Little Changes

Well, surely they will have had some interaction, and the in this timeline discredited mayor may still want to make headlines, or may seek to indicate that the ATL Member of Congress did something unethical to convey the idea that he (Daley) just did the same sort of thing as everyone else.

Daley was Mayor of Chicago while Obama was a state senator. Then, Obama was in Washington as a Representative while Daley was in prison. Daley would get out in 2004. He'd want to go after Rush and Blagojevich rather than Obama. Barack would just have been the guy that took up Rush's seat. Rush was the one that unseated him, and Blagojevich put him away. Although... you have just given me a wonderful idea. :D

You're forgetting that Obama's career in Illinois results largely from his activism in Chicago. Very corrupt people (such as Daley in this TL) have a way of holding onto power ironically due to the corruption, actual or perceived, of others. Just look at J. Edgar Hoover's career, for example. Nothing short of having dirt on everyone who's ever set foot in Washington explains th longevity of his career at the Bureau.

True, but by the time Daley gets out of prison, Obama might be flying too high for him to shoot down. Especially given the comparative reputations the two might have by then.

Obama held assignments on the House Committees for Foreign Relations, Education and the Workforce, and Veteran’s Affairs through December of 2001. In January 2002, he received additional assignments on the House committees for Oversight and Government Reform, and Ways and Means. Obama would also briefly serve on the United States Committee on Homeland Security after it’s formation on June 19, 2002.

Ever since Dan Rostenkowski had heard Barack Obama’s keynote address at the 2000 Democratic National Convention, he was impressed. He hadn’t paid much attention to the freshman Obama when he won the special election in 1999, but the Keynote had changed everything. Rostenkowski became very impressed with Obama’s auditory skills, and saw a great deal of potential in the young man. Once Obama was sworn in for the second time to the House, he was going around getting to know everyone. Rostenkowski approached him and pulled him aside. The two had a brief conversation and then Obama left to meet other people. Rostenkowski phoned Obama three days later, and asked him to come to his office. It was there that he introduced Obama to his longtime friend, Senator Ted Kennedy. The three had a conversation that lasted for a little over four hours. During that time, they questioned him on a variety of issues including national security, foreign affairs, domestic affairs, and economics. Whatever was said at that meeting between the three, Rostenkowski was apparently very pleased with the results. Rostenkowski took Obama under his wing in the House and served as his mentor. He used his influence to place his fellow Representative from Chicago on a number of important committees that a regular freshman congressman could not have hoped to make without seniority. In return, Obama learned much from Rostenkowski and supported a number of bills that were both sponsored and supported by him. Rostenkowski and Obama would form a long-lasting friendship that would last until Rostenkowski’s retirement from congress in 2006. Obama was one of the pallbearers at his funeral in 2010. In his earlier years, Rostenkowski was a good friend of the Kennedys, and formed a lasting friendship with the family. He would be quoted in 2008 as saying that Obama reminded him of John Kennedy, and that he saw a bright future for the young man.

Please, being in prison won't be an obstaxle because Daley will have visitors.

Alright, since this is the type of scenario that got me wrong last time, I'm going to ask straight out. Would the Governor of Illinois just appoint someone to fill a Senator's slot, or would he call a special election?

I kind of need this question answered before I can continue. Does anybody know?

In Illinois, a vacancy in a US Senate is filled by gubernatorial appointment as per state law.

OOC: When Barack Obama resigned his Senate seat in 2008, Governor Blagojevich appointed Roland Burris to Obama's seat.

Like many of my other threads, I appear to have jumped into this one before I had fully fleshed it out. I need time to reorganize my ideas and write some more. So... this is discontinued for now. Will restart under a new title at an unspecified date. May also pick up another author to help me. I know of one that might want to help.
