Literature WI: Douglas Adams had lived

As we all know, Douglas Adams died of a heart attack in 2001.

What if he had lived?

How would it impact science fiction?

Not at all? He didn't really have that much impact on what anyone else did even when alive, did he? I mean, while he has some fanatic fans, and millions of people love his work, he seems to be pretty much a 'one-off' type. If anyone tried to imitate him, I don't think they succeeded....

So why would that change?

Edit: even Douglas Adams couldn't imitate Douglas Adams. 'The long dark teatime of the soul' kind of did a soggy plop. Hitchhiker's, in ALL its various incarnations was wonderful, but IMO he's a bit of a one-trick pony.

Couldn't agree more. The Sequels to the 1st Hitchhiker's already were way downhill.
Perhaps 2 PoDs might be interesting though:

1. He lives longer
AND
2. He is the the Terry Pratchett of SciFi rather than a "one-trick pony" have Hitchiker spawn a series of books that actually get better than the 1st one.

I seems to recall DA beeing a atheist along the same lines of Dawkins. At least, Dawkins made some references along those lines. Now, 2001 beeing the year of 9/11 and maybe the breaktrough of Dawkins. So if I haven't messed up something this far and he enyoy a better health, maybe he fill the same slot Dawkins did...
