, January 29 - Gen Spoor takes command of Dutch forces in the Indies.

Some disgruntled anti-feudal Republicans along with Communists hold a meeting in Semarang over the appointments of several Kings as lifetime governor.

In Germany, the Soviet occupation troops round out and kill 500 suspected Nazi Sympathizers in East Berlin. The other Allied authorities tolerate them because of the unrest and possible uprising of the Wulfen Nazis.

1946, January 30 - US, British, and Dutch government agreed to fully support the Dutch administration of East Indies over the suspected Soviet support for the Independent Republic of Indonesia.

Hatta arrived in London, to start the direct Indonesian diplomatic efforts.

1946, January 31 - End of January. Admiral Joelianto Soelaiman involved in accidental engagement against Allied Australian Navy Force trying to arrest the Japanese crews of the fleet, including him. 22 Indonesian troops, majority of them Japanese deserters, and 9 Australians dead. Engagement only ended after Admiral Patterson ordered the Australians to cease their fire. Soekarno and Sjahrir immediately file a protest over the supposed violation of the truce.

Soviet Manchurian army are involved in major armed contact with the KMT backed by US troops. 52 US troops dead, along with 74 Soviet troops, MacArthur are enraged, but Beria quickly informing him about the accidental nature of the hostile contact.

*1) It is speculated that Tan Malaka is both a communist and a Muslim. It is assumed ITTL that he will try to show his Islamic side to the populance, plus he's actually born from the heavily muslim region of Minang (despite his later communist leaning), giving him an advantage to govern his own birth region. His appointment mostly done to appease the Communists, of course.
*2) Due to the initial lesser hostility between Allied/Dutch forces and The Republic, Bali and West Nusa Tenggara are at least stable enough to warrant non military governor. Due to no "social war" occurred over suspected local aristocracy collaboration with the Dutch, appointing the most influential King in Bali region should be the most logical choice of Governor.
*3) Due to no OTL forced removal of Mangkunegara VIII by Soedirman, as well as his ITTL explicit support toward the Republican cause, the region of Central Java is split into two provinces. The pro-communist, heavily industrialized regions of the North under Musso, and the traditional areas of Surakarta stayed under the formalized Mangkunegaran rule. The formerly central Java region of Magelang and Purworejo are given to Jogjakarta.
*4) Because of less initial hostility with the Dutch, the Residentie Manado of the Dutch Administration is not initially united into greater Sulawesi province. Due to, again, no "social war", the most influential Sultan is appointed as governor.

we still use old spelling back then
so Hamengkubuwono should be hamengkoeboewono

Ah, yes, I know... it's quite hard to think about new spelling and old spelling consistently when writing, especially when I am practically born far after the EYD (New Spelling) was used. To those without knowledge in Dutch language, the old spelling seems weird and counter intuitive (J instead of Y, OE instead of U, TJ instead of C, DJ instead of J, CH instead of KH, the swapping of di- ke- and 'pada' for place nominal, as well as a ton of irregular change in words)

I am sorry but as far as I can predict myself, using old spelling consistently is a great challenge, ESPECIALLY the Indonesian history source I've read is written all in the new spelling. Expect a mix of them, that's all that I can guarantee... :( considering almost everyone born after 1972 without background in extensive linguistics cannot really know about the old spelling system. Some might dare to say it's simply a swapping of alphabets, but well, with almost opposite spellings than today's Indonesians...

Uh well... so in this very particular section, I will try my best to rename the new spelling name into old ones, but I cannot give a full guarantee, especially concerning the name of cities and regions (so those without knowledge in Indonesian language could google it / read it in wikipedia about their places. Everyone may know about Djakarta and Djogjakarta already, but Tjimahe, Tjireboon, Reeio, Koedoes, etc, will simply mistaken as other words by google.

I miss living in Indonesia a bit I must admit, and this will nicely complement my autodidactic studies of Indonesian history. Definitely subscribed.

Ah, nice, thank you.

Ah yes, but with full promise of armament given in exchange of rice, it will be a mighty tempting offer especially in the Independence war period (up to 1950s), Soekarno knows well that armed insurrections will erupt regularly in some areas.

IOTL, he tolerate the Islamic ones after they helped him fighting the Allies, and only reconcile with the Communists after 1955... ITTL, in a very Ironic way, without heavy Dutch and Allied advance in 1945 to early 1946, coupled with Stalin's help, he started on the quite opposite side. And uh, with him accepting the Soviet offer, expect USA to be actually reluctant in pressing the Dutch and British to negotiate in later times.

You may also noticed, this very action, also in rather ironic, but quite logical way out of worse Allied performance in the earlier stage of the war, it will rather secured the traditionalists' claim of authorities. They are not sanctioned by the Dutch administration as head of those "negara" states, so the Republican forces will be actually reluctant to oust them from power, no "Social War" happened. Yeah, Indonesia will end up as Monarchist ITTL, I know it is a bias on this TL so...
